Learn About the Continental Divide Trail Route

Overview of the Continental Divide Trail

The Continental Divide Trail (CDT) is one of the three major long-distance hiking trails in the United States, stretching approximately 3,100 miles from the Canadian border in Montana to the Mexican border in New Mexico. The trail follows the Continental Divide, an imaginary line that separates water drainage systems across North America. Water that falls on the western side of the divide flows toward the Pacific Ocean, while water on the eastern side flows toward the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.

The CDT was officially established as a National Scenic Trail in 1978, though many sections have been used by hikers, Native Americans, and explorers for centuries. Unlike some other long-distance trails, the CDT is less developed and marked than its counterparts—the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail. This characteristic makes the CDT appealing to experienced backpackers seeking solitude and a more remote wilderness experience. The trail passes through some of North America's most stunning landscapes, including the Rocky Mountains, vast high plateaus, and pristine mountain valleys.

The Continental Divide Trail Alliance, a nonprofit organization, works to maintain and improve the trail. According to the alliance, the CDT reaches elevations as high as 13,271 feet and passes through regions with significant wildlife populations. The trail crosses through or near 25 wilderness areas and multiple national forests and parks.

Practical Takeaway: Understanding that the CDT is a lengthy, remote trail requiring significant backpacking experience helps hikers determine if this route matches their skill level and interests compared to other long-distance trails.

Geography and Route Sections

The Continental Divide Trail can be divided into three major geographic sections, each with distinct terrain, climate, and challenges. The Northern Section runs from the Canadian border near the North Fork of the Flathead River in Montana to the Wyoming-Colorado border, covering approximately 1,100 miles. This section passes through Montana and portions of Idaho and Wyoming, featuring high mountain passes, glacial valleys, and extensive wilderness areas. The Northern Section includes the challenging Mission Mountains and the Anaconda Range.

The Middle Section extends from northern Colorado through New Mexico to the Mexican border, covering roughly 2,000 miles. This section includes some of the trail's highest elevations and most challenging terrain. Hikers in the Middle Section encounter the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, which are known for steep grades and high passes. The section also passes through New Mexico's dramatic landscapes, including volcanic plateaus and desert terrain. The elevation in this section can range from 5,000 feet to over 13,000 feet.

The Southern Section, primarily in New Mexico, features lower elevations and warmer temperatures compared to northern sections. However, this region presents different challenges, including sparse water sources, desert conditions, and volcanic terrain. Many hikers find the Southern Section more physically demanding due to heat and dehydration risks rather than extreme altitude.

The CDT crosses through multiple state and federal lands, including national forests such as the Flathead, Shoshone, and Gila national forests. The trail also passes near Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and Rocky Mountain National Park, though it doesn't always pass directly through these protected areas.

Practical Takeaway: Learning about each section's specific geography, elevation changes, and terrain characteristics allows hikers to plan training, select appropriate equipment, and understand the varying demands of different portions of the trail.

Trail Difficulty and Physical Requirements

The Continental Divide Trail is widely considered one of the most challenging long-distance hiking trails in North America. Unlike the Appalachian Trail or Pacific Crest Trail, which have established and well-maintained tread in most locations, significant portions of the CDT require route-finding skills and navigation ability. Hikers must often use topographic maps, GPS devices, or detailed guidebooks to locate the correct path, particularly in remote areas where the trail is not heavily marked.

Elevation gain and loss across the entire trail is substantial. Hikers regularly encounter climbs of 2,000 to 3,000 feet in a single day, particularly in Colorado and New Mexico. The high elevations mean hikers must acclimatize to thinner air. Many sections of the trail remain above 10,000 feet, and some passes exceed 12,000 feet. Hikers not accustomed to high elevation may experience altitude sickness, characterized by headaches, nausea, and fatigue.

Weather conditions present significant challenges, particularly in the Northern and Middle Sections. Snow can occur even in summer months at high elevations. Thunderstorms are common on summer afternoons in the mountains, creating risks from lightning at exposed high-elevation locations. Winter conditions in Montana and Wyoming can make the CDT impassable for much of the year, typically from October through June in northern sections.

The remote nature of the CDT means hikers may encounter limited access to resupply opportunities. Water sources may be scarce or unreliable in certain sections, particularly in New Mexico and portions of Wyoming. Hikers must plan carefully to ensure adequate water capacity and know where reliable water sources exist along the route.

Experience with backpacking for extended periods is essential. Thru-hiking the entire CDT typically requires 4 to 5 months of continuous hiking. Most successful CDT hikers have completed other long-distance trails or have substantial backpacking experience.

Practical Takeaway: Realistically assessing your physical fitness, navigation skills, and wilderness experience before attempting the CDT prevents potentially dangerous situations and allows you to choose appropriate sections or trails that match your actual abilities.

Seasonal Considerations and Best Timing

Timing a CDT hike requires careful consideration of regional weather patterns and trail conditions. The hiking window varies significantly based on which section of the trail a hiker targets. For the Northern Section in Montana and Idaho, the optimal hiking season typically runs from mid-June through September. Snow may remain on high passes into July in some years. Beginning the Northern Section too early risks encountering dangerous snow and stream crossings swollen with snowmelt.

The Middle Section from Colorado through New Mexico can be hiked from late May through October, though timing depends on snow conditions in the Southern Rocky Mountains. Many hikers traveling south to north start in New Mexico in March or April to take advantage of the longer Southern Section window, then move north as the season progresses and snow melts at higher elevations.

The Southern Section offers the most flexible timing, with potential hiking opportunities from March through November. However, summer heat in New Mexico creates water scarcity challenges. Spring and fall are often preferred for this section because temperatures are moderate and some water becomes more available from spring rains.

Weather patterns significantly affect trail safety. Afternoon thunderstorms are nearly universal on the CDT during summer months, particularly in Colorado. Hikers should plan to reach high passes and exposed ridges before early afternoon to minimize lightning risk. Winter conditions return quickly in fall—some sections receive snow in September and early October.

Water availability varies seasonally. Spring snowmelt creates abundant water in many areas but also creates dangerous stream crossings with heavy runoff. By mid-summer, certain water sources may dry up completely. Fall typically offers more reliable water conditions in most sections.

Most CDT thru-hikers attempt the full trail from south to north starting in March or April, or from north to south starting in June or July. These timing patterns align with natural snow melt patterns and allow hikers to progress northward as summer advances.

Practical Takeaway: Planning your CDT hike around seasonal conditions, snow melt patterns, and water availability significantly increases your chances of completing the trail safely and reduces encounters with extreme weather or dangerous trail conditions.

Equipment, Gear, and Navigation Requirements

Hiking the Continental Divide Trail requires careful attention to gear selection because of the remote nature of the route and variable weather conditions. A reliable backpack with capacity between 50 and 70 liters allows hikers to carry sufficient supplies between resupply points. The CDT's remoteness means hikers may need to carry five to seven days of food and several liters of water, adding significant weight.

A quality tent with weatherproof protection is essential given the frequent thunderstorms and unpredictable mountain weather. Many experienced CDT hikers use lightweight, three-season tents that provide adequate protection while minimizing weight. A sleeping bag rated for temperatures at or below 20 degrees Fahrenheit is recommended even for
