Learn How Warts Form and Spread

What Are Warts and How Do They Form

Warts are small, rough growths that appear on the skin and are caused by the human papillomavirus, commonly called HPV. This virus has more than 100 different types, and several of these types can cause warts on various parts of your body. When HPV enters your skin through tiny cuts or breaks in the outer layer, it infects the cells and causes them to grow abnormally, creating the bumpy texture you see and feel.

The formation of a wart typically takes weeks or even months after the initial infection. During this time, you may not notice any symptoms while the virus works beneath the surface. The virus stimulates your skin cells to divide and multiply much faster than normal. These extra cells pile up and create the raised, hardened bump that becomes visible. The outer layer of a wart is often thicker and harder than surrounding skin, which is why warts feel distinct to the touch.

Different types of HPV produce different kinds of warts. Common warts typically appear on the hands and fingers and have a rough, bumpy surface. Plantar warts grow on the bottom of the feet and can be quite painful because of the pressure from walking. Flat warts are smaller and smoother, often appearing on the face, neck, or legs. Genital warts develop in the genital area and require medical attention. Understanding which type of wart you have can help you know what to expect and how to manage it.

The reason warts form in some people and not others comes down to immune system function and individual susceptibility. Your immune system plays a major role in fighting off HPV before a wart develops. People with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop warts and may find that warts persist longer. Age also matters—children and young adults tend to get common warts more often than older adults, though warts can develop at any age.

Practical Takeaway: Warts form when HPV enters the skin through breaks or cuts and causes cells to multiply abnormally over several weeks or months. Recognizing the type of wart you have—whether common, plantar, flat, or genital—helps you understand its characteristics and potential treatment options.

How Warts Spread from Person to Person

Warts spread from one person to another through direct contact with infected skin. When someone with a wart touches another person's skin, especially if there are any small cuts or abrasions, the HPV virus can transfer and establish a new infection. This is why warts are considered contagious, though the level of contagiousness varies depending on the type of wart and the condition of the skin involved.

The transmission of warts requires more than just casual contact in many cases. The virus needs an entry point into the skin—a microscopic break in the outer layer. This is why people who work in environments where their hands are frequently wet or damaged, such as butchers or fishmongers, historically had higher rates of warts. Moisture softens the outer skin layer and makes it more vulnerable to both virus entry and transmission. Activities like swimming or showering in communal areas can increase exposure to HPV because these environments are warm, moist, and may have small cuts on swimmers' feet.

Person-to-person transmission of plantar warts happens most commonly in environments like swimming pools, locker rooms, communal showers, and gym floors. Research shows that approximately 7 to 12 percent of the population has warts at any given time, making exposure relatively common. However, not everyone who contacts HPV will develop a visible wart. Studies indicate that infection rates vary, but the virus may need repeated or prolonged contact with the infected area for transmission to occur successfully.

Certain behaviors increase the risk of spreading warts to others. Picking at warts or scratching them can create open areas that shed more virus particles and increase contagiousness. Sharing personal items like towels, nail files, razors, or pumice stones can facilitate transmission, particularly among family members living in the same household. Children in schools and daycare settings may share warts among themselves through playground contact and shared equipment. Athletes in contact sports have elevated transmission rates compared to the general population.

Practical Takeaway: Warts spread through direct skin-to-person contact, especially when there are breaks in the skin barrier. Warm, moist environments like pools and locker rooms increase transmission risk, as do behaviors like picking at warts and sharing personal grooming tools.

Environmental Factors That Increase Wart Transmission

Certain environmental conditions significantly increase the likelihood of HPV transmission and wart development. Moisture is one of the most important factors—warm, wet environments create ideal conditions for the virus to spread and for skin to become vulnerable to infection. Public pools and hot tubs maintain warm temperatures and moisture levels that make skin more permeable to viral entry. The combination of HPV-infected skin shedding virus particles in water, plus multiple swimmers with small cuts from diving or scraping against pool edges, creates high-risk conditions.

Temperature plays a role in wart transmission as well. The virus spreads more efficiently in warm environments than in cold ones, which is partly why wart transmission increases during summer months when more people swim and spend time in communal water settings. However, indoor pools and heated facilities mean transmission can occur year-round in many regions. Humidity levels also matter—highly humid environments soften skin and make it more permeable to viral invasion.

Shared surfaces in communal spaces present ongoing transmission risks. Locker room benches, shower floors, gym equipment, and communal changing areas can harbor HPV particles shed by infected individuals. Studies have found HPV DNA on surfaces in public facilities, though the exact risk of transmission through environmental surfaces remains unclear. Floors in communal areas present particular risk for plantar warts because feet walk on these surfaces barefoot and may have small abrasions from walking or from pedicure activities.

Household environments also create transmission opportunities, particularly in families with children. Shared bathrooms, communal towels, and close living quarters mean family members have frequent skin-to-skin contact. Parents may transmit warts to children, or siblings to each other, through normal household activities. Shared beds, hugging, and activities like wrestling increase contact opportunities. Certain household grooming practices also increase risk—sharing nail clippers, foot files, or razors can transfer the virus if these tools cut or abraded skin.

Practical Takeaway: Warm, moist environments like pools and communal showers create high-risk conditions for wart transmission. Household settings with shared towels and grooming tools also facilitate spread, particularly among family members in close contact.

Why Some People Are More Susceptible to Warts

Individual immune system function is the primary factor determining who develops warts after HPV exposure. Your immune system's ability to recognize and fight off HPV varies from person to person based on genetics, overall health status, and immune system maturity. People with strong, healthy immune systems often encounter HPV without ever developing a visible wart because their immune cells eliminate the virus before it can establish an infection. Conversely, people with weakened or compromised immune systems may develop warts more easily and find them more difficult to eliminate.

Age significantly influences wart susceptibility and prevalence. Children ages 12 to 16 have the highest rates of common hand warts, with studies showing that 10 to 20 percent of school-age children have at least one wart at some point. Adolescents and young adults continue to have relatively high wart rates. Wart prevalence typically decreases with age as the immune system becomes increasingly effective at managing HPV. By age 40, the rate of warts drops substantially compared to younger age groups. This pattern reflects both immune system maturation and reduced exposure opportunities as people age.

Certain medical conditions and circumstances increase wart susceptibility. People with HIV or AIDS, which severely compromise immune function, develop warts at much higher rates and may experience particularly stubborn warts that are difficult to treat. Organ transplant recipients take immunosuppressive medications to prevent rejection, which increases their wart development rates. People undergoing chemotherapy or radiation for cancer treatment also experience increased wart susceptibility during treatment. Chronic diseases that affect immune function, such as diabetes, may slightly increase wart risk in some individuals.

Occupational factors create different exposure levels that affect wart development. People who work with their hands in wet environments—such as fishmongers, butchers, swimmers, and healthcare workers—historically show higher wart rates. This increased rate reflects both
