Learn How to Change File Types on Windows and Mac

Understanding File Types and Extensions on Your Computer

A file type refers to the format in which data is stored on your computer. Every file on your device has a file extension—a short code at the end of the filename that tells your operating system what kind of file it is and which program should open it. For example, a file named "document.docx" has the extension ".docx," which indicates it's a Microsoft Word document. The extension appears after the final period in the filename.

File extensions serve as a communication system between your computer and the programs installed on it. When you double-click a file, your operating system reads the extension and looks for a default program associated with that type. If you have Microsoft Word installed, clicking a .docx file opens it in Word. If you have Adobe Reader installed, clicking a .pdf file opens it with that program.

Common file extensions include .txt for plain text, .jpg for images, .mp3 for audio, .mp4 for video, and .xlsx for spreadsheets. Understanding these extensions helps you work more effectively with your files and troubleshoot when files won't open correctly. Different programs can often open the same file type—for instance, both Google Docs and Microsoft Word can open .docx files—though the appearance or features available may vary slightly.

On Windows computers, file extensions may be hidden by default, which means you might see "document" instead of "document.docx" in your file explorer. On Mac computers, extensions are often hidden as well. Learning to show these extensions and understanding what they mean gives you more control over your files and makes it easier to convert between formats when needed.

Takeaway: File extensions are the three or four-letter codes at the end of filenames that identify what type of file it is. Recognizing common extensions helps you understand which program should open a file and when conversion might be necessary.

How to Show File Extensions on Windows

By default, Windows hides file extensions from view in File Explorer. While this can make filenames look cleaner, it prevents you from seeing what format your files are actually in. Showing extensions is the first step toward understanding and changing file types on your Windows computer.

To reveal file extensions in Windows 10 or Windows 11, open File Explorer by pressing the Windows key and E simultaneously, or by clicking the folder icon on your taskbar. Once File Explorer is open, look at the top menu. Click on the "View" tab. You'll see several options displayed in a ribbon. Look for a checkbox labeled "File name extensions" and click it to enable it. After you click this option, all files in File Explorer will display their extensions.

If you're using an older version of Windows, the steps are similar but the menu location may differ slightly. In Windows 7, open File Explorer, click "Organize" in the top-left corner, select "Folder and search options," click the "View" tab, and uncheck the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types." In Windows Vista, follow similar steps through the Tools menu.

Once you've enabled file extensions, you'll notice them appearing on all your files. You can now see exactly what format each file is in. This visibility is crucial when you want to change a file's type. You can now proceed to rename files by changing their extensions, though simply changing the extension doesn't always fully convert the file—some methods require using specific software or online tools to actually convert the file content to the new format.

Takeaway: Access File Extensions through View menu in File Explorer on Windows, then check the "File name extensions" box. This reveals the format code for every file on your computer.

How to Show File Extensions on Mac

Apple computers also hide file extensions by default, though the process for revealing them differs from Windows. On a Mac, showing extensions provides the same benefit: you can see exactly what format your files are in and understand when conversion might be needed. The steps are straightforward and take only a few moments.

To show file extensions on a Mac, open the Finder application by clicking the Finder icon in your dock or pressing Command and Space to open Spotlight search, then type "Finder." Once Finder is open, click on "Finder" in the menu bar at the very top of your screen. A dropdown menu will appear. Select "Preferences" from this menu. A preferences window will open. Click on the "Advanced" tab at the top of the preferences window. You'll see several checkboxes. Look for the option that says "Show all filename extensions" and click the checkbox next to it. Close the preferences window, and extensions will now be visible on all your files in Finder.

After enabling this setting, every file in Finder will display its extension. You'll see "photo.jpg" instead of just "photo," and "spreadsheet.xlsx" instead of just "spreadsheet." This setting applies system-wide, so extensions will appear whether you're looking at files on your desktop, in Downloads, or in any folder. Some older Mac files created before macOS adopted extensions might still display without them, but all modern files will show their extensions once this setting is enabled.

If you ever want to hide extensions again, you can return to the same Finder Preferences window and uncheck the "Show all filename extensions" option. Many users find it helpful to keep extensions visible permanently so they always know what format their files are in.

Takeaway: On Mac, open Finder Preferences, navigate to Advanced, and check "Show all filename extensions" to reveal file formats on all your files.

Changing File Extensions Through Renaming

The most straightforward method to change a file's extension is through renaming. This works by simply editing the filename to replace the old extension with a new one. However, it's important to understand that changing the extension alone doesn't convert the actual file content—it only changes how your computer identifies the file. In many cases, this approach works when you're changing between closely related formats or when you want to force a file to open in a different program.

To rename a file and change its extension on Windows, right-click the file you want to modify. A context menu will appear. Select "Rename" from this menu. The filename will become editable, with the text highlighted. You can now type a new name or modify the existing name. To change only the extension, click at the end of the filename to position your cursor just before the period and extension. Delete the existing extension and type the new one. For example, change "image.bmp" to "image.jpg." Press Enter to confirm the change.

On a Mac, the process is similar. Click the file once to select it, then press Enter or Return key. Alternatively, you can right-click and select "Rename" from the menu. The filename becomes editable. Navigate to the extension portion and replace it with the new format code. Press Enter to confirm.

When you change an extension this way, your computer will ask for confirmation, sometimes warning you that changing the extension might make the file unusable. This warning appears because simply renaming the file doesn't actually convert its contents. The file's internal structure remains unchanged. This method works well when converting between formats that are very similar or when you want to try opening a file in a different program. However, for true file conversion between very different formats—such as converting a Word document to PDF or a bitmap image to PNG—you typically need to use specific software or conversion tools rather than just renaming.

Takeaway: Right-click a file, select Rename, and change the extension at the end. This works for similar formats but may not truly convert file content for very different format types.

Converting Files Using Built-in Software Programs

Both Windows and Mac computers come with software that can convert files between common formats. These built-in programs offer a straightforward approach to file conversion without needing to install additional software or use online tools. The specific programs available depend on your operating system and what you're trying to convert.

On Windows, several built-in programs can handle conversions. Paint, which comes standard with Windows, can open and save image files in multiple formats. To convert an image using Paint, right-click the image file, select "Open with," and choose "Paint" from the list. Once the image opens in Paint, click "File" in the menu, then "Save as." A dialog box will appear where you can choose a new filename and, more importantly, select a different file format from the "Save as type" dropdown menu. Common options include .jpg, .png, .bmp, and .
