Learn How to Make YouTube Videos Private

Understanding YouTube Video Privacy Settings

YouTube offers three main privacy settings for videos you upload to the platform. Each setting controls who can see your video and how it appears on YouTube. Understanding these options helps you make informed decisions about your content before sharing it with others.

The first privacy setting is "Public." When you set a video to public, anyone on YouTube can find it through search, browse features, or recommendations. Your video appears in your channel's public video list, and viewers can share the link with others. This setting works well for content you want to reach the widest possible audience, such as tutorials, music, or educational material.

The second setting is "Unlisted." An unlisted video does not appear in YouTube's search results, your channel's video list, or recommendation features. However, anyone who has the direct link to the video can watch it. This setting is useful when you want to share videos with specific people without making them discoverable to the general public. Many creators use unlisted videos for sharing behind-the-scenes content with friends or family, or for embedding videos on websites where only intended viewers will see them.

The third setting is "Private." Private videos can only be watched by you and people you specifically give permission to view them. These videos do not appear anywhere publicly on YouTube. You must manually add email addresses of people you want to share the video with, and those people will receive notifications that they have been granted access.

YouTube also offers a "Scheduled" option that lets you set a specific date and time when a video will become available. Until that time, the video remains private and inaccessible to viewers.

Practical Takeaway: Before uploading a video, decide which privacy level matches your needs. Public works for content meant for general audiences, unlisted works for sharing with specific groups, and private works for personal or restricted content.

How to Make an Existing Video Private

If you have already uploaded a video to YouTube as public or unlisted, you can change its privacy setting to private at any time. The process takes only a few minutes and does not require you to re-upload the video. YouTube stores your video on their servers, and changing the privacy setting simply restricts who can access it.

To change a video to private, start by going to YouTube.com and signing in to your account. Click on your profile picture in the top right corner and select "Create a post" or navigate directly to YouTube Studio, which is YouTube's creator dashboard. In YouTube Studio, click on "Content" in the left menu to see all your uploaded videos.

Find the video you want to make private in the list of your videos. Hover over the video thumbnail and click the three-dot menu icon that appears. This opens a dropdown menu with several options. Select "Details" from this menu. This action takes you to the video details page where you can edit information about the video, including its privacy setting.

On the details page, look for the "Visibility" section. This section displays the current privacy setting of your video. Click on the dropdown menu next to the current setting. You will see three options: Public, Unlisted, and Private. Click on "Private." A dialog box may appear asking you to confirm this change. Click the confirmation button to apply the new setting.

YouTube will save this change, and your video will become private. If you had previously shared the link to this video publicly, that link will no longer work for people outside of your approved list. The video's view count and any comments it received will remain, but new viewers cannot access it unless you grant them permission.

Practical Takeaway: You can change any video's privacy setting from public or unlisted to private through YouTube Studio in just a few clicks, and the change takes effect immediately.

Granting Access to Private Videos

Once you have made a video private, only you can watch it automatically. To allow others to view your private video, you must grant them permission by adding their email addresses to an access list. YouTube will send notifications to these people, letting them know they can now watch the video.

To grant access to a private video, return to the video's details page in YouTube Studio using the same method described in the previous section. Locate the "Visibility" section and click on "Private." This expands additional options below the privacy setting. You will see a section for adding viewers.

In the viewers section, there is typically a button or field where you can enter email addresses. Click on this area and type the email address of someone you want to give access to the video. You can add multiple email addresses by entering them one at a time and selecting "Add" or pressing Enter after each address. YouTube will list all the email addresses you have added.

After you have entered all the email addresses of people you want to share the video with, click the "Save" button to apply these changes. YouTube sends an email notification to each person you added, informing them that they have access to view a private video on your channel. The email includes a link to the video, making it easy for them to find and watch it.

If you later decide to remove someone's access, you can return to the viewers list in the video details page and click the X button next to their email address. This removes them from the access list immediately, and they will no longer be able to watch the video unless you add them back later.

Keep in mind that this method only works for people who have a YouTube account associated with the email address you provide. The person must be signed into YouTube to watch the private video. YouTube does not send the access link to email addresses that are not connected to a YouTube account.

Practical Takeaway: Add viewers to your private videos by entering their email addresses in YouTube Studio, and YouTube will notify them so they can watch the video you have shared.

Managing Private Videos and Viewing Statistics

After you have made a video private and shared it with specific people, YouTube still tracks certain information about your video. You can monitor how many of your approved viewers have actually watched the video and gather other performance data through YouTube Studio.

In YouTube Studio, click on "Analytics" in the left menu to view statistics about your videos. You can select individual videos to see detailed information about watch time, viewer location, traffic sources, and more. For private videos, the analytics will only include data from the people you have granted access to.

YouTube displays several important metrics for private videos. Watch time shows the total number of minutes that approved viewers have spent watching your video. Views shows how many times the video has been clicked and played. Viewer retention indicates what percentage of the video most viewers watched before stopping. These statistics help you understand whether the video is engaging to your approved audience.

You can also see comments that approved viewers have left on your private video. Comments on private videos are visible only to you and the people you have given access. This feature is useful if you are sharing draft content with colleagues or gathering feedback from a small group of people.

If you notice that none of your approved viewers have watched the video yet, you might want to follow up with them directly. YouTube's notification email may have gone to their spam folder, or they may not have seen the notification. Sending a direct message or email reminder can help ensure your intended audience sees the content you have shared.

You should regularly review your list of approved viewers to ensure it is still accurate. People's email addresses and YouTube accounts may change, so checking occasionally helps prevent errors. You can update the viewer list at any time by editing the video details and adding or removing email addresses.

Practical Takeaway: Monitor your private video's performance through YouTube Studio's analytics to track views and engagement from your approved viewers.

Switching Between Privacy Settings: When and Why

Many creators find that their needs for a video's privacy setting change over time. A video might start as private while you are editing it, then become unlisted when you share it with a small group for feedback, and eventually become public when you are ready to release it widely. YouTube allows you to switch between privacy settings as many times as you need.

A common scenario involves making instructional videos private initially. You might record a video that you want to refine based on feedback before releasing it to the public. You can keep it private, share it with a trusted group of friends or colleagues by adding their email addresses, and receive their comments and suggestions. Once you have made improvements based on their feedback, you can change the video to public so that your broader audience can see the finished version.
