Learn How to Delete a Repost on TikTok

Understanding TikTok Reposts and Why You Might Want to Remove Them

A repost on TikTok is when you share another creator's video to your own profile. Unlike a traditional share or duet, a repost uploads the original video directly to your account, making it appear as though you posted it. TikTok's repost feature became widely available in 2023, giving users a way to amplify content they enjoy while crediting the original creator. When you repost something, the original creator's name appears at the top of the video, but the repost still shows on your profile feed.

There are many reasons why someone might want to delete a repost. You might have reposts content that no longer matches your current aesthetic or brand. Your interests may have changed since you first reposts the video. You could have reposts something by mistake or without fully considering whether it fits your account's overall direction. Some users delete reposts because they want to maintain a more curated feed that reflects only their original content. Others might delete reposts if the original creator removes their video, making your repost orphaned or broken. Performance concerns also matter—if a repost isn't getting engagement, you may want to remove it to keep your profile polished and focused.

According to TikTok's platform data, repost activity has grown significantly since the feature's introduction. While exact statistics on repost deletion rates aren't publicly available, engagement metrics show that reposts typically receive lower engagement than original content. Understanding the repost function and knowing how to manage your reposts helps you maintain control over your profile's appearance and the message you send to your followers.

Practical Takeaway: Before deleting a repost, consider whether you want to keep it for engagement purposes or if removing it will better represent your account's current direction. Taking time to review your reposts periodically helps maintain a cohesive profile.

Locating the Repost You Want to Delete

Finding a specific repost on your profile is the first step in the deletion process. Unlike original videos that you can locate easily in your main feed, reposts sometimes blend into your profile timeline, especially if you have a large number of posts. The most straightforward way to locate a repost is to visit your own TikTok profile by tapping the profile icon in the bottom right corner of the app. This takes you to your personal profile page, where all your content—including original videos and reposts—appears in reverse chronological order, with your newest posts at the top.

Scroll through your profile feed to find the repost you want to remove. Reposts are visually identifiable by a small banner or label at the top that shows the original creator's username and profile picture, often with text like "Reposts from @[original creator's username]." This label distinguishes reposts from your original content, making them easier to spot. If you're looking for a specific repost but can't remember when you posted it, scrolling backward through your profile until you locate it is necessary. For users with hundreds of posts, this can take time, so patience is important during this step.

Another way to locate reposts is through the TikTok search and discovery features. If you remember the original creator's name, you can search for their profile, find the original video, and see if you've reposts it. When viewing a video you've reposts, you can sometimes see your repost directly from the original video's comment or engagement section. However, the most reliable method remains visiting your own profile and scrolling through your posts manually to identify the reposts you want to delete.

Practical Takeaway: Keep your profile organized by periodically reviewing what you've reposts. Knowing what's on your profile makes it easier to make decisions about what to keep or remove in the future.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Deleting a Repost

Once you've found the repost you want to delete, the actual deletion process is straightforward. On your profile, locate the repost video and tap on it to open the full video view. At the bottom right corner of the video player, you'll see several icons including a heart (like button), a comment icon, a share icon, and a menu icon represented by three dots or lines (sometimes called a "more" button). Tap this three-dot menu icon to reveal additional options for managing this specific post.

After tapping the menu icon, a dropdown or pop-up menu will appear with several choices. Look for an option that says "Delete" or "Remove." On most versions of the TikTok app, this option appears near the bottom of the menu. Select the "Delete" option. TikTok may ask you to confirm your decision before permanently removing the repost, as a safeguard against accidental deletion. A confirmation message will typically appear asking something like "Are you sure you want to delete this video?" Confirm your choice by tapping "Delete" or "Yes" when prompted.

After confirmation, the repost will be removed from your profile immediately. The video will no longer appear in your profile feed, on your followers' "Following" feeds, or in any other visible location on TikTok. The original creator's version of the video remains unaffected—deleting your repost doesn't harm or remove the original content. Your follower count and the original creator's engagement metrics also remain unchanged. The entire process typically takes less than a minute and requires no special permissions or verification beyond confirming the deletion action.

Practical Takeaway: The deletion process is reversible in terms of re-posting the same content later, but once deleted, you cannot retrieve that specific repost. Make certain you want to delete it before confirming the action.

Troubleshooting Common Issues When Deleting Reposts

Sometimes users encounter problems or confusion when trying to delete a repost. One common issue is not being able to locate the delete option in the menu. This can happen if your TikTok app is outdated or if you're using an older version that has different menu options. If you don't see a delete option, try updating your TikTok app from your device's app store. App updates often include interface improvements and bug fixes that can resolve menu-related problems. Older versions of TikTok may have had different menu structures, so updating ensures you have access to current features.

Another frequent issue involves confusion between deleting a repost and hiding or archiving a post. TikTok offers different options for managing content—you can delete a post entirely, archive it privately, or make it visible only to specific people. If you want to completely remove a repost from your public profile, deletion is the correct choice. However, if you want to keep the video but make it private or less visible, TikTok's archive or visibility settings might be what you need instead. Review all available options in the menu before selecting delete to ensure you're choosing the right action for your situation.

Some users report that after deleting a repost, the video still appears on their profile for a short time. This is typically a caching issue where the app's temporary memory hasn't updated to reflect the deletion. Closing and reopening the TikTok app usually resolves this problem within minutes. If the repost continues to appear after refreshing the app or waiting several minutes, you might have an app glitch. In that case, try logging out of your TikTok account and logging back in. If problems persist, uninstalling and reinstalling the TikTok app can resolve persistent technical issues. Contact TikTok's help center through the app if problems continue after these troubleshooting steps.

Practical Takeaway: Most deletion issues resolve quickly by updating your app, refreshing the screen, or logging out and back in. Taking these simple steps first saves time before seeking additional support.

Managing Your Repost Activity for Better Profile Control

Beyond deleting individual reposts, understanding how to manage your overall repost activity helps you maintain a profile that truly represents your interests and content strategy. One approach is to set personal guidelines about when and what you repost. For example, some creators limit themselves to reposts that align with their niche or audience expectations. Others might decide to repost only content from creators they follow regularly or whose work they genuinely want to promote. Having these guidelines prevents accumulating reposts that don't fit your profile's overall theme or aesthetic.
