Learn How Credit Card Cash Advances Work

What Is a Credit Card Cash Advance?

A credit card cash advance is a way to borrow money directly from your credit card issuer, similar to withdrawing cash from an ATM. Instead of using your card to purchase goods or services, you're accessing a portion of your available credit as actual cash. This cash goes directly into your hands or your bank account, giving you liquidity when you need it.

When you take a cash advance, you're not using a rewards-earning purchase. Rather, you're borrowing money that you'll need to repay with interest and fees. The amount you can withdraw is limited by your cash advance limit, which is typically lower than your overall credit limit. For example, if you have a $5,000 credit limit, your cash advance limit might be $1,500 or $2,000.

Cash advances differ from regular credit card purchases in several important ways. With a standard purchase, the money goes to a merchant, and you receive goods or services. With a cash advance, you receive the money itself. Additionally, cash advances often come with higher fees and interest rates than regular purchases. According to data from the Federal Reserve, average cash advance interest rates range from 20% to 35%, which is substantially higher than the average purchase APR of around 18%.

You can obtain a cash advance through several methods: ATM withdrawals using your credit card, over-the-counter withdrawals at a bank branch, or balance transfer checks mailed by your card issuer. Each method works slightly differently, but all involve borrowing against your credit line rather than using money you already have.

Practical Takeaway: Understand that a cash advance is a short-term loan from your card issuer, not a purchase. It comes with higher costs and different terms than regular card usage, so reserve it for genuine emergencies rather than routine expenses.

Fees and Interest Rates Associated With Cash Advances

Cash advances typically involve multiple costs that make them expensive compared to regular credit card purchases. The first cost is the cash advance fee, which is charged upfront when you withdraw the money. This fee is usually calculated as a percentage of the amount withdrawn, typically ranging from 3% to 5%. For a $500 cash advance, you might pay $15 to $25 just to get the money out.

Beyond the upfront fee, cash advances accrue interest at a higher rate than purchases. While a regular purchase might carry an APR of 15% to 20%, a cash advance APR often ranges from 20% to 35%. This higher rate reflects the lender's view of cash advances as riskier borrowing. Critically, interest on cash advances begins accumulating immediately—there is typically no grace period. With a regular purchase, you might have 20 to 30 days before interest kicks in. With a cash advance, interest starts the day you withdraw the money.

Let's examine a concrete example. Suppose you withdraw $1,000 as a cash advance with a 4% fee and a 25% APR. You'd pay $40 upfront as a fee. If you repay the entire amount within 30 days, you'd pay approximately $21 in interest. Your total cost would be roughly $61. However, if you carry that balance for six months, the interest alone would total around $125, making your total cost $165 for borrowing $1,000.

Some cards offer promotional rates on balance transfers but not on cash advances. Cash advances almost never include promotional 0% APR periods. Additionally, when you make a payment to your card, the money is typically applied first to purchases (especially those with promotional rates), then to balance transfers, and finally to cash advances. This means your cash advance balance may linger longer, accumulating more interest.

Practical Takeaway: Factor in both the upfront cash advance fee and the high interest rate when deciding whether a cash advance makes sense. Calculate the total cost of borrowing and explore other funding options that might be cheaper, such as personal loans or asking for a line of credit increase.

How Cash Advances Affect Your Credit Score

Taking a cash advance can influence your credit score through several mechanisms. Your credit utilization ratio—the amount of available credit you're using—is a major factor in credit score calculations, typically accounting for 30% of your score. When you take a cash advance, you're increasing this ratio. If you have a $5,000 credit limit and take a $1,500 cash advance, you've just used 30% of your available credit, which can negatively impact your score.

The impact is typically temporary if you repay the advance quickly. However, if you carry the cash advance balance for an extended period, your utilization remains high, and your score may drop noticeably. Credit bureaus often report utilization levels on a monthly basis, so even if you plan to repay the advance, the damage may be visible during the months you're carrying the balance.

Cash advances don't directly appear differently on your credit report compared to regular purchases. Both show up as part of your revolving credit account activity. However, the higher balance and longer repayment timeline can affect your creditworthiness. Lenders reviewing your credit report will see that you're carrying a larger balance, which may make you appear riskier when you apply for new credit.

There's another consideration: cash advances may indicate financial stress to lenders. While this doesn't directly affect your credit score algorithm, it can influence how lenders view your application for new credit. Banks and credit card companies often note that frequent cash advances suggest someone is short on cash, which increases perceived default risk.

The timeline for recovery matters as well. If you repay the cash advance within one or two billing cycles, the impact on your credit score is usually minimal and temporary. Your score should recover once your utilization drops. However, if you carry the balance for months, the negative impact will persist and may compound if other negative factors appear on your report.

Practical Takeaway: Minimize the damage to your credit score by repaying your cash advance as quickly as possible. Keeping the balance short-term reduces utilization and demonstrates responsible borrowing behavior to credit bureaus.

Common Reasons People Use Cash Advances

People turn to cash advances for various reasons, though financial experts generally recommend treating them as a last resort. One common scenario involves unexpected expenses that require immediate cash. Someone might face a car repair, medical bill, or home emergency that can't wait for a paycheck. In these situations, a cash advance provides quick access to funds when other options aren't immediately available.

Another reason involves situations where specific vendors don't accept credit cards. Some small businesses, independent contractors, or informal transactions require cash payment. A plumber might demand cash for their services, or you might need cash for a private sale. In these cases, a cash advance allows you to convert your credit into the required currency.

Traveling internationally sometimes necessitates cash advances. While credit cards are increasingly accepted worldwide, some countries still rely heavily on cash for transactions. Travelers might use cash advances to obtain local currency without relying on airport exchange rates, which are typically unfavorable. However, many travelers' cards now offer better rates than cash advances, making this reason less compelling than it once was.

Some people use cash advances for bill payment during financial emergencies. If faced with late utility bills or rent, a cash advance can bridge a gap until income arrives. This is particularly common during periods of job transition or when paychecks are delayed. However, this approach is risky because the high interest charges can make the financial situation worse in the long term.

Gambling and cash advances have a complicated relationship. Some individuals use cash advances to fund gambling activities, which creates a particularly dangerous cycle of debt. Financial counselors consistently warn against using cash advances for discretionary spending that involves financial risk.

Practical Takeaway: Examine whether your cash advance reason is truly an emergency or whether alternatives exist. If the expense can wait or can be paid another way, explore those options first. Reserve cash advances for genuine emergencies where delaying payment would cause serious hardship.

Strategic Alternatives to Cash Advances

Before taking a cash advance, consider several alternatives that may offer lower costs. A personal loan from a bank or credit union typically carries a lower interest rate than a cash advance—often ranging from 6% to 36% depending on your creditworthiness. Personal loans also have fixed repayment terms, making it easier to budget. If you have decent credit, a personal loan might cost significantly less than
