Free Guide to Getting Your Previous Tax Returns

Understanding Why You Might Need Previous Tax Returns

Previous tax returns are documents you filed with the IRS in past years. These returns show your income, deductions, and tax liability for specific tax years. Many situations in life require you to provide copies of old tax returns, even years after you filed them. Understanding when and why you need these documents helps you prepare for common requests from banks, employers, landlords, and government agencies.

Financial institutions frequently ask for previous tax returns when you apply for loans, mortgages, or credit cards. Lenders use your return information to verify your income and assess your ability to repay borrowed money. A mortgage lender, for example, typically requests the last two years of returns to confirm steady employment and income patterns. Similarly, if you're starting a business and need a small business loan, banks will examine your personal returns to understand your financial history.

Landlords and property management companies commonly request previous tax returns as part of rental application screening. They want to verify that you earn sufficient income to pay rent reliably. Some landlords ask for the last year's return; others may request two or three years of documentation. This practice helps them assess tenant reliability before signing a lease.

Government agencies beyond the IRS may request your returns for various purposes. If you're receiving unemployment benefits, food assistance, or housing support, the agency administering the program might request returns to verify your income level. Additionally, if you're involved in legal proceedings such as divorce, child support cases, or custody disputes, the court may require you to submit previous returns as evidence of your financial situation.

Practical Takeaway: Keep copies of your filed returns for at least seven years. This timeframe covers most common requests and provides protection in case the IRS needs to contact you about past tax years.

How to Obtain Tax Returns Directly from the IRS

The IRS provides several methods to obtain copies of returns you previously filed. The most straightforward approach is requesting a transcript or a copy of your actual return. These are two different documents with distinct purposes. A transcript is a condensed version of your return that shows key information like income, adjusted gross income, and tax liability. A copy of your return is the actual document you filed, including all schedules and attachments you submitted.

You can request transcripts or return copies online through the IRS website at irs.gov. This method is available if you have a Social Security number, adjusted gross income (AGI) from your most recent return, and a filing status to verify your identity. The online process is straightforward: visit the IRS's "Get Transcript" tool, select the year you need, and follow the prompts. The system typically generates transcripts immediately for online viewing or mailing within five to ten business days.

Phone requests are another option for obtaining transcripts. You can call the IRS at 1-800-908-9946 and speak with a representative who will verify your identity through security questions. During the call, provide the specific tax year you need and your preferred method of receiving the document—by mail or electronically. The IRS generally mails transcript requests within ten business days.

For a complete copy of your filed return with all schedules and attachments, you must request Form 4506 or Form 4506-C. Form 4506 requests an actual copy of your return; Form 4506-C requests a transcript. These forms require your signature and can be submitted by mail to your local IRS office. Processing typically takes four to eight weeks. You can find the correct mailing address for your location on the IRS website.

If you need returns from more than ten years ago, the IRS may be unable to provide copies as they typically retain records for seven to ten years. In these situations, you may need to contact a tax professional or CPA who might have retained copies, or you could reconstruct the return using documentation from that period.

Practical Takeaway: Start with the IRS's online transcript tool if possible—it's the fastest option and costs nothing. Request transcripts at least two weeks before you need them to account for processing time.

Using Your Tax Software Account to Access Stored Returns

If you filed your taxes using software platforms like TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxAct, or similar services, your filing account may retain copies of previous returns. These platforms store your return information in your user account, allowing you to view and redownload submitted returns for several years. This option is often the quickest way to obtain a return if you have access to your account login information.

To retrieve returns from your tax software account, log in using your username and password. Most platforms display a list of previously filed returns organized by tax year. You can typically view the return directly on screen, download it as a PDF file, or print it. The exact steps vary by software provider, so check the platform's help section if you're unsure how to navigate to your previous returns.

This method works well if you remember which tax software you used and still have access to that account. However, there are some limitations to consider. Tax software companies may only store returns for a limited number of years—typically between five and seven years. Some platforms charge fees if you access very old returns or download multiple returns. Additionally, if you filed your taxes through a CPA or tax preparation service rather than software, your return information may not be stored in a tax software account.

If you've changed your email address or forgotten your login credentials, most tax software platforms allow you to reset your password through an email recovery process. This usually takes just a few minutes. If you've changed your email address and no longer have access to the original email account, contact the software provider's customer service for alternative identity verification methods.

Tax software accounts remain accessible even after the tax filing season ends, so you can retrieve returns at any time of year. Some people find this method more convenient than requesting transcripts from the IRS because the process is immediate and doesn't involve government processing times.

Practical Takeaway: Check your tax software account first before requesting documents from the IRS. Screenshot or download your returns and save them to secure cloud storage or external drives as backups in case your account becomes inaccessible.

Requesting Returns from Your Tax Preparer or CPA

If a CPA, enrolled agent, or tax preparation company prepared your returns, they typically maintain copies of the returns they filed on your behalf. Tax professionals are required to keep client records for a minimum of three years, though many retain files longer. Contacting your tax preparer is often the fastest way to obtain copies, particularly if you filed through them multiple years in a row.

To request a copy from your tax preparer, contact their office directly by phone or email. Provide the specific tax years you need and explain why you need the returns. Most tax preparers can email you a PDF copy within one to three business days. Some may charge a small fee for providing copies of very old returns or if your account was closed years ago, though many don't charge if you were a regular client.

When contacting your tax preparer, have the following information ready: your full name, Social Security number, and the specific tax years you're requesting. If you worked with a large tax preparation company like H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt, you can contact their customer service line to request copies. Provide your account or client identification number if you have it.

If your tax preparer has gone out of business or retired, retrieving your returns becomes more complicated. In some cases, client files may have been transferred to another tax professional or firm. Try contacting the local tax preparation association or chamber of commerce in your area—they may be able to track down who has your records. Alternatively, you can request transcripts directly from the IRS, which will show the key information from your returns even if you don't have the original documents.

Building a relationship with a consistent tax professional offers benefits beyond just having access to your records. A CPA or tax preparer who has prepared your returns for multiple years has detailed knowledge of your tax situation and can answer questions about past returns. They understand which deductions you've claimed, which schedules you used, and how your tax situation has changed over time.

Practical Takeaway: Ask your tax preparer to email you a copy of your return each year after filing. Create a personal folder to store these PDFs. This simple habit ensures you always have immediate access without depending on retrieving old records later.
