What You Need to Rent a Car from Enterprise

Requirements You'll Need to Present at the Rental Counter

When you arrive at an Enterprise location to rent a car, you must bring several documents and pieces of information. The primary requirement is a valid driver's license. Enterprise accepts licenses from all U.S. states, as well as international driving permits for visitors from other countries. Your driver's license must not be suspended or revoked, and it should be current (not expired). If your license has been renewed recently, bring both your old and new licenses if you have them, as this can help with the verification process.

You'll also need to provide a credit card in your name at the time of rental. Enterprise accepts all major credit cards including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. The credit card serves two purposes: it's used to process the rental payment, and it may be used to place a hold for the security deposit. The amount held is typically released when you return the vehicle in good condition. Debit cards are not accepted as the primary payment method, though some Enterprise locations may accept them in specific situations—it's worth calling ahead to confirm if you plan to use a debit card.

Proof of insurance is an important document to bring, though it's not always required. If you have your own auto insurance policy, bringing your insurance card or policy documentation can help reduce the cost of your rental. Your personal auto insurance policy may cover rental cars, which means you might not need to purchase Enterprise's additional insurance options. However, you'll want to contact your insurance company before renting to confirm what coverage extends to rental vehicles.

Proof of residency or address verification may be requested, particularly if you're renting in a state where you don't have a driver's license. A utility bill, lease agreement, or recent bank statement can serve this purpose. Some Enterprise locations are stricter about this requirement than others, so calling your local branch beforehand can save you time at the counter.

Practical takeaway: Create a checklist before visiting Enterprise: valid driver's license, credit card in your name, proof of insurance (if available), and a backup form of ID. Bring these items even if you've rented before, as requirements can vary by location.

Age Requirements and Special Circumstances

Enterprise's standard age requirement for renting a car is 21 years old. This applies to most vehicle classes and locations across the United States. However, if you're between 21 and 24 years old, you may encounter an additional young renter fee, which typically ranges from $15 to $25 per day depending on the location and vehicle type. This fee compensates for the increased insurance risk associated with younger drivers, as statistical data shows that drivers aged 20-24 have higher accident rates than older drivers.

Some Enterprise locations allow renters as young as 18 or 20, but these situations come with conditions. If you're under 21, you may be limited to certain vehicle types, usually compact or mid-size cars rather than full-size SUVs or luxury vehicles. You'll also need to provide additional documentation, which might include a co-signer who is at least 25 years old and has a valid driver's license and credit card. The co-signer doesn't need to be present at rental, but their information will be added to the rental agreement.

Drivers aged 75 and older may face different requirements at some Enterprise locations. While there's no strict upper age limit for renting, older drivers might be asked to provide a medical certification or their doctor's approval of their driving ability. This is not a universal policy across all Enterprise locations, but it's becoming more common. If you're in this age group, it's best to call your local Enterprise branch to understand what documentation they may request.

International visitors can rent from Enterprise with a valid passport, international driving permit (IDP), and a credit card. The IDP serves as a translation of your foreign driver's license and must be obtained in your home country before traveling. Keep in mind that international visitors may face higher insurance requirements and may need to provide an International Driving Permit even if their home country's license is in English.

Military personnel, students, and members of certain organizations may receive discounts on rentals, though this doesn't change the basic age and documentation requirements. Enterprise offers discounts for AAA members, AARP members, and corporate clients, but you'll still need to meet all standard rental requirements.

Practical takeaway: If you're under 25, expect additional fees or restrictions. If you're planning to rent and fall outside the typical age range (21-75), contact your local Enterprise location in advance to understand their specific policies and any additional paperwork you'll need.

Insurance Options and What They Cover

Enterprise offers several insurance and protection options at the rental counter, and understanding each one helps you make informed decisions about coverage. The primary options include Damage Waiver (also called Loss Damage Waiver or LDW), Personal Effects Coverage, Personal Accident Insurance, and Roadside Assistance.

Damage Waiver is the most common insurance product offered. This coverage typically costs between $15 and $35 per day, depending on the vehicle type and location. When you purchase Damage Waiver, Enterprise agrees not to charge you for damage to the rental car, with some exceptions. The coverage usually doesn't apply to damage from off-road driving, intentional damage, or damage caused by using the vehicle for purposes other than personal transportation. Damage Waiver has a deductible, meaning you may still be responsible for a portion of damage costs—typically between $500 and $1,500. Before purchasing, check whether your personal auto insurance or credit card already covers rental car damage, as this could make Enterprise's Damage Waiver redundant.

Personal Effects Coverage protects personal belongings left in the rental car, covering items up to a maximum amount (usually $300-$500) if they're stolen or damaged. This coverage typically costs $3-$8 per day. However, this insurance usually doesn't cover valuables like jewelry, electronics, or cash, and it requires you to file a police report if theft occurs.

Personal Accident Insurance provides medical coverage for you and your passengers in case of an accident, covering medical expenses, dental work, and in some cases, funeral expenses. This typically costs $5-$12 per day. Before purchasing, review whether your health insurance or auto insurance already covers rental car accidents, as there may be overlap.

Roadside Assistance is a separate protection plan costing roughly $5-$10 per day. It covers services like towing, lockout assistance, fuel delivery, and tire changes. If you're a member of AAA or have roadside assistance through your auto insurance, you may not need this additional coverage.

Many credit cards, particularly premium travel cards, include rental car coverage as a cardholder benefit. Visa Signature and Mastercard World Elite cards often include some level of damage coverage. Before arriving at Enterprise, contact your credit card issuer to learn what rental car protection is included with your card. Similarly, most auto insurance policies extend to rental cars, though you should confirm this with your insurance agent before renting.

Practical takeaway: Before visiting Enterprise, review your existing auto insurance policy and credit card benefits to understand what rental car coverage you already have. This research can save you $20-$50 per day by avoiding duplicate coverage.

Payment Methods and Financial Information

Enterprise requires a credit card in your name to complete a rental transaction. The rental agreement will show the estimated daily rate, which is multiplied by the number of rental days to calculate the total. In addition to the daily rate, you'll see taxes, which vary by state and location. Some areas also charge surcharges or facility fees, typically ranging from $2 to $5 per day. The total amount shown at the counter includes these additions, so the final bill may be 20-30% higher than the advertised daily rate once taxes are included.

At the time of rental, Enterprise will place a hold on your credit card for the estimated rental cost plus a security deposit. The security deposit is typically equal to one day's rental rate or a flat amount (often $200-$500), and it's held to cover potential damage or traffic violations that occur during the rental period. This hold is released within a few business days after you return the vehicle in good condition. It's important to understand that this hold reduces your available credit during the rental period, so if your credit limit is tight, this could temporarily affect your ability to make other purchases.

The rental rate you're quoted may not be the final amount you pay. If you purchased additional insurance, added extra
