Learn How to Update Instagram on Your Device

Understanding Instagram Updates and Why They Matter

Instagram regularly releases updates to improve how the app works on your device. These updates include new features, security improvements, and bug fixes that keep your account safer and the app running smoothly. When Meta (Instagram's parent company) releases an update, it typically means they've made changes to the code that runs the app, fixed problems users reported, or added brand-new tools for sharing and connecting with others.

Updates serve several important purposes. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that could expose your personal information or account to unauthorized access. Performance updates make the app run faster and use less battery power on your phone or tablet. Feature updates introduce new ways to edit photos, new messaging options, or changes to how your feed appears. Understanding why updates exist helps you recognize their value rather than viewing them as inconvenient interruptions.

The frequency of Instagram updates varies. Some months you might see multiple updates, while other months see just one or two. This depends on how much work Meta's engineering teams have completed and what issues need addressing. Each update gets tested before release, but problems can still slip through, which is why subsequent updates sometimes arrive quickly to fix those issues.

Your device's operating system—whether iOS or Android—affects how updates work. Apple's App Store and Google Play Store handle the distribution differently. iOS updates tend to roll out to all users at once, while Android updates sometimes appear gradually to different users over several days or weeks.

Practical Takeaway: Instagram updates are normal and necessary maintenance. They improve security, fix bugs, and add new features. You don't need to update immediately when a new version appears, but updating within a week or two keeps your app current and functional.

Checking Your Current Instagram Version

Before you update Instagram, it's useful to know what version you currently have. Your device stores this information in the app's settings page. Finding your version number takes just a few seconds and helps you confirm whether you need an update.

For iPhone Users: Open the Instagram app and tap the profile icon (usually a person silhouette) in the bottom right corner. Look for a menu icon—typically three horizontal lines or a gear symbol—and tap it. Scroll down to find "Settings and Privacy" or simply "Settings." Within that menu, look for "About" or "Help." The version number appears in this section. It typically shows as "Version 1XX.X" or similar. You can also check your app version through the App Store itself by going to your profile, selecting "Purchased" or "Apps and Subscriptions," and finding Instagram in your list.

For Android Users: Launch the Instagram app and tap your profile icon at the bottom right. Tap the menu icon (three lines) at the top right. Scroll down and select "Settings and Privacy," then "Settings." Look for "About Instagram" or "App Version." The version number displays here. You can also find this information in your device's Settings app: go to Settings, then Apps or Application Manager, find Instagram, and look at the version information shown there.

Version numbers follow a pattern that tells you roughly how current your app is. For example, version 300.0 is much older than version 350.5. If your version number is more than a few releases behind the current one (which you can check by visiting Instagram's official channels or the app stores), an update may be available.

Some users intentionally avoid updating because they prefer an older interface or worry about changes. This is a personal choice, though it does carry some risks regarding security and compatibility with new phone features.

Practical Takeaway: Check your Instagram version through the app's settings or your device's app store. This tells you whether your app is current or if an update is available. You can do this in under one minute.

Updating Instagram on iPhone and iPad

Updating Instagram on Apple devices happens through the App Store. Apple's system is straightforward: the App Store alerts you when updates are available, and you can choose to update whenever you're ready. Most iPhone and iPad users prefer to update during times when they're not using their device heavily, such as before bed or while their device is charging.

Method One—Through the App Store: Open the App Store app on your iPhone or iPad. Look at the bottom of the screen and find the icon labeled "Updates" (usually a clock or circular symbol). Tap it. You'll see a list of all your apps that have available updates. Scroll through this list until you locate Instagram. Next to the Instagram listing, you'll see an "Update" button. Tap this button to begin the update. Your device may ask for your Apple ID password or biometric authentication (Face ID, Touch ID). Enter these credentials. The update then begins downloading and installing. You can continue using your device during this process, though performance may be slightly slower.

Method Two—Through the Instagram App Entry: Open the App Store and use the search feature (magnifying glass icon at the bottom) to look for "Instagram." Tap on the Instagram app listing when it appears. If an update is available, you'll see an "Update" button instead of the "Open" button. Tap the update button and authenticate when prompted.

Automatic Updates: You can set your iPhone or iPad to update apps automatically. Go to Settings on your device, tap your Apple ID at the top of the screen, select "Media and Purchases," then "Automatic Downloads." Toggle on the option for "Apps." With this enabled, Instagram and all your other apps update automatically when connected to WiFi and power. Many people prefer this method because they never have to manually update.

The update typically takes between 30 seconds and 5 minutes depending on file size and your internet speed. WiFi connections are faster than cellular data, so updating on WiFi is recommended if you have the option.

Practical Takeaway: Update Instagram on iPhone or iPad through the App Store using the Updates section. You can update manually each time or set automatic updates in your device Settings. Both methods work well; choose whichever fits your routine.

Updating Instagram on Android Phones and Tablets

Android users update Instagram through Google Play Store, Google's marketplace for apps. The process is similar to iPhone updates but has some different steps. Android devices also have more flexibility in how you configure automatic updates, including options to update over cellular data rather than requiring WiFi.

If an update is available, you'll see an "Update" button. Tap it and wait for the download and installation to finish.

Automatic Updates on Android: Set up automatic updates by opening Google Play Store, tapping your profile icon, selecting "Settings," then "Network preferences." Choose "Auto-update apps." You have three options: "Off" (never auto-update), "Over any network" (updates using WiFi or cellular data), or "Over WiFi only" (updates only when connected to WiFi). Most people choose "Over WiFi only" to save cellular data. With automatic updates enabled, Instagram updates in the background without requiring your action.

Android updates sometimes roll out in stages, meaning not all users receive the latest version on the same day. If you don't see an update available yet, it may arrive within a few days. You can check back periodically or wait for the automatic notification.

Android also allows updates from other sources, but the Google Play Store is the safest and most reliable method. Never sideload Instagram from unknown websites, as this poses security risks.

Practical Takeaway: Update Instagram on Android through Google Play Store using the Manage Apps section or the app's individual listing. Configure automatic updates in Settings
