What's Inside IKEA's Kitchen Design Guide

IKEA publishes a free kitchen design guide that contains information about planning a kitchen renovation or new kitchen setup. This guide walks through the basic steps of thinking about your kitchen space, understanding different layout options, and learning about IKEA's kitchen product lines. The guide is available through IKEA's website and covers foundational topics that homeowners and renters often consider when reimagining their kitchen.

The guide includes sections on measuring your space accurately, understanding different cabinet styles and finishes, learning about countertop materials, and exploring sink and appliance options. It also touches on lighting considerations and how to think about workflow—the path you naturally take when moving between your stove, sink, and refrigerator. The information presented is designed for people with varying levels of kitchen design knowledge, from those tackling their first renovation to those making updates to an existing space.

IKEA updates this guide periodically to reflect current product offerings and design trends. The guide uses photographs and diagrams to illustrate concepts, making it easier to understand layout types and product features without needing specialized design vocabulary. You'll find information about IKEA's planning tools, how their modular cabinet system works, and ways to think about your kitchen's functionality and style together.

Practical takeaway: Before you begin any kitchen planning, gather this guide and spend time reviewing the measurement and layout sections. This foundational knowledge prevents costly mistakes later and helps you understand what information you'll need to collect about your current space.

How to Locate and Obtain the Guide

The IKEA kitchen design guide can be found through several channels. The primary way to obtain it is by visiting IKEA's official website and navigating to their kitchen planning section. From there, you can view the guide online or request a physical copy. Many IKEA stores also have printed copies available in their kitchen showroom areas, and staff can direct you to the specific location within the store.

To locate the guide online, go to IKEA's main website, then look for sections labeled "Kitchen" or "Planning Guides." You may also find it under "Inspiration" or "How-to" sections. The online version allows you to read through it at your own pace and return to specific sections as needed. Some people prefer printing sections of interest to reference while measuring their kitchens or shopping.

If you prefer a physical copy, visiting a local IKEA store is often the quickest option. Kitchen specialists in the showroom can provide you with a printed guide and may answer basic questions about where to find specific information within it. You can also call your local IKEA store to confirm they have copies in stock before making a trip.

The guide is offered at no cost—IKEA provides it as an informational resource. There are no registration fees, membership charges, or hidden costs associated with obtaining it. Whether you choose the digital or printed version, the information contained within is the same.

Practical takeaway: Decide whether you prefer reading on screen or on paper, then obtain your copy through whichever method suits your needs. Having the guide in hand before you start measuring ensures you'll capture all the information IKEA's planning process requires.

Understanding Kitchen Layout Styles Explained in the Guide

One of the most important sections in the IKEA kitchen design guide covers the five basic kitchen layout types. Understanding these layouts helps you think about how your kitchen could function. The guide explains the galley kitchen (two parallel lines of cabinets), the L-shaped kitchen (cabinets along two perpendicular walls), the U-shaped kitchen (cabinets along three walls), the island kitchen (which adds a central work surface), and the single-wall kitchen (all cabinets along one wall).

For each layout type, the guide provides information about the advantages and challenges. For example, a galley kitchen works well in smaller spaces and creates an efficient workflow, but two people can't easily work side by side. An L-shaped kitchen provides corner work space and flexibility, while U-shaped kitchens maximize storage and work surface but require more square footage. The island layout offers additional counter space and a gathering spot but needs adequate room for traffic flow around it.

The guide includes measurements and spacing recommendations for each layout. This information matters because proper spacing affects how comfortable and functional your kitchen feels during daily use. For instance, the guide may recommend that the distance between your sink and stove should be a certain number of inches, and that cabinet depths follow standard measurements to prevent awkward reaches or wasted space.

The guide also explains the "kitchen triangle" concept—the imaginary triangle formed by your refrigerator, stove, and sink. While modern kitchen design has evolved beyond strict adherence to this idea, understanding it helps you think about whether your key work stations are positioned logically relative to each other.

Practical takeaway: As you read about layout types, sketch your current kitchen space on paper and identify which layout most closely matches what you have. Then consider whether the guide's information about that layout's advantages and challenges matches your own experience using your kitchen.

Measuring and Planning Your Space Accurately

The IKEA kitchen design guide provides detailed instructions on measuring your kitchen accurately. Precise measurements are necessary for any kitchen planning work, whether you're designing in IKEA's planning tool or sharing information with a designer. The guide walks through measuring wall lengths, noting the height of existing cabinets or ceilings, identifying obstacles like windows or doorways, and marking where plumbing or electrical outlets currently exist.

Good measurement practices include taking measurements from multiple points on each wall (since walls aren't always perfectly straight), noting ceiling height variations, and identifying areas where pipes, vents, or electrical boxes protrude from walls. The guide explains why these details matter: a pipe running behind where a cabinet would go affects what can be installed there, and a window location determines how you can arrange upper cabinets.

The guide typically includes a template or grid paper you can use to create a basic floor plan. This simple drawing doesn't need to be perfect—it just needs to be accurate enough to help you and anyone assisting in the planning process understand your space's dimensions and existing features. Many people photograph their kitchen as well, which helps when reviewing the space later or discussing it with IKEA staff.

The guide also explains how to note the current location of appliances, whether you plan to keep them in the same spots or relocate them. It covers measuring doorway widths (important because large appliances or cabinet sections must fit through), identifying traffic paths (how people move through the kitchen), and noting which walls are external versus internal (external walls are thicker and may have insulation).

Practical takeaway: Set aside an hour to measure your kitchen using the guide's instructions. Write down all measurements twice to catch errors. Take photos of walls, appliances, and problem areas. You'll then have everything needed to explore design options using IKEA's tools or to discuss your space with a kitchen specialist.

Cabinet Styles, Finishes, and Organization Options

A significant portion of the IKEA kitchen design guide focuses on cabinet styles and finishes available through IKEA's product lines. The guide shows photographs and descriptions of different cabinet door styles—from simple and modern flat-front designs to raised-panel doors with more traditional appearances. Understanding the visual differences helps you think about what style appeals to you and how it might coordinate with your home's overall design.

The guide covers cabinet finish options, which might include paint colors like white, black, or gray, as well as wood-look finishes such as oak, walnut, or birch. Each finish has different visual characteristics and maintenance considerations. For instance, lighter finishes can make small kitchens feel more spacious, while darker finishes may hide fingerprints or dust more effectively. The guide provides this kind of practical information alongside product images.

Storage and organization options receive detailed attention in the guide. IKEA's modular cabinet system uses various interior components—pull-out drawers, shelves at different heights, door-mounted organizers, and specialty inserts for storing specific items. The guide explains how these components work together and shows examples of organized cabinets. It covers ideas for organizing pots and pans, storing food items, arranging dishes, and keeping cooking tools accessible.

The guide discusses how different cabinet configurations serve different needs. A kitchen where someone cooks frequently might prioritize easy access to frequently used items and substantial counter space. A kitchen used primarily for reheating and simple preparation might emphasize storage for takeout containers and minimal equipment.
