Learn How to Add Stops on Lyft Rides

Understanding Lyft's Multiple Stop Feature

Lyft offers a built-in feature that lets you add multiple stops to a single ride. This means you can pick up passengers, drop them off at one location, and then continue to additional destinations without ending the ride or requesting a new vehicle. The feature works by allowing you to input up to three stops before your final destination when you're booking through the Lyft app.

The multiple stops feature was introduced to address a common travel need: many people need to make brief visits to different locations during a single trip. Instead of requesting three separate rides, you can combine them into one journey. This approach can save time coordinating pickups and dropoffs, and it may result in lower overall costs compared to booking multiple individual rides.

According to Lyft's platform data, riders who use the multiple stops feature report completing their errands more efficiently. For example, someone might start at their home, stop at a grocery store, then visit a pharmacy, and finally arrive at work—all within a single ride request. The driver follows the route in the order you've specified, stopping at each location sequentially.

The feature is available in most Lyft service areas, though availability can vary by city and region. It works with standard Lyft and Lyft XL vehicles. Understanding how this feature operates helps you plan your trips more effectively and manage your transportation needs throughout your day.

Practical Takeaway: The multiple stops feature lets you combine several errands into one ride, which can save you time compared to booking separate vehicles for each location.

How to Add Stops Before Requesting Your Ride

Adding stops to your Lyft ride begins before you request a vehicle. Open the Lyft app and enter your pickup location as you normally would. Instead of immediately entering just your final destination, look for the option to add stops. On most versions of the Lyft app, you'll see a "+" icon or an "Add stop" button near the destination field.

Tap this option to add your first stop. The app will open a new field where you can enter the address or location name of your first stop. You can search by typing the address, the business name, or even just a general description of the location. For example, you could type "CVS pharmacy on Main Street" or a full street address. The app's search function will show you matching locations based on what you've typed.

After selecting your first stop, the app returns you to the main screen with that stop now visible in your route. You'll see the option to add another stop if needed. Lyft currently allows up to three stops before your final destination, meaning you can have up to four total locations in one ride (pickup, stop one, stop two, stop three, then final destination).

When entering each stop, take time to verify the correct location appears. The app will show you the address and may display the location on a map. This step matters because if you select the wrong store or address, your driver will navigate to that incorrect location, requiring corrections mid-ride. Use the map preview to confirm you've chosen the right spot before confirming each stop.

Practical Takeaway: Add all your stops before requesting your ride by using the "Add stop" button in the Lyft app, and verify each location on the map to make sure they're correct.

Ordering Your Stops and Planning Your Route

The order in which you arrange your stops matters because your driver will visit them in the sequence you've specified. When you add stops, think carefully about the most logical order based on the actual locations. For example, if you're traveling from your home and need to visit three locations before reaching your final destination, arrange them in geographical order rather than randomly.

Planning your route before requesting your ride makes the trip more efficient. Consider traffic patterns and distances between stops. If two stops are very close to each other, list them consecutively so your driver doesn't backtrack. For instance, if you're going from home and there's a grocery store and a bank two blocks apart, both should be listed before you travel to a location across town.

You can rearrange stops after adding them by holding and dragging them in the app interface. This allows you to adjust the order if you change your mind or realize a different sequence would be faster. Some riders find it helpful to map out their stops mentally or even use a separate maps app to understand the geography before finalizing their route in Lyft.

Keep in mind that adding multiple stops may increase your total ride time compared to a direct route. Lyft's estimated fare and arrival time will account for the additional stops. The app shows you the estimated total time for the complete journey, including time spent at each stop. Most stops add about 5 to 10 minutes to your ride time, depending on the distance between locations.

Practical Takeaway: Arrange your stops in a logical geographical order to reduce backtracking and unnecessary travel time, and use the app's rearrange feature if you need to change the sequence.

Understanding Time and Costs with Multiple Stops

Lyft charges for multiple-stop rides based on distance and time, similar to regular rides. The fare is calculated for the entire route, including all stops. According to Lyft's pricing model, you're charged for the total distance traveled and the total time spent in the vehicle, including brief stops at each location.

The base fare, per-minute rate, and per-mile rate are the same whether you make one stop or three stops. However, your total fare will be higher because the total distance and time are greater. Lyft estimates your fare before you request the ride, showing you the projected cost for the complete multi-stop journey. This estimate appears on your screen so you can decide whether to proceed.

Most people find that using the multiple stops feature costs less than requesting separate individual rides. If you were to book three separate Lyft rides instead of one ride with three stops, you'd pay three separate base fares plus the time and distance for each trip. The multiple-stop approach eliminates those additional base fares, resulting in savings.

The amount of time you spend at each stop doesn't typically increase your fare if the stops are brief—under a minute or two. However, if you spend several minutes at a stop, the per-minute charge continues to apply. This means that if you sit in the car at a stop for 10 minutes while your driver waits, you're being charged for those 10 minutes at the per-minute rate.

Surge pricing may apply to rides with multiple stops just as it applies to regular rides. If demand is high in your area at the time you request the ride, the fare may be higher. This surge pricing applies to the entire multi-stop route, not to each stop individually.

Practical Takeaway: Multiple-stop rides typically cost less than booking separate rides, but factor in that waiting time at each stop continues to accrue charges at Lyft's per-minute rate.

Communication with Your Driver About Multiple Stops

Your Lyft driver receives information about all your stops when they accept your ride request. The driver's app shows the complete route with all stops mapped out, so they understand the full journey before picking you up. This transparency helps drivers decide whether to accept the ride, as they can see how much driving is involved.

When your driver picks you up, they have all the stop information already loaded in their navigation system. You don't need to tell them your stops verbally unless there's been a change. However, it's courteous to acknowledge the stops when you get in the car—something like "Thanks for taking me to these three locations" helps set clear expectations.

If you need to change a stop or cancel one after the ride has started, you can communicate this through the app or by speaking to your driver directly. The app allows you to remove stops or modify them in some cases, though availability of this feature depends on how far along your route you are. If you're already at the first stop, you may not be able to edit stops using the app.

Be aware that if you request a stop but don't actually get out of the vehicle at that location, your driver will still navigate there, which wastes time. Similarly, if you realize you don't need a stop anymore, letting your driver know quickly prevents unnecessary navigation. Open communication prevents misunderstandings and ensures your driver knows what to expect.
