How to Send Texts to Multiple People Separately

Understanding Text Messaging Basics and Platform Options

Text messaging, or SMS (Short Message Service), allows you to send written messages to mobile phone numbers. When you want to reach multiple people with the same message, you have several options depending on what device you're using and what service provider you have. Most smartphones—whether iOS or Android—come with built-in messaging applications that let you compose and send texts. Your wireless carrier (such as Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, or regional carriers) handles the delivery of these messages through their network.

The key distinction when sending texts to multiple people is whether you want them to know they're part of a group message or whether you want to send individual messages that appear personal to each recipient. Group messages create a conversation thread where everyone can see all participants and all replies. Individual messages, by contrast, appear as one-to-one conversations between you and each person. Each method has different technical approaches and different outcomes for how the recipients experience your message.

Beyond the standard text messaging apps on your phone, there are third-party applications available through app stores that offer additional features for mass messaging. These range from free options to paid services and typically work by connecting to your phone's contact list. Some services let you schedule messages for later delivery, see read receipts, or add personalization elements like inserting someone's first name into a template message.

Understanding your options helps you choose the right method for your specific situation. Are you coordinating a group event where conversation matters? A group message works well. Do you need to send the same announcement to many people who shouldn't necessarily know who else received it? Individual messages may be more appropriate. Your choice depends on the context and your goals.

Practical Takeaway: Identify whether you need group messaging (where everyone sees everyone) or individual messages (where each person receives a separate text), as this determines which method you'll use.

Sending Group Text Messages on iPhone and Android

Group messaging is built into both iPhone and Android phones through their default messaging applications. On an iPhone using the Messages app, you start by tapping the compose button (a pencil and paper icon) to create a new message. Then you add multiple recipients by typing names or phone numbers in the "To:" field. As you type, your phone's contact list will suggest matching names. You can add as many recipients as you want—most carriers support 20 to 100 people in a single group message, though some carriers may have different limits. Once you've added all recipients and written your message content, you tap "Send."

On Android devices using the default messaging app (like Google Messages or your carrier's app), the process is similar. Open your messaging application and create a new message. Add multiple recipients by entering phone numbers or selecting contacts from your address book. Type your message and send it. All recipients will receive the message and can see that it's a group message with other participants listed.

An important consideration with group messages is the technology behind delivery. iMessages (sent between Apple devices over internet connection) work differently than SMS text messages (sent through cellular networks). If all participants have iPhones and iMessage is enabled, the group message will use Apple's iMessage service. If some participants have Android phones or don't have iMessage active, the message will send as regular SMS, which may incur charges if you have limited texting in your plan (though most modern plans include unlimited texting).

Group messages create a threaded conversation. When anyone in the group replies, all members see that response. This creates an ongoing conversation that everyone can follow. This feature works well for coordinating logistics, making decisions as a group, or sharing information with multiple people who need to be in the loop.

Practical Takeaway: To send a group text on your phone, open your messaging app, add multiple contacts in the recipient field, type your message, and send—all recipients will see each other's responses in a shared conversation thread.

Sending Individual Messages to Multiple People Separately

Sending individual messages to multiple people means each person receives what appears to be a personal text message from you, rather than a group message. Even if the message content is identical, each recipient sees only their own conversation with you. This approach is useful when you want to maintain privacy among recipients, send personalized greetings, or ensure that recipients don't feel like they're part of a broadcast list.

The manual method involves opening your messaging app, creating a new message, entering one recipient's phone number or contact name, typing your message, and hitting send. Then you repeat this process for each additional person. While straightforward, this becomes time-consuming if you need to reach 10, 20, or more people. Most people use this method for texting a handful of individuals rather than larger groups.

To make this process faster on an iPhone, you can use the Shortcuts app (pre-installed on modern iPhones) or third-party automation apps that let you create custom workflows. With Shortcuts, you can create an automated workflow that sends the same message to multiple numbers sequentially. You set up your list of recipients and the message text once, then run the shortcut to send individual messages to everyone on your list. This eliminates repetitive manual steps.

Android users have similar options through automation apps like IFTTT (If This Then That), Tasker, or texting-specific applications available through the Google Play Store. Some of these apps offer scheduling features, so you can set messages to send at specific times rather than all at once. Others let you insert variable text—for example, adding each person's first name to a template message so it reads "Hi Sarah, [your message]" to Sarah and "Hi Marcus, [your message]" to Marcus.

When using third-party apps for sending individual messages, understand how they access your contacts and what permissions they need. Most legitimate apps require permission to read your contacts and send SMS messages. Always download from official app stores (Apple App Store or Google Play Store) rather than third-party sources, and read reviews to verify the app's reliability.

Practical Takeaway: To send individual texts separately, use your phone's built-in automation tools (Shortcuts on iPhone, Tasker on Android) or download an app designed for bulk messaging to send the same message to multiple people without them seeing each other's information.

Using Web-Based and Cloud Services for Mass Texting

Beyond your phone's built-in capabilities, various web-based platforms and services allow you to send text messages to multiple people from a computer or online dashboard. These services typically require you to log in through a website or app, upload or input your recipient list, compose your message, and schedule or send it. Examples include platforms like Twilio, EZ Texting, SlickText, and SimpleTexting. Some services operate on a free tier with limited messages per month, while others charge per message or per month based on usage.

These platforms work by using dedicated phone numbers or shared short codes to send messages on your behalf. When recipients receive the message, it comes from that platform's number rather than directly from your personal phone number. This approach is common for business notifications, appointment reminders, event notifications, and marketing communications. The advantage is that you can send to many people simultaneously, track delivery status, see which messages were delivered or failed, and often schedule messages for future dates and times.

To use a web-based service, you typically create an account by providing an email address and setting a password. You then upload your recipient list (usually as a spreadsheet or CSV file containing phone numbers). You compose your message, review it, and choose to send it right away or schedule it for later. The platform delivers your message to each recipient individually, so from the recipient's perspective, it appears as a separate text from that service's number.

Important considerations when using third-party services include: first, verify that the service is legitimate and established, as new and untested services may have reliability or security issues. Second, understand the pricing model—some charge per message, some charge monthly, and some have free tiers with message limits. Third, check the service's privacy policy to understand how it handles your contact list and message content. Fourth, be aware that messages sent through these platforms cannot be anonymous; there will be a phone number associated with them, and the service may include its branding in the message or related communications.

Businesses and organizations commonly use these services for employee notifications, customer alerts, appointment confirmations, and event updates. Nonprofits use them for fundraising campaigns and volunteer coordination. The key advantage is handling larger volumes of messages than you'd reasonably send manually and getting detailed reporting on delivery.
