Learn About Managing Bleeding Hemorrhoids at Home

Understanding Hemorrhoids: What They Are and Why They Happen

Hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in or around the anus and rectum. They're one of the most common conditions affecting the digestive system, with studies showing that about 75% of people experience hemorrhoid symptoms at some point in their lives. Despite how common they are, many people feel embarrassed discussing them, which sometimes delays treatment.

There are two types of hemorrhoids: internal and external. Internal hemorrhoids develop inside the rectum, where you cannot see or feel them under normal circumstances. They typically don't cause pain because the tissue lining the rectum has fewer pain-sensing nerves. However, internal hemorrhoids can bleed, and you might notice bright red blood on toilet paper or in the bowl. External hemorrhoids form under the skin around the anus and can be quite uncomfortable because the skin in this area is sensitive and has many pain-sensing nerves.

Several factors contribute to hemorrhoid development. Straining during bowel movements is one of the leading causes. This can happen when you're constipated or spend too long on the toilet. Pregnancy also increases hemorrhoid risk because of increased pressure in the pelvic area and hormonal changes that affect blood vessel walls. Other contributing factors include sitting for long periods, low-fiber diets, dehydration, aging, and a family history of hemorrhoids. Some people are simply born with weaker blood vessel walls, making them more prone to hemorrhoid formation.

Common symptoms include itching around the anus, pain or discomfort (especially when sitting), bright red bleeding during or after bowel movements, and a lump or swelling near the anus. Symptoms can range from mild to severe. Understanding what's causing your hemorrhoids is the first step toward managing them at home, since treatment approaches differ depending on the underlying cause.

Practical Takeaway: Keep a simple log of when symptoms occur and what activities preceded them. This information helps you identify your personal triggers, whether they're diet-related, activity-related, or stress-related.

Dietary Changes That Reduce Hemorrhoid Symptoms

Diet plays a significant role in hemorrhoid management. Most hemorrhoid problems are connected to constipation or straining, and constipation is almost always linked to insufficient fiber intake. The average American consumes about 15 grams of fiber daily, but health organizations recommend 25-35 grams per day for adults. Increasing fiber gradually helps your body adjust and reduces bloating and gas that sometimes occur with sudden dietary changes.

Soluble fiber, found in foods like oats, beans, apples, and barley, dissolves in water and creates a gel-like substance that softens stool. Insoluble fiber, found in whole wheat, vegetables, and nuts, adds bulk to stool and helps it move through your system more quickly. Both types are important for preventing the hard, dry stools that lead to straining. A study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology found that patients who increased their fiber intake experienced significant relief from hemorrhoid symptoms within two to three weeks.

Specific foods to include more of include:

• Leafy greens like spinach and kale (5-7 grams of fiber per cooked cup)
• Berries, especially raspberries and blackberries (8 grams of fiber per cup)
• Legumes like lentils and chickpeas (15+ grams of fiber per cooked cup)
• Whole grain bread and brown rice instead of white varieties
• Nuts and seeds as snacks (almonds have 3.5 grams of fiber per ounce)
• Sweet potatoes with skin (6 grams of fiber per medium potato)

Equally important is staying hydrated. Water helps soften stool and prevents constipation. Most health professionals recommend drinking about 8-10 glasses of water daily, though individual needs vary based on activity level, climate, and overall health. Limiting caffeine and alcohol can also help, as these substances can be dehydrating.

Practical Takeaway: Start by adding one high-fiber food to each meal this week. For example, add berries to breakfast, include beans in lunch, and add extra vegetables to dinner. Increase water intake by one glass daily until you reach your target amount.

Topical Treatments and Over-the-Counter Options

Several over-the-counter products can help manage hemorrhoid symptoms at home. These are available without a prescription and work through different mechanisms to reduce itching, pain, and swelling. It's important to understand how each type works so you can choose the most appropriate option for your symptoms.

Topical creams and ointments are among the most popular over-the-counter options. Many contain hydrocortisone, a mild steroid that reduces inflammation and itching. Others contain witch hazel, a natural astringent that has been used for centuries to reduce swelling and soothe irritated skin. Products with petroleum jelly or mineral oil create a protective barrier and help with lubrication. Some formulations combine multiple ingredients—for example, a cream might contain both hydrocortisone and an anesthetic like benzocaine to address both inflammation and pain.

Medicated pads soaked with witch hazel or hydrocortisone offer a convenient alternative to creams, especially for cleaning and soothing after bowel movements. These pads are disposable and portable, making them practical for use at work or while traveling. Suppositories are inserted into the rectum and work well for internal hemorrhoids, releasing medication directly where it's needed.

When selecting products, read labels carefully to understand active ingredients. Some people respond better to one type of medication than another. It's reasonable to try different products to find what works best for you. However, avoid using topical products with steroids for more than a week without consulting a healthcare provider, as prolonged use can thin the skin.

Stool softeners are another category of over-the-counter treatment that addresses the root cause—constipation. Products containing docusate sodium help water mix into stool, making it softer and easier to pass without straining. Unlike laxatives, stool softeners work gently and don't cause dependency with regular use.

Practical Takeaway: Keep a small container of medicated pads or a tube of over-the-counter hemorrhoid cream in your bathroom. Establish a routine of using these products after each bowel movement to manage symptoms consistently rather than waiting until discomfort is severe.

Bathroom Habits and Personal Hygiene Practices

How you use the bathroom significantly impacts hemorrhoid symptoms. Many people don't realize that their bathroom habits are actually worsening their condition. Making specific changes to your routine can bring noticeable relief within days.

Straining is one of the most damaging activities for people with hemorrhoids. Straining increases pressure in the anal area and can cause hemorrhoids to enlarge or bleed. The average person should spend no more than 5-10 minutes on the toilet. If you're not having a bowel movement within that time, get up and try again later rather than continuing to strain. Never use the toilet as a reading or scrolling spot—this encourages prolonged sitting and often leads to straining.

After bowel movements, clean the area gently. Harsh wiping with dry toilet paper can irritate hemorrhoids and delay healing. Instead, try these gentler approaches:

• Use soft, damp toilet paper or wet wipes (avoid those with alcohol or perfume, which can irritate)
• Use a bidet or bidet attachment if available—this provides thorough, gentle cleaning
• Gently pat dry after cleansing rather than rubbing
• Fill a shallow basin with warm water and sit in it for a few minutes (this is called a sitz bath)

Sitz baths are particularly effective for hemorrhoid relief. Sitting in 2-3 inches of warm water for 10-15 minutes several times daily, especially after bowel movements, reduces pain and promotes healing. The warmth increases blood flow to the area and relaxes muscles. Many pharmacies sell inexpensive sitz bath kits that fit over toilet seats, making this treatment convenient. Some people add Epsom
