Build Your Own Go Kart Educational Guide

Understanding Go Kart Basics and Components

A go kart is a small, open-wheel vehicle that typically seats one or two people and runs on four wheels. Before building your own, it's important to understand the fundamental parts that make a go kart function. The chassis forms the frame and structural foundation of the vehicle. Most homemade go karts use steel tubing welded together in a rectangular or triangular pattern. The engine provides power, usually a small gasoline engine ranging from 5 to 15 horsepower for recreational builds. The wheels and tires need to be appropriately sized for the chassis weight and intended use—most builder go karts use wheels between 5 and 8 inches in diameter.

The steering system allows the driver to control direction through a steering wheel connected to the front axle via linkages or tie rods. The braking system is critical for safety and typically involves either cable-operated or hydraulic brakes on the rear wheels. The drivetrain transfers engine power to the wheels, commonly using either a chain and sprocket system or a belt drive. The seat must be positioned to distribute the driver's weight properly across the chassis. Understanding how each component works together helps you make informed decisions about what type of build suits your needs, whether that's a simple lawn mower engine kart for casual fun or a more complex build for racing.

Practical Takeaway: Before purchasing any materials, create a simple sketch of what you envision and label each major component. Research what size engine and wheel configuration fits the weight capacity you're designing for.

Tools, Materials, and Safety Equipment You'll Need

Building a go kart requires both hand tools and power tools. Essential hand tools include wrenches (metric and standard), sockets, screwdrivers, adjustable wrenches, and pliers. You'll need power tools such as a drill with bits, an angle grinder for cutting metal, and ideally a welder if you plan to weld the frame together. A circular saw or band saw helps cut tubing and metal. Safety equipment is absolutely non-negotiable—welding requires a welding helmet, leather apron, and welding gloves. When working with power tools and engines, safety glasses should be worn at all times. Hearing protection is essential when operating loud equipment like angle grinders and engines. Steel-toed boots protect your feet from dropped metal pieces or rolling equipment.

Material costs for a basic go kart build typically range from $300 to $1,500 depending on the complexity and whether you source used components. Steel tubing for the frame costs between $100 and $300 depending on wall thickness and diameter. A used small engine—often sourced from a lawn mower, snow blower, or purchased new—ranges from $80 to $400. Wheels and tires typically cost $100 to $300 for a set of four. A steering wheel, pedals, and seat might cost $50 to $200 combined. Sprockets, chains, belts, and bearings add another $75 to $150. Hardware like bolts, nuts, and fasteners typically runs $30 to $50 for a complete build. Many builders find used or salvaged components at junkyards, online marketplaces, or from retired equipment, which significantly reduces costs. Consider renting expensive tools like welders or power tools rather than buying them if this is your first project.

Practical Takeaway: Create a detailed materials list with part numbers and current prices from multiple suppliers. Visit local salvage yards or online marketplaces to identify cost-saving opportunities on used components like engines and wheels.

Frame Design and Construction Methods

The frame is the skeleton of your go kart and must be strong enough to support the engine, driver weight, and forces created during operation. The most common frame design for homemade karts uses a rectangular or slightly trapezoidal layout with four main corner supports. Steel tubing with a diameter of 1 to 1.5 inches and wall thickness of 0.065 to 0.120 inches works well for most recreational builds. The frame typically measures 40 to 60 inches long and 30 to 40 inches wide. If you plan to weld the frame, you'll need access to a MIG welder or TIG welder. MIG welders are generally more beginner-friendly than TIG welders.

If welding isn't available to you, you can construct a frame using bolted connections with gusset plates at joints for reinforcement. Gusset plates are triangular or rectangular pieces of steel welded or bolted across joints to provide additional strength. Tube notching—cutting specific angles where tubes meet—creates stronger bolted joints than simply overlapping tubes. For a bolted frame, use grade 5 or 8 bolts with lock washers to prevent loosening from vibration. Many builders start with a design they find in instructional books or online kart building communities, then modify it based on available materials and intended use.

The frame must include mounting points for the engine, steering components, wheels, brakes, and seat. When positioning the engine, consider weight distribution—placing it slightly toward the rear of the chassis improves handling. Leave adequate space between the engine and frame for cooling air circulation. The frame should also include tie-down points if you plan to transport the kart on a trailer. Some builders add a roll cage for additional safety, particularly for faster builds. Before welding or bolting everything together, test-fit all components to ensure proper alignment and spacing.

Practical Takeaway: Draw your frame design to scale on graph paper, marking all component locations and measurements. Check that your frame design accommodates wheel size, engine position, and driver seating before purchasing materials.

Engine Selection and Installation

Choosing the right engine is critical to your go kart's performance and reliability. Small gasoline engines used in many homemade karts typically range from 5 to 15 horsepower. A 5 to 7 horsepower engine is suitable for casual riding and learning, producing speeds around 15 to 25 miles per hour. A 10 to 12 horsepower engine can reach 30 to 40 miles per hour and handles inclines better. Engines larger than 15 horsepower are overkill for most recreational builds and create safety challenges for inexperienced drivers. Horizontal-shaft engines (where the crankshaft runs parallel to the ground) work best for chain and sprocket drive systems. Vertical-shaft engines are designed for lawn mowers and require modification to work in karts.

Used lawn mower or snow blower engines are often the most economical choice, though new small engines are available from manufacturers like Briggs & Stratton, Honda, and Kohler. When selecting a used engine, check that it starts easily and runs smoothly without strange noises. Inspect the oil level, spark plug, and air filter. A used engine in working condition costs significantly less than new. When installing the engine on your frame, mount it securely using rubber or solid engine mounts that allow for slight vibration isolation. Ensure the engine is positioned so the cooling fins have air circulation and exhaust can exit safely away from the driver. Most engine installations require a custom mounting bracket welded or bolted to the frame.

The engine requires a fuel tank, which can be a small plastic container or a salvaged motorcycle fuel tank positioned low on the frame for better weight distribution and reduced spillage risk. Include a fuel shutoff valve and keep the fuel line away from hot engine surfaces. Connect a spark plug wire with a proper terminal end, ensure the ignition switch is accessible to the driver, and install a throttle cable from the engine's carburetor to the driver's pedal. The engine should be tested on the frame before connecting the drivetrain to verify it runs smoothly and that all cooling and exhaust are unobstructed.

Practical Takeaway: Before purchasing an engine, clearly understand horsepower requirements for your intended use and weight capacity. Test any used engine thoroughly before committing to buy, and verify that engine mounting points can be added to your frame design.

Drivetrain, Steering, and Brake Systems

The drivetrain transfers engine power to the wheels and is one of the most important systems for performance and safety. The two primary methods for homemade karts are chain-and-sprocket and belt-drive systems. Chain drive involves connecting the engine's output shaft to a sprocket, then running a chain to a larger sprocket attached to the rear axle. This system provides direct power transfer and is adjustable
