Learn About Receiving Disability and Social Security Together

Understanding Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

Social Security offers two main disability programs with different rules and requirements. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is based on your work history and the taxes you or a family member paid into Social Security. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a needs-based program that considers your income and resources, regardless of work history. Some people receive both programs at the same time, though the way benefits are calculated differs between them.

SSDI provides monthly payments based on your or a family member's earnings record. You may receive SSDI if you have worked and paid Social Security taxes for a certain period, then became unable to work due to a medical condition. The amount you receive depends on your previous earnings. Family members, including children and spouses, may also receive benefits based on your work record.

SSI provides monthly payments to people with limited income and resources, regardless of work history. This program is designed for individuals who are age 65 and older, blind, or disabled. SSI has strict income and resource limits. In 2024, the resource limit is typically $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples. Monthly income limits vary by state.

The key difference is that SSDI is an insurance program you pay into through work, while SSI is a welfare program funded through general tax revenue. You might receive both if your SSDI payment falls below SSI limits in your state, or if you have little work history but meet disability criteria. Understanding which program or programs you might receive information about helps you understand how the systems work together.

Practical Takeaway: Before exploring either program, gather information about your work history, current income, and resources. This foundation helps you understand which program's rules may apply to your situation.

Medical Criteria for Disability Recognition

To receive disability benefits through either SSDI or SSI, you must have a medical condition that meets Social Security's definition of disability. This definition is strict: the condition must prevent you from working and be expected to last at least 12 months or result in death. It is not enough to be sick for a short time or unable to work at your current job; the condition must prevent substantial work activity.

Social Security maintains a list called the Blue Book that describes conditions it recognizes as disabling. The list includes conditions in categories such as musculoskeletal disorders, special senses and speech, respiratory system, cardiovascular system, digestive system, genitourinary system, hemic and lymphatic system, skin, endocrine system, multiple body systems, neurological conditions, mental disorders, cancer, and immune system disorders. Each condition has specific medical criteria that must be met.

Your condition does not have to be on the Blue Book list to receive recognition. If your condition does not meet a listed impairment, Social Security may still determine you cannot work based on how your condition affects your ability to do basic work activities. This involves looking at your residual functional capacity—what you can still do physically and mentally despite your condition.

Medical evidence is crucial to the process. You will need current medical records, test results, doctor's statements, and treatment history. The more recent and detailed your medical documentation, the clearer the picture of how your condition affects your daily functioning. Social Security reviews records from your doctors, hospitals, and mental health providers.

Common conditions that Social Security recognizes include arthritis, cancer, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, lung disease, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson's disease, severe depression, schizophrenia, and traumatic brain injury. However, having a diagnosis alone does not mean you will receive benefits—the severity and how it prevents work activity matters most.

Practical Takeaway: Gather all medical records and documentation from the past three years. Keep a detailed record of treatments, medications, hospital visits, and how your condition affects your ability to work, including both physical and mental limitations.

How Work History Affects Receiving Both Programs

Your work history determines whether you can receive SSDI and may affect SSI payments if you receive both programs. SSDI requires a certain amount of work history under Social Security. You earn credits through paid work—in 2024, you earn one credit for each $1,705 in wages or self-employment income, up to four credits per year. Most people need 40 credits total, with 20 of those credits earned in the 10 years before becoming disabled. However, younger workers may need fewer credits.

If you have enough work credits, you can receive SSDI based on your own record. Family members can receive benefits on your record if you have the required credits. A spouse or ex-spouse age 50 or older and disabled can receive benefits. Children under 19 (or up to age 19 if in high school) can receive benefits. An ex-spouse age 62 or older can receive benefits even if you have not yet claimed your own benefits.

If you have little or no work history, you may not have enough credits for SSDI. In that situation, you might receive SSI instead, which does not require work history. Some people have some work history but not enough for full SSDI benefits. They may receive reduced SSDI or no SSDI, but might also receive SSI if their income and resources fall within limits.

Work history also matters for calculating your SSDI payment amount. Social Security looks at your highest-earning 35 years of work (or fewer if you have worked less than 35 years). Self-employment income, wages, and railroad retirement income all count. If you received workers' compensation or public disability benefits, these may affect your SSDI amount through a process called Government Pension Offset or Windfall Elimination Provision.

Young people with little work history often cannot receive SSDI but may receive SSI if they are disabled and their family's income and resources meet the limits. Parents may have contributed enough work credits to the Social Security system to allow their disabled child to receive benefits on the parents' record once the child turns 18.

Practical Takeaway: Create a timeline of all jobs held, including approximate start and end dates, employer names, and whether self-employed. This helps you understand your work credit history and which program you might learn about.

Income and Resource Limits When Receiving Both Programs

If you receive SSDI, there are no income or resource limits on your benefits. You can have any amount of savings or earned income and still receive your full SSDI payment. However, if you earn more than a certain amount through work, your SSDI benefits may be affected or stopped. In 2024, the limit is $1,550 per month for nonblind individuals and $2,590 for blind individuals. Once you pass the limit consistently, Social Security reviews your case to see if you can still be considered disabled.

SSI has strict income and resource limits. The monthly income limit in 2024 is typically $943 for individuals and $1,415 for couples, though this varies by state and can change yearly. Income includes wages, other benefits, and some support from others. However, some types of income do not count toward the limit, such as the first $65 of monthly earnings plus half of remaining earnings, certain in-kind support, food assistance benefits, and certain home energy costs.

Resource limits for SSI are $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples in 2024. Resources are things you own that you can convert to cash, including bank accounts, stocks, vehicles, and property. However, some resources do not count, such as your primary residence, one vehicle, personal possessions, and certain burial funds and life insurance policies.

When you receive both SSDI and SSI, the SSI limit applies to your total income. If your SSDI payment plus any other income exceeds the SSI limit, your SSI payment is reduced dollar-for-dollar for each dollar over the limit. For example, if the SSI limit is $943 and your SSDI payment is $900, you might also receive $43 in SSI. If your SSDI payment is $1,000, you would not receive SSI that month.

Unearned income—income that is not from work, such as pensions, unemployment benefits, or cash gifts—counts fully toward income limits. Earned income from work has special treatment with excluded amounts. If you live with
