Understanding Dominion Energy Virginia's Customer Service Channels

Dominion Energy Virginia operates one of the largest electric utility networks on the East Coast, serving approximately 2.7 million customers across Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The company maintains multiple communication channels to help customers manage their accounts, report issues, and gather information about services. Each channel serves different purposes, and understanding which option works best for your specific need can save time and reduce frustration.

The primary phone number for Dominion Energy Virginia customer service is 1-866-DOMINION (1-866-366-4646). This line operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making it available for emergencies such as power outages or downed power lines, as well as routine account inquiries. The automated system routes calls based on the type of issue you're experiencing. For example, if you call during a widespread outage, you may hear an automated message confirming the outage and providing estimated restoration times before connecting to a representative.

Beyond phone support, Dominion Energy Virginia maintains an official website at dominionenergy.com where you can locate Virginia-specific information and resources. The website includes separate sections for residential customers, business customers, and those interested in rebate programs or energy efficiency information. The site features real-time outage maps that show current power outages in your area, updated every few minutes during widespread incidents.

The company also operates social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter where representatives respond to customer inquiries during business hours. These channels often provide quicker responses for non-urgent matters and can direct you to appropriate resources. Social media support typically operates Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

Practical takeaway: Before contacting Dominion Energy Virginia, determine whether your issue is urgent (outage, hazard) or routine (billing, account changes). Urgent matters always warrant a phone call to the 24-hour line, while non-urgent questions may be handled efficiently through the website, online chat, or social media during business hours.

Phone Support: What to Expect and How to Navigate It

When you call Dominion Energy Virginia's main customer service line at 1-866-366-4646, the call initially connects to an automated system designed to route your inquiry efficiently. The system uses voice recognition technology, meaning you can speak naturally when asked about your issue rather than navigating traditional touch-tone menus. The automated system can handle many routine requests without requiring a human representative, such as providing your current balance, setting up a payment, reporting an outage in your area, or scheduling a service appointment.

For customers who prefer not to use voice commands, the system does allow you to press numbers on your phone keypad at any time. Common options include pressing "1" for billing questions, "2" for service requests, "3" for outages and emergencies, and "0" to reach a live representative. Wait times for live representatives vary significantly based on call volume and time of day. During peak times such as Monday morning or immediately after a major storm, wait times may exceed 20 minutes. Calling early in the morning (before 9 a.m.) or during mid-afternoon typically results in shorter wait times.

When speaking with a representative, have your account number readily available. Your account number appears on your monthly bill and helps the representative locate your specific account quickly. If you don't have your account number, a representative can look up your account using your phone number and service address. Representatives can discuss billing questions, arrange payment plans, schedule service appointments, report problems with your meter or electrical connections, and provide information about programs offered by the company.

For power outages specifically, the phone system provides real-time information about outages affecting your address without requiring a representative. The system announces the estimated time power will be restored based on current restoration efforts. This information updates frequently during active outage events. If your area shows no outage in the system but you have no power, you may need to report it to a representative, as localized outages affecting only one or two customers sometimes require manual reporting.

Representatives handle requests in the order received, though outages and safety emergencies always take priority. If you experience an emergency such as a power line down in your yard or electrical fire, inform the representative immediately so your call is prioritized appropriately.

Practical takeaway: Prepare your account number before calling, expect varying wait times depending on time and day, and use the automated system for routine balance checks or outage reporting to avoid waiting for a representative when immediate connection isn't necessary.

Online Account Management and Digital Self-Service Tools

Dominion Energy Virginia's website offers a comprehensive online portal called "My Account" that allows customers to manage many aspects of their service without speaking to a representative. To use My Account, you must first register on the Dominion Energy website by providing your account number, email address, and creating a password. Registration takes approximately five minutes and grants you access to features available 24 hours daily from any internet-connected device.

Through My Account, you can view your current bill before it arrives in the mail, typically two to three days after generation. The portal displays your usage patterns broken down by day, showing how much electricity you consumed and what portion of your bill was for supply, delivery, and taxes. This detailed breakdown helps identify whether usage increased due to seasonal factors or behavioral changes. You can also compare your current month's usage to the same month last year, providing context for unexpected bill increases.

Payment options through the online portal include one-time payments using a debit card, credit card, or electronic bank transfer. The portal also allows you to set up recurring automatic payments, which many customers use to ensure they never miss a due date. If you choose automatic payment, you can specify the payment date within the billing cycle, such as always paying on the 20th of each month. The online system processes most payments the same business day if submitted before 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

The portal includes an "Outage Map" feature that shows current power outages affecting your service area, updated every few minutes. The map displays the number of customers without power in your neighborhood, the cause of the outage when known, and the estimated restoration time based on field conditions. You can also register for outage alerts that notify you by text, email, or phone call when an outage is detected at your address and when power is restored.

Additional features in My Account include setting up service requests for routine maintenance calls, viewing your service history, and managing communication preferences such as how you receive your bill (paper or electronic). The "Energy Efficiency" section within the portal provides customized recommendations based on your usage patterns and suggests rebate programs that may benefit your situation.

Practical takeaway: Register for My Account during non-emergency times to familiarize yourself with features before you need them urgently. Setting up automatic payments and outage alerts through the portal reduces the need for future contact with customer service.

Reporting Outages, Emergencies, and Safety Hazards

Power outages affect entire neighborhoods or just individual homes depending on where the problem occurs in the electrical distribution system. Dominion Energy Virginia distinguishes between different types of outages to direct response efforts appropriately. A widespread outage affecting multiple streets or neighborhoods typically indicates a problem on the main distribution line, while an outage affecting only one or two houses may point to a problem at that specific location's connection point.

To report an outage, call 1-866-366-4646 and select the outage reporting option in the automated system. Provide your service address, and the system immediately checks whether an outage has been reported in your area. If an outage already appears in the system, you'll receive the current estimated restoration time. If no outage appears, the system prompts you to confirm you have no power and records your report. For outages affecting multiple customers, Dominion Energy Virginia dispatches repair crews based on the number of customers affected and the nature of the problem, prioritizing restoration to the largest groups first.

Safety hazards related to electrical service require immediate reporting and should never wait for business hours or standard procedures. Downed power lines, damaged poles, or wires sagging into trees pose serious electrocution and fire risks. If you observe these hazards, call 1-866-366-4646 and immediately inform the representative this is a safety emergency. The call center flags these reports as emergency priority, and field crews respond without delay. If there is immediate danger of injury, call 911 first, as police or fire departments may need to secure the area before utility crews arrive.
