Understanding Courthouse Wedding Costs

A courthouse wedding offers a budget-friendly alternative to traditional ceremonies. Unlike elaborate venues, decorations, and catering, courthouse weddings focus on the legal marriage process itself. Understanding what you'll actually pay helps you plan accurately and avoid surprises.

The primary expense at a courthouse wedding is the marriage license fee. This fee varies significantly by location. For example, a marriage license in California costs between $40 and $100, depending on the county. In New York, fees range from $10 to $40. Texas charges around $74, while Florida costs approximately $93.50. These fees cover the administrative costs of processing your marriage application, conducting the waiting period, and issuing your official license.

Beyond the license itself, you may encounter additional courthouse fees. Some courthouses charge a filing fee separate from the license fee—sometimes $10 to $50 extra. A few jurisdictions charge for the actual ceremony performed by a judge or clerk, typically between $50 and $200. Some locations require certified copies of your marriage certificate, which cost $5 to $15 per copy. You'll want multiple certified copies for changing your name, updating records with employers, and applying for benefits.

The total cost for a basic courthouse wedding typically ranges from $100 to $300 in most U.S. locations. This represents one of the lowest-cost wedding options available. By comparison, the average traditional wedding in 2023 cost around $30,000 to $33,000.

Practical takeaway: Contact your specific county courthouse to learn their exact fees. Fees vary by jurisdiction, and knowing your courthouse's specific costs allows you to budget accurately.

Marriage License Fees by State and County

Marriage license costs depend on which state and county you marry in. Federal law does not set marriage fees, so each state creates its own regulations. Within states, individual counties sometimes set their own fees within state guidelines.

In the Northeast, New Hampshire offers one of the lowest costs at just $25. Connecticut charges $55. Maine runs $40, while Massachusetts charges $50. New York, as noted, ranges from $10 to $40 depending on the specific county. Pennsylvania charges $27 statewide, though the fee structure may include separate filing costs.

Midwestern states generally fall in the middle range. Illinois charges approximately $60, while Ohio costs around $47. Minnesota charges $115 per license. Wisconsin costs $106. Indiana runs approximately $99.50. Michigan charges $30. These fees often include the license itself and basic processing.

Southern states show more variation. Texas at $74 is moderate, while Georgia charges around $70. Florida at $93.50 is on the higher end. South Carolina costs $70. Mississippi charges $71. However, Louisiana charges only $35, making it one of the least expensive states. North Carolina runs $75.

Western states typically charge between $50 and $100. California's range of $40 to $100 reflects county variations—rural counties charge less than urban counties like Los Angeles and San Francisco. Colorado charges approximately $59. Washington State charges $66. Oregon runs $70. Nevada charges $105. Arizona costs around $83.

Practical takeaway: Visit your specific county clerk's website or call their office directly to confirm current fees. Many counties post their marriage license fees online, and staff can answer questions about payment methods and processing times.

What Your Marriage License Fee Actually Covers

The marriage license fee pays for several specific services and processes that happen behind the scenes at your courthouse. Understanding what you're paying for helps you see where your money goes.

First, your fee covers the administrative processing of your marriage license application. When you apply for a license, courthouse staff must review your application for completeness and accuracy. They verify that you've provided all required information—your legal name, date of birth, address, Social Security number (in most states), and any other state-specific requirements. This review process takes staff time and resources.

Your fee also covers the mandatory waiting period that exists in most states. Approximately 40 states have waiting periods ranging from one day to five days between when you apply for a license and when you can use it to marry. During this waiting period, the courthouse maintains your application, stores it safely, and processes it through their system. Your fee helps fund this holding period and the paperwork involved.

The license fee covers the actual printing and issuance of your marriage license document. This document must meet state standards for official records. It typically includes security features to prevent fraud. The paper stock, printing materials, and quality control all factor into production costs that your fee helps cover.

Many license fees also include the recording of your marriage with the state vital records office. When you marry, your courthouse reports this marriage to your state's vital records department, which creates an official state record of your marriage. This recording process requires staff time and data entry. Your initial fee often includes this filing.

Some courthouses include a certified copy of your license in the initial fee, though others charge separately for copies. One certified copy is standard in most places. This certified copy has the court's seal and signature, making it acceptable for legal purposes like changing your name or updating records with banks and employers.

Practical takeaway: Ask your courthouse staff what specific services your license fee includes. Some jurisdictions bundle more services into a single fee, while others separate costs for individual items like certified copies or courthouse ceremonies.

Fees You May Encounter Beyond the License

While the marriage license represents the main courthouse expense, several smaller fees may apply depending on your situation and location. Knowing about these helps prevent surprises at the courthouse.

Certified copies of your marriage certificate often cost extra. Most courthouses charge $5 to $15 per certified copy after you marry. You'll need these for name changes, updating your Social Security record, changing your driver's license, updating bank accounts, modifying insurance policies, and applying for various benefits. Many couples order 5 to 10 copies at once to cover these needs. If you order 5 copies at $10 each, that's $50 in addition to your license fee.

Some courthouses charge a separate ceremony fee if you want a judge or courthouse clerk to perform your marriage ceremony. This ranges from $50 to $200 depending on location. If you're bringing someone to perform the ceremony (such as an ordained friend or religious leader), this fee may not apply. However, if you want an official to conduct the ceremony, expect to pay extra.

A few jurisdictions charge for expedited processing. If you need your license faster than the standard waiting period allows, some courthouses offer expedited processing for an additional fee—typically $25 to $50. For example, if a state has a three-day waiting period, paying for expedited service might reduce it to one day.

Photo ID verification fees appear in some locations. While most people already have a driver's license or passport, if your courthouse verifies identification through their system, they may charge a small verification fee of $5 to $10.

Name change fees apply if you want to legally change your name through the courthouse at the time of marriage. Some states allow you to change your name on your marriage license itself at no extra cost. Other states require a separate legal name change process that involves additional court filings and fees ranging from $50 to $150 depending on the state.

Practical takeaway: When you contact your courthouse, ask specifically about fees for certified copies, courthouse ceremony performance, expedited processing, and name changes. Creating a written list of these fees helps you budget completely.

Planning Your Courthouse Wedding Budget

Creating a realistic budget for your courthouse wedding means accounting for all the expenses we've discussed, plus a few additional costs that may not be courthouse-specific but are part of your wedding day.

Start with your known courthouse fees. Add your marriage license fee, any courthouse ceremony fee, and certified copy costs. For most couples, this totals between $100 and $300. Write this down as your foundation. Then add any other costs specific to your location's requirements, like expedited processing fees if applicable.

Beyond courthouse fees, consider other wedding-day expenses. Most couples want a photograph of themselves on their marriage day. You might hire a photographer for $300 to $1,500, or ask a friend to take photos for free. A simple outfit costs nothing if you wear something you already own, or $50 to $500 if
