Notify Social Security When Someone Dies Guide

Why Notifying Social Security About a Death Matters

When someone passes away, notifying Social Security is one of the most important steps a family needs to take. Social Security keeps detailed records about every person who has a Social Security number, and the agency needs accurate information to process payments correctly and prevent fraud.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) manages payments for millions of Americans each month. In 2023, Social Security paid benefits to approximately 67 million people, including retirees, disabled workers, and surviving family members. When a beneficiary dies, the SSA needs to stop their payments immediately and adjust any household benefits that may have been tied to that person's record.

Failing to report a death can create serious problems. Family members may continue receiving payments that they are no longer entitled to receive, which the government can demand back with interest. Banks and other financial institutions may also flag accounts that continue receiving deposits after someone has died, creating complications for the family handling the estate.

In some cases, funeral homes or hospitals may notify Social Security automatically, but this is not guaranteed. The responsible person—usually a family member or the executor of an estate—should make their own report to ensure the notification is processed promptly. Speed matters because Social Security payments for the month in which a person dies may still be sent, and the family will need to return that final payment.

Key takeaway: Reporting a death to Social Security should happen as soon as possible after death is confirmed. This prevents overpayments, protects family members from having to repay benefits, and ensures surviving family members receive any payments they may be entitled to.

Understanding Which Deaths Must Be Reported to Social Security

Not every death requires a Social Security report, but most do. The key question is whether the deceased person was receiving any Social Security benefits or had a Social Security number on file with active or recent accounts.

The following people need to be reported to Social Security:

• Someone who was receiving Social Security retirement benefits
• Someone who was receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments
• Someone who was receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments
• A child who was receiving benefits based on a parent's or grandparent's record
• A surviving spouse or ex-spouse who was receiving benefits based on the deceased's work record
• Anyone else with an active Social Security case file at the time of death

If the deceased person was not receiving any Social Security benefits and had not filed for them, reporting may not be required, but it is still a good idea to notify the agency. This ensures Social Security records are accurate and current.

In 2022, the SSA processed reports of over 2.8 million deaths. The majority of these came from family members, though hospitals, nursing homes, and funeral directors also submit reports. Each report helps the agency update its records and prevent fraudulent use of deceased people's Social Security numbers.

If someone was receiving benefits as a surviving spouse or child based on a deceased worker's record, that death report may trigger benefit changes for other family members. For example, when a retiree dies, a surviving spouse may become entitled to widow's or widower's benefits. The SSA uses death reports to calculate these new benefit amounts.

Key takeaway: If the deceased person was receiving any form of Social Security benefits, the death must be reported. When in doubt, it is better to report the death than to assume it is not necessary.

How to Report a Death to Social Security

There are several ways to notify Social Security about a death. The method chosen may depend on the reporter's location, access to information, and personal preference.

Phone Reporting

The most direct method is calling Social Security's main number: 1-800-772-1213. This line is available Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time. When calling, the person reporting should have the deceased's Social Security number, date of birth, and date of death ready. The phone representative will record the information and process the report on the spot.

In-Person Reporting

Family members can visit a local Social Security office to report a death. This method allows people to speak with an agent face-to-face and provide original or certified documents if needed. To find the nearest office, people can use the office locator on the Social Security website. Walk-in hours vary by location, and some offices require appointments.

Online Reporting

For deaths reported by funeral directors or medical professionals, Social Security offers an online system called the Electronic Death Registration Service (eEDRS). This system is not open to the general public, but funeral homes use it regularly to report deaths to the SSA as part of their standard procedures.

Mail Reporting

A letter can be mailed to the local Social Security office with the deceased's name, Social Security number, date of birth, date of death, and the reporter's name and contact information. While mail is slower than phone or in-person contact, it creates a written record of the report.

The SSA recommends reporting a death within two months. However, prompt reporting—within days—is best to prevent complications with bank accounts and ongoing benefit payments.

Key takeaway: Calling 1-800-772-1213 is usually the fastest way to report a death. Have the deceased's Social Security number and date of death ready when calling.

What Information You Will Need When Reporting

Having the right information ready before contacting Social Security makes the reporting process faster and more accurate. The SSA will ask for several key details about the deceased person.

Essential Information

• The deceased person's full name, exactly as it appears on their Social Security card
• Social Security number
• Date of birth
• Date of death
• Place of death (city and state)
• The reporter's name, relationship to the deceased, and contact information

If the reporter is calling on behalf of someone else, the SSA may verify the caller's identity and relationship to the deceased. This protects privacy and prevents fraudulent death reports.

Where to Find This Information

The deceased person's Social Security number can usually be found on their Social Security card, tax returns, bank statements, pension documents, or previous Social Security correspondence. The date of birth and death should be on the death certificate. If a death certificate has not yet been issued, the reporter can still call Social Security with the date of death and note that an official death certificate will follow.

It is a good idea to gather documents before calling. This preparation helps the conversation go smoothly and reduces the chance of having to call back with missing information.

If Information Is Not Immediately Available

The SSA understands that family members may not have all details on hand immediately after a death. If a Social Security number is not known, the SSA can look up the record using the person's name, date of birth, and mother's maiden name. However, having the Social Security number makes the process much faster.

Key takeaway: Collect the deceased person's Social Security number, date of birth, and date of death before calling Social Security. If these are not available, the SSA can search records using the person's name and other identifying information.

What Happens After You Report a Death

Once Social Security receives a death report, the agency takes several steps to update records and notify other government programs that may be affected.

Immediate Actions by Social Security

Within one to two business days of receiving a death report, the SSA stops the deceased person's benefits. This prevents additional payments from being issued. If a benefit payment for the month of death has already been sent, the SSA will send instructions to family members about returning that money. The returned amount is typically sent to the funeral home, the estate, or directly to the family member who received the payment.
