Learn How to Add Apple Gift Cards
Understanding Apple Gift Cards and How They Work
Apple Gift Cards are prepaid cards that let you purchase items from Apple's ecosystem of services and products. When you add an Apple Gift Card to your account, you're essentially loading money that you can spend on apps, games, music, movies, TV shows, books, and subscriptions through the Apple ecosystem. Understanding how these cards function is the foundation for managing them effectively.

Apple Gift Cards come in two main types: physical cards that you can hold in your hand, and digital cards that arrive via email. Physical cards are often sold at retail locations like Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and grocery stores. Digital cards are purchased online and delivered almost immediately to your email address. Both types work identically once they're added to your account—the card type simply determines how you receive the code.
The value on an Apple Gift Card doesn't expire, which means you can use it whenever you choose. Apple allows you to purchase cards in various denominations, typically ranging from $10 to $500, though specific amounts may vary by retailer. Once you redeem a card by adding it to your Apple ID account, the balance becomes part of your overall account credit, which you can then use for purchases.
When you make purchases using your Apple Gift Card balance, the cost is deducted from your card's value automatically. If your purchase exceeds your card balance, you'll need to provide an additional payment method for the difference. This system makes it straightforward to track your spending and manage multiple gift cards on a single account.
Practical Takeaway: Before adding a card, know that physical Apple Gift Cards are available at major retailers while digital versions come instantly via email. Both provide the same purchasing power once redeemed, and the money doesn't expire, giving you flexibility in when and how you use it.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Adding Apple Gift Cards on iPhone or iPad
Adding an Apple Gift Card to your device through the Wallet app is one of the most straightforward methods. The Wallet app, which comes pre-installed on iPhones and iPads, serves as a central location for managing digital passes and cards. To begin, open the Wallet app on your device and look for the plus icon or "Add" button, typically located in the upper right corner of the screen.

When you tap the add button, you'll see various options for adding content to your Wallet. Look for the option that mentions Apple Gift Card or gift cards specifically. Tap on this option to proceed. Your device will then prompt you to either scan a gift card code or enter the code manually. If you have a physical Apple Gift Card, you can use your device's camera to scan the code on the back of the card. The scanning process is quick and doesn't require any special settings or adjustments.
If scanning doesn't work or you prefer to enter the code manually, you can do so through the same interface. Physical Apple Gift Cards have a 16-digit code printed on the back. You'll enter this code into the designated field on your screen. Digital Apple Gift Cards arrive in your email with a code included—this code can be scanned or entered the same way as a physical card.
After scanning or entering the code, your device will validate the card and display the amount. The system will then add this balance to your Apple ID account automatically. Once complete, you'll see a confirmation message and the card's value will appear in your account balance. This entire process typically takes less than two minutes from start to finish.
Practical Takeaway: Use the Wallet app on your iPhone or iPad to add gift cards by scanning the back of the card or entering the 16-digit code manually. The process is quick, and once completed, your balance is immediately available for purchases through your Apple ID.
Redeeming Apple Gift Cards on Mac and Web Browsers
If you're using a Mac computer, you can add an Apple Gift Card through the App Store application or the Apple Music app, depending on what you're purchasing. Both applications have built-in options for redeeming gift cards. To begin on a Mac, open the App Store from your dock or Applications folder. In the top menu bar, you'll find options for your account and settings. Look for a section labeled "Account" or a profile icon that will open your account settings.

Within your account settings, you should see an option for "Redeem Gift Card or Code." Click on this option, and a window will appear asking you to enter your gift card code. You can either manually type the 16-digit code or, if your Mac has a camera, use it to photograph the back of the physical card for automatic scanning. The validation process is nearly identical to mobile devices, and your balance will be added to your account immediately upon successful entry.
For those who prefer using a web browser, you can visit the Apple Account website through any browser on any computer. Log in with your Apple ID credentials, then navigate to your account settings or payment information section. Look for an option that says "Redeem" or "Add Credit." This will open a form where you can enter your gift card code. The web method offers the same functionality as app-based methods and is useful if you're working on a computer without the App Store application installed.
Regardless of which method you choose—Mac app or web browser—the result is identical: your gift card balance is added to your Apple ID account and becomes available for use across all your connected devices. If you use multiple Apple devices, you only need to redeem a gift card once, and the balance will appear on all of them since they share the same Apple ID account.
Practical Takeaway: On Mac computers, use the App Store application to redeem gift cards, or visit the Apple Account website through any web browser to add your code. Both methods are equally reliable and add your balance instantly to your Apple ID.
Managing Multiple Gift Cards and Checking Your Balance
Many people receive or purchase multiple Apple Gift Cards over time, and managing them requires knowing where to find your total balance and how it accumulates. Your Apple ID account automatically combines all redeemed gift card balances into a single account credit, which simplifies tracking. Rather than monitoring individual cards, you'll see one total balance that represents all your available funds across the Apple ecosystem.

To check your current balance on an iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app and scroll until you find your name at the top of the screen. Tap on it to open your Apple ID settings, then select "Media & Purchases." You'll see an option that shows your account balance prominently. This same balance applies whether you're purchasing apps, subscribing to services, renting movies, or buying music—it's all drawn from the same account credit pool.
On a Mac, you can view your balance by opening the App Store, clicking on your account profile icon in the top right corner, and selecting "Account Settings." Your balance will be displayed in this section. On the web, log into your Apple ID account at appleid.apple.com, navigate to your account settings, and look for payment information or account credit to see your current balance.
If you need to track individual gift cards before redeeming them, you should record the codes and their values somewhere safe. Many people take screenshots of digital gift cards or write down physical card codes in a document or note-taking app. This provides a backup in case you lose a physical card or need to reference which cards you've already redeemed. Once redeemed, individual card codes become inactive and cannot be used again.
Understanding that your balance works like a prepaid account is important when making purchases. Some subscriptions renew automatically and draw from your account credit. If your balance is insufficient to cover a renewal charge, the system will prompt you to add another payment method rather than failing silently. Reviewing your balance periodically helps prevent unexpected payment issues.
Practical Takeaway: Check your combined account balance in Settings on iOS, the App Store on Mac, or your Apple ID website on any browser. Keep records of individual gift card codes before redeeming them, and monitor your balance if you have recurring subscriptions that draw from your account credit.
Troubleshooting Common Issues When Adding Gift Cards
Despite the straightforward process, you may encounter issues when attempting to add an Apple Gift Card. One of the most common problems is entering an incorrect code. Gift card codes are 16 digits long and are case-sensitive, though most systems convert them automatically. If you receive an error message stating the code is invalid, double-check that you've entered all 16 digits correctly. Pay special attention to characters that might look similar, such as the letter
