How to Get Up to $6,495 / Year With Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants

  • You are ineligible for a Federal Pell Grant due to your Expected Family Contribution, but
  • You meet the other Federal Pell Grant eligibility requirements, and
  • Your parent or guardian was a member of the U.S. armed forces and died as a result of military service performed in Iraq or Afghanistan after the events of 9/11, and
  • You were younger than 24 years of age or enrolled in college at least part-time at the time of your parent’s or guardian’s death.

You can apply for school grants online through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

You will need to complete the application each year you wish to receive the grant.

You will no longer be eligible for funds from Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants once you obtain your first professional degree. However, you cannot collect from the program for more than 12 semesters. After 12 semesters, you will lose your eligibility for these grants.

Certain programs promote enrollment by making them more affordable.

If you want to go into education, several teacher-specific grants are available to reduce your financial burden.
