Learn How to Use Signal for Private Messaging

What Signal Is and How It Differs From Other Messaging Apps

Signal is a messaging application designed with privacy as its main feature. Unlike some other messaging platforms that collect user data for advertising or other purposes, Signal operates on the principle that your conversations should remain private between you and the person you're talking to. The app was created by the Signal Foundation, a nonprofit organization, and the underlying technology is open-source, meaning experts can examine how it works.

Signal allows you to send text messages, make voice calls, and share photos or documents through an internet connection rather than through traditional cell phone networks. This is similar to apps like WhatsApp or Telegram, but Signal takes a different approach to how messages are protected. The application uses end-to-end encryption, which means messages are scrambled in a way that only you and the recipient can read them. Even Signal's own servers cannot see the contents of your messages.

The key difference between Signal and many competing apps is transparency. Signal publishes its security practices openly and allows security researchers to test its systems. The organization doesn't have a profit motive, which means there's less incentive to collect or sell your personal information. Signal also doesn't require you to create an account with a username or password; it uses your phone number as your identifier instead.

Signal works across different devices including smartphones and computers. If you use an iPhone, Android phone, Windows computer, or Mac, you can install Signal and message people across platforms. The app requires an internet connection through Wi-Fi or mobile data, so it won't work for traditional SMS texting unless you're connected to the internet.

Practical Takeaway: Signal is a privacy-focused messaging app that encrypts your conversations so only you and the recipient can read them. It's different from regular text messaging and requires an internet connection, but it offers stronger privacy protections than many mainstream messaging platforms.

Getting Started: Installing and Setting Up Signal

To use Signal, you first need to get the app on your device. For smartphones, you can find Signal in the Apple App Store if you have an iPhone, or in Google Play if you have an Android phone. Search for "Signal" and look for the official app created by the Signal Foundation. The app is free to obtain and use, with no hidden charges or premium versions that cost money.

Once you've obtained the app, open it and follow the initial setup process. Signal will ask for your phone number—this is how other people find you and how you verify your identity. Enter your phone number in the correct format for your country. Signal will then send you a verification code through an SMS text message. Check your text messages for this code and enter it into the app. This step confirms that the phone number you entered actually belongs to you.

After verification, you'll create a profile. This typically includes adding a name (you can use your real name or a nickname) and optionally adding a profile photo. Unlike some messaging apps, Signal keeps your profile information minimal. You won't be asked for extensive personal details, email addresses, or payment information.

Signal stores your contacts information locally on your device. When you open Signal for the first time, it will ask for permission to access your phone's contact list. If you grant this permission, Signal scans your existing contacts to see which of your friends already use Signal. You can start messaging anyone in your contacts who also has Signal installed. If you prefer not to share your contact list, you can decline this permission and manually search for people or have them share their Signal information with you directly.

For computer users, Signal offers a desktop application for Windows and Mac computers. You can obtain the desktop version by visiting the official Signal website or through your computer's app store. The desktop version connects to your phone—you'll scan a QR code on your computer using the Signal app on your phone to link them. Your messages sync across devices, so you can continue conversations on your computer or phone seamlessly.

Practical Takeaway: Installing Signal involves obtaining the app from an official app store, verifying your phone number with a text message code, creating a basic profile, and optionally granting access to your contacts. The entire setup process takes just a few minutes and doesn't require payment or extensive personal information.

Understanding Signal's Privacy and Encryption Features

Signal's primary feature is end-to-end encryption, which means your messages are converted into a code that only you and the recipient can decode. When you send a message through Signal, it's encrypted on your device before it leaves. It travels to Signal's servers in this encrypted form, but the servers cannot read it. The message remains encrypted until it reaches the recipient's device, where it's decrypted using a unique key only they possess.

This system uses something called the Signal Protocol, which is considered one of the strongest encryption methods available for messaging applications. The protocol was developed by security researchers and has been studied extensively by the cryptography community. If someone tries to intercept your messages—whether it's a hacker, your internet service provider, or a government agency—they would see only scrambled data that cannot be read without the correct decryption key.

Signal also offers features that enhance privacy beyond just encryption. For instance, you can set messages to disappear after a certain amount of time. This is called "disappearing messages" or "message expiration." When you enable this feature on a conversation, messages automatically delete from both devices after the time period you set—whether that's 30 seconds, 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day, or 1 week. This means there's no permanent record of the conversation stored on either device.

Another privacy feature is the ability to turn off read receipts. Read receipts are notifications that tell the sender when you've seen their message. Some people prefer not to send these notifications, so Signal allows you to disable them in your settings. You can choose whether others see when you've read their messages, and you can turn this setting off for specific conversations or for all your chats.

Signal also uses something called sealed sender, which means the recipient cannot see who sent a message until the message is decrypted on their device. This adds an additional layer of privacy by preventing even Signal's servers from having complete information about who is communicating with whom. This feature is turned on by default for messages to people not in your contacts.

It's important to understand that encryption protects the content of your messages, but not all metadata. Metadata includes information like who you're messaging, when you sent the message, and how often you communicate with someone. Signal stores some metadata on its servers, though it's minimal compared to other platforms. If privacy regarding your communication patterns is a concern, you should be aware that this information isn't protected by end-to-end encryption.

Practical Takeaway: Signal encrypts your messages so only you and the recipient can read them using a strong security method. Additional features like disappearing messages, read receipt control, and sealed sender provide extra privacy options you can adjust based on your preferences.

Sending Messages, Making Calls, and Sharing Files on Signal

Sending a text message on Signal is similar to using any other messaging app. Open the app, select a contact or create a new chat by finding someone in your contacts, and tap the message input field at the bottom of the screen. Type your message and tap the send button. The message will be delivered when you have an internet connection. Unlike text messages sent through your cell carrier, Signal messages require data or Wi-Fi to be sent and received.

Signal also allows you to make voice calls and video calls through the app. To make a voice call, open a conversation with someone and look for the phone icon (usually in the upper right corner of the chat). Tap it to call that person. If they're available and have the Signal app open, they'll receive a notification about your call. They can accept or decline the call. Video calls work the same way but use the video camera icon instead. Both voice and video calls are encrypted end-to-end, just like text messages.

If you want to call multiple people at once, Signal offers group calls. You can add up to several participants to a single call. This is useful for group conversations when you want to hear voices instead of typing messages. Group calls are also end-to-end encrypted. To start a group call, open a group chat and select the call option.

Sharing files is another common need in messaging. Signal allows you to share photos, videos, and documents. Look for the attachment or paperclip icon in the message input area. Tap it to browse your device's files. You can select a photo from your camera roll, a video you've recorded, or a document from your device's storage. Before
