Find Your PC's IP Address in Windows

What Is an IP Address and Why You Might Need It

An IP address is a unique number that identifies your computer on a network. Think of it like a mailing address for your device—it tells other computers and servers where to send information so it reaches your machine. IP stands for "Internet Protocol," and every device connected to the internet or a local network has one.

There are two main types of IP addresses you'll encounter. A public IP address is assigned by your internet service provider (ISP) and identifies your entire home or office network to the outside internet. This is the address that websites and online services see when you visit them. A private IP address, also called a local IP address, is assigned by your router and identifies your specific computer within your home or office network. Multiple devices in your home each have their own private IP address, but they all share one public IP address when communicating with the internet.

You might need to find your IP address for several practical reasons. If you're troubleshooting network connection problems, technical support specialists often ask for your IP address to diagnose issues. If you're setting up remote access to your computer, you'll need the local IP address. Gamers sometimes need their IP address to set up multiplayer connections or port forwarding on their router. Network administrators managing multiple computers need to track which device is which. If you're having internet speed problems, your ISP may ask for your public IP address to investigate.

Windows computers display IP address information in several places, and the method you choose depends on what you're trying to accomplish and how comfortable you are with different parts of the system. Whether you need your public IP or private IP address, Windows provides multiple straightforward ways to locate this information.

Practical takeaway: Understanding the difference between public and private IP addresses helps you know which one to provide when troubleshooting or setting up network features. Most home users need their private (local) IP address for home network tasks and their public IP address for checking how the internet sees their connection.

Finding Your Private IP Address Through Network Settings

The Network Settings app in Windows 10 and Windows 11 provides a modern, user-friendly way to locate your private IP address. This method works well for users who prefer graphical interfaces over command-line tools. Your private IP address is the one assigned to your specific computer by your router, typically starting with 192.168, 10.0, or 172.16.

To find your private IP address through Network Settings, first open the Settings app by pressing the Windows key plus the letter I simultaneously, or by clicking the Start button and typing "Settings." Once Settings opens, look for "Network & Internet" in the left sidebar and click it. This section shows all your network connections. Next, click on "Wi-Fi" if you're using wireless internet, or "Ethernet" if you're using a wired connection. A status page appears showing your connection details.

On the Wi-Fi or Ethernet details page, scroll down until you see "Properties" or a button labeled "View your network properties." Click this option. A new window opens displaying detailed network information. Look for the entry labeled "IPv4 address"—this is your private IP address. You'll also see other information here like your subnet mask, default gateway (which is usually your router's address), and DNS servers. Write down or take a screenshot of your IPv4 address if you need it for reference.

This method is reliable because it shows you the exact address your computer is currently using on your local network. The information updates in real-time, so if your router assigns you a different address later, you can return to this screen to see the new one. Most home routers use dynamic IP assignment, meaning your private IP address may change occasionally, though it often stays the same for extended periods if your computer stays connected.

Practical takeaway: The Network Settings method is best for users who want a clear visual display and don't want to use technical command-line tools. This approach takes about 30 seconds once you know where to look, and the information is presented in an easy-to-understand format.

Using the Command Prompt to Locate Your IP Address

The Command Prompt is a text-based tool in Windows that can quickly display your IP address and other network information. This method is faster than navigating through menus if you know the right command to type. Many IT professionals and technical support staff use this approach because it's quick and provides detailed network data in one view.

To open Command Prompt, click the Start button and type "cmd" or "command prompt." The Command Prompt application appears in the search results—click it to open a black window with white text. Alternatively, you can press Windows key plus R to open the Run dialog, type "cmd," and press Enter. Once Command Prompt is open, type the command "ipconfig" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter. The screen immediately displays your network configuration.

When you run the ipconfig command, you'll see information for each network adapter on your computer. Look for the section labeled with your connection type—either "Wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi" or "Ethernet adapter Ethernet." Under that section, find the line that says "IPv4 Address" followed by a series of numbers separated by periods, like 192.168.1.105. This is your private IP address. The display also shows your subnet mask and default gateway address.

If you want more detailed information, you can type "ipconfig /all" instead of just "ipconfig." This extended command shows additional details about your network setup, including your physical MAC address (a unique identifier for your network card), DHCP server information, and DNS settings. The /all version is particularly useful if you're troubleshooting network problems or need to provide technical support with comprehensive information about your system.

Command Prompt displays information instantly without waiting for windows to load or pages to refresh. You can copy the text from the Command Prompt window by right-clicking, selecting "Select All," then right-clicking again and choosing "Copy" to paste the information elsewhere if you need to save it or share it with technical support.

Practical takeaway: The Command Prompt method is the fastest way to view your IP address if you're comfortable typing commands. The "ipconfig" command provides immediate results and is the preferred method for technical professionals and IT support specialists.

Finding Your Public IP Address Through Your Browser

Your public IP address is what websites see when you connect to the internet. This is the address assigned by your internet service provider to your home or office connection. Unlike your private IP address, which only your local network devices can see, your public IP address is visible to every website you visit. Finding your public IP address requires checking with an external service because your computer itself doesn't directly display this information to you.

The simplest method to find your public IP address is to visit a website that displays it. Open your web browser—whether you use Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or another browser—and navigate to a website designed to show your public IP. Popular options include whatismyipaddress.com, myip.com, or simply searching "what is my IP" in any search engine. Within seconds, the website displays a large number on the screen—that's your public IP address. Most of these sites also show additional information like your approximate geographic location (based on the IP address), your internet service provider, and sometimes your connection type.

Why would you need your public IP address? If you're setting up remote access to your home computer from outside your network, you need your public IP address to connect. If your ISP is investigating connection problems, they may ask for your public IP to look up your account. Some online multiplayer games use public IP addresses for connection purposes. Additionally, if you're experiencing issues with online services blocking your access, knowing your public IP helps you understand how services see your connection.

One important note: your public IP address may change periodically. Most ISPs use dynamic IP assignment, meaning the address they assign to your connection can change when you restart your modem or on a regular schedule set by your ISP. If you need a permanent public IP address for a specific purpose like hosting a website or running a server, you would need to contact your ISP about obtaining a static IP address, which typically involves an additional fee.

Practical takeaway: Finding your public IP address takes less than a minute using any search engine or dedicated IP lookup website. This method works from any device with internet access and shows you how the outside internet sees your connection.
