A Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is available to those with a financial need and enrolled in certain educational programs. To apply for college grants online, you use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.
You must be enrolled in a school and program that are part of the TEACH Grant. The TEACH Grant is unique, as it comes with counseling to explain the conditions of your grant.
The TEACH Grant comes with service obligations. You must agree to teach in a high-need field full-time that serves low-income students for at least four years. You must fulfill your mandatory four-year obligation within eight years of graduating.
A high-need field includes bilingual education, mathematics, reading, science, special education, and foreign languages.
However, the government can recognize other fields due to the teacher shortage.
If you fail to keep your end of the bargain, your TEACH Grant funds will convert into an unsubsidized loan. You will need to repay these funds and any interest charges that have accumulated.
Almost all government grant programs require you to meet the basic requirements. All free college grants for adults require the following:
- Having a financial need
- Being a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen
- Having a Social Security Number
- Registering for Selective Service, if you are a male between 18 and 25 years old
- Being enrolled at least part-time in an eligible program
- Maintain a satisfactory academic standing If you drop out of your program or fail to maintain your grades in the 75th percentile, your TEACH Grant will become a loan you must pay.
