Understanding High School Diplomas and Their Purpose

A high school diploma is a document that shows you have completed a standard high school education, typically after 12 years of schooling from kindergarten through 12th grade. This credential represents that you have met your state's educational requirements in subjects like English, mathematics, science, social studies, and physical education. The diploma itself is issued by your high school upon graduation, usually after you pass required courses and meet your school's specific graduation standards.

High school diplomas vary slightly from state to state because each state sets its own educational standards. Some states require students to pass standardized tests, while others focus more on course completion and grades. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 88% of Americans age 25 and older held a high school diploma or higher qualification in 2022. This high rate shows that a high school diploma remains a foundational credential in the American education system.

The diploma serves several important purposes in your life. Many employers require a high school diploma as a basic qualification for hiring, even for entry-level positions. Colleges and universities typically require a diploma for admission to traditional four-year programs. Vocational and trade schools often use the diploma as proof that you have basic academic skills. Additionally, some professional licenses and certifications require a diploma as a prerequisite before you can pursue further training.

Students who follow the traditional high school path attend classes in person at a public or private school from 9th grade through 12th grade. During this time, they earn credits by passing classes in required subject areas. Most high schools use a system where students need a certain number of credits to graduate—typically around 22 to 24 credits—though this number varies by school and state.

Practical Takeaway: Understand that a high school diploma represents completion of standard educational requirements set by your state. Before pursuing any alternative credential, research what your specific state requires and what employers or institutions you want to work with or attend actually need.

What Is the GED and How It Differs From a Diploma

The GED, which stands for General Educational Development, is an alternative credential for people who did not complete high school through traditional attendance. The GED test measures knowledge and skills that are typically taught in high school across four subject areas: reasoning through language arts, social studies, science, and mathematical reasoning. When you pass the GED exam, you receive a GED credential that is recognized by employers and educational institutions as equivalent to a high school diploma.

The key difference between a high school diploma and a GED credential comes down to how the credential is earned. A high school diploma is awarded after completing coursework and meeting requirements over a period of years within a school setting. A GED credential is earned by passing a single comprehensive exam that tests your knowledge of high school-level material. According to the GED Testing Service, in 2022, approximately 117,000 people in the United States passed the GED test.

The GED exam consists of four separate tests that you can typically take on separate dates. You are not required to pass all four tests on the same day. The reasoning through language arts test measures your ability to read, understand, and write about texts. The social studies test covers history, civics, economics, and geography. The science test includes questions about life science, earth science, and physical science. The mathematical reasoning test covers algebra, geometry, and quantitative reasoning. Each test is scored separately, and you need to achieve a passing score on each one to receive your overall GED credential.

Both credentials open similar doors for employment and education. Research from the American Council on Education shows that employers generally view the GED credential as equivalent to a high school diploma. However, some specific situations may require one credential over the other. For example, some military branches may have slight preferences for one credential, and some colleges may have different pathways for GED holders versus diploma holders, though both are typically accepted for admission.

Practical Takeaway: Recognize that a GED credential and a high school diploma are functionally equivalent for most purposes, but they represent different pathways. A diploma shows you completed high school coursework over time, while a GED shows you passed a comprehensive exam demonstrating high school-level knowledge.

Who Pursues GED and Common Reasons for Choosing This Path

People pursue a GED credential for many different reasons, and the path is not limited to any single age group or background. According to the GED Testing Service, approximately 35% of GED test-takers are under 20 years old, 35% are between 20 and 39 years old, and 30% are age 40 or older. This broad age range shows that people at various life stages find value in obtaining a GED credential.

One common reason people pursue a GED is because they did not finish high school during their traditional school years. This might happen for various reasons: some students face significant hardships like financial difficulties or family responsibilities that made attending school impossible. Others struggled with the traditional school environment due to learning differences, behavioral challenges, or mental health concerns. Still others moved frequently and had difficulty maintaining consistent enrollment. For these individuals, a GED offers a pathway to complete their secondary education credential later in life.

Working adults represent a substantial portion of GED test-takers. Many adults decide to obtain a GED to advance their careers or pursue better job opportunities. They may have been working in jobs that did not require a diploma when they were younger, but now find that employers require one for promotions or new positions. Some working adults pursue a GED to prepare for college enrollment or vocational training they want to pursue. Others pursue it simply to achieve a personal goal or to serve as a role model for their children or family members.

Parents who did not complete high school sometimes pursue a GED to demonstrate to their children the importance of education. Many GED programs serve parents and working adults in evening or weekend classes. Some people pursue a GED after leaving school to care for family members and then deciding to return to education when circumstances change. Immigration is another factor—some people who completed secondary education in their home countries but immigrated to the United States choose to pursue a GED to have a U.S.-recognized credential for employment or further education purposes.

Practical Takeaway: Recognize that pursuing a GED is a valid choice for many people at different life stages and with different circumstances. Understanding your own motivation for pursuing a GED—whether career advancement, college preparation, or personal fulfillment—can help you stay focused throughout the preparation and testing process.

Steps to Prepare For and Take the GED Exam

Preparing for the GED exam typically involves several stages. First, you should understand the structure of the test and what content it covers. The GED consists of four separate subject-area tests that you can take over time rather than all at once. Most people take between several weeks and several months to prepare, depending on their starting point and how much time they can dedicate to studying. Some people who have stronger foundational skills prepare in a few weeks, while others who need to review more material take several months.

Many communities offer GED preparation classes through local adult education programs, community colleges, and libraries. These classes are often taught by experienced instructors who understand the test format and content. Classes may be offered during the day, evening, or on weekends to accommodate working adults and people with other responsibilities. Some programs offer classes both in-person and online through video conferencing. Costs for GED classes vary widely—some are completely free through public libraries or school districts, while others may charge modest fees through community colleges.

You can also prepare for the GED through self-study using books, online resources, and practice tests. The official GED Testing Service website offers study materials and practice tests. Many libraries carry GED study books that you can use at no cost. Online platforms offer interactive lessons and practice questions for varying costs. The key to self-study is creating a structured plan that covers all four subject areas and dedicating consistent time to study. Many people find that combining self-study with at least some instruction—whether through classes, tutoring, or online courses—produces better results than self-study alone.

When you are ready to take the actual test, you must locate an official GED testing center. Testing centers are located throughout the country in schools, community colleges, libraries, and adult education programs. You typically need to register in advance for a test date and time. The testing fee varies by state but generally ranges from $30 to $40 per subject test. Some people pay to take all four tests and others space out their testing over several weeks or months. Once you pass a test in one subject, that passing score typically remains valid, so you only need to retake tests in
