Learn About Blood Sugar Levels After 70

Understanding Blood Sugar and Why It Matters After Age 70

Blood sugar, also called glucose, is the main type of sugar found in your blood. Your body uses glucose as fuel for energy, much like how a car uses gasoline. When you eat food, your digestive system breaks it down into glucose, which enters your bloodstream. Your pancreas responds by releasing a hormone called insulin, which acts like a key that allows glucose to enter your cells where it's used for energy.

As you age, your body's ability to manage blood sugar changes. After age 70, these changes become more noticeable for several reasons. Your cells may become less sensitive to insulin, meaning the insulin doesn't work as well as it once did. Your pancreas might also produce less insulin or release it more slowly. Additionally, older adults often have less physical activity and muscle mass, both of which affect how your body processes glucose.

Understanding your blood sugar levels becomes increasingly important in your 70s because high blood sugar levels can contribute to serious health conditions over time. These include heart disease, kidney damage, vision problems, and nerve damage. However, blood sugar that drops too low can also cause immediate problems like dizziness, confusion, or fainting.

The good news is that knowing what normal blood sugar ranges look like and how your body responds to different foods and activities gives you valuable information to discuss with your doctor. This knowledge helps you make informed choices about diet, exercise, and medication if prescribed.

Practical Takeaway: Keep a simple log for one week noting the times you eat, what you eat, and how you feel. Share this with your healthcare provider to discuss whether blood sugar monitoring would be helpful for you.

Normal Blood Sugar Ranges and What Your Numbers Mean

Blood sugar is measured in milligrams of glucose per deciliter of blood, written as mg/dL. Understanding the ranges helps you and your doctor determine if your levels are in a healthy zone. For people without diabetes, a fasting blood sugar level (measured after not eating for at least 8 hours) should typically be below 100 mg/dL. A fasting level between 100 and 125 mg/dL may indicate prediabetes, while 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate tests can indicate diabetes.

Two hours after eating a meal, a normal blood sugar level for someone without diabetes is typically below 140 mg/dL. This is called a postprandial reading. As you age, your body takes longer to return to normal levels after eating, so this postprandial period becomes more important to understand. Some older adults may see their levels stay elevated for three or more hours after a meal, whereas younger people might return to normal within two hours.

Another important measurement is hemoglobin A1C, sometimes written as HbA1c. This test shows your average blood sugar level over the past two to three months. Unlike a single blood sugar reading that shows just one moment in time, the A1C gives a broader picture. A normal A1C is below 5.7%. Between 5.7% and 6.4% is considered prediabetes range, while 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes. For adults over 70 with existing health conditions, your doctor might recommend a slightly higher target A1C range.

It's important to note that individual targets may vary based on your specific health situation. Someone who is very active and healthy at 75 might have different targets than someone with multiple chronic conditions. Your healthcare provider can explain what numbers are realistic and healthy for your particular circumstances.

Practical Takeaway: Ask your doctor what your current blood sugar numbers are and what ranges they recommend for you. Request these results in writing so you have them for your records.

How Blood Sugar Changes as You Age After 70

Several biological changes happen in your body after age 70 that directly affect blood sugar management. Your muscle mass naturally decreases with age—a process called sarcopenia. Since muscles are one of the main places where your body stores and uses glucose, having less muscle means your body uses less glucose overall. This can actually make blood sugar management trickier because your body doesn't clear glucose from your bloodstream as efficiently.

Your kidneys also change with age. Younger kidneys filter waste products, including excess glucose, very effectively. After 70, your kidney function typically declines, even if you don't have kidney disease. This means your body may retain more glucose in the bloodstream for longer periods. Additionally, your liver's ability to regulate glucose production changes. The liver normally stores glucose and releases it between meals to keep your blood sugar stable. As you age, this regulation becomes less precise.

Hormonal changes contribute significantly to blood sugar shifts in your 70s. Levels of hormones that help regulate blood sugar, like growth hormone, naturally decline. At the same time, stress hormones like cortisol may increase, especially if you're dealing with chronic stress or sleep problems. Many people over 70 experience changes in sleep patterns, and poor sleep directly affects how your body manages glucose.

Medications commonly taken by people in their 70s can also affect blood sugar. Medications for high blood pressure, depression, or inflammation might raise blood sugar levels as a side effect. Some older adults take five or more medications, and the combination can have unpredictable effects on glucose management. This is why it's valuable to review all medications with your doctor and discuss which ones might be affecting your blood sugar.

Practical Takeaway: Write down all medications you take, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements. Bring this list to your next doctor visit and ask specifically which ones might affect your blood sugar levels.

Foods That Affect Blood Sugar and Smart Eating Patterns

Different foods affect your blood sugar in different ways. Carbohydrates have the biggest impact on blood sugar levels because your body breaks them down into glucose. However, not all carbohydrates act the same way. Simple carbohydrates like white bread, sugary drinks, and desserts break down quickly, causing blood sugar to spike rapidly. Complex carbohydrates like whole grains, vegetables, and legumes break down more slowly, causing a gradual and gentler rise in blood sugar.

The concept of fiber is particularly important for people over 70. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that your body cannot digest, so it passes through your digestive system mostly unchanged. Because your body doesn't break down fiber into glucose, foods high in fiber don't cause blood sugar spikes the way other carbohydrates do. Fiber also helps you feel full longer, which can prevent overeating. Good fiber sources include vegetables, fruits with the skin on, whole grain bread, beans, lentils, and oatmeal. Aiming for 25 to 30 grams of fiber daily is a reasonable goal.

Protein and fat affect blood sugar differently than carbohydrates. When you eat protein, your body breaks it down into amino acids, which don't directly raise blood sugar the way glucose does. Eating protein with carbohydrates actually slows down how fast your body absorbs those carbohydrates, resulting in a more gradual blood sugar rise. Fat also slows carbohydrate absorption. This is why eating a piece of whole grain toast with eggs and avocado causes a smaller blood sugar rise than eating the toast alone with jam. Healthy protein sources include fish, chicken, beans, nuts, Greek yogurt, and eggs.

Portion sizes matter significantly for blood sugar management, especially as you age and your body becomes less efficient at clearing glucose. A palm-sized portion of protein, a fist-sized portion of carbohydrates, and a thumb-sized portion of fat at each meal is a practical guideline many people find helpful. Eating meals at consistent times also helps your body maintain more stable blood sugar throughout the day, rather than having large fluctuations.

Practical Takeaway: For three days, write down what you eat at each meal along with any blood sugar symptoms you notice (energy levels, hunger, mood). Look for patterns showing which foods make you feel best.

Physical Activity and Exercise for Blood Sugar Management

Physical activity is one of the most powerful tools for managing blood sugar, particularly as you age. When you exercise, your muscles use glucose for energy without needing as much insulin. This means exercise naturally lowers blood sugar levels. Even light activity like walking helps. Studies show that a 15-minute walk after eating a meal can reduce blood sugar spikes by 20 to 30 percent in some people.
