Understanding What Warts Are and How They Form

Warts are small, rough bumps that grow on the skin. They are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. This virus is very common—most people will come into contact with it at some point in their lives. When HPV enters the skin through a cut or break, it can cause a wart to develop. The virus makes skin cells grow faster than normal, creating the bumpy appearance you see on the surface.

Warts can appear almost anywhere on the body, but they most often show up on hands, feet, and fingers. The type of wart depends on which strain of HPV caused it and where it grows. Common warts are raised and bumpy. Plantar warts grow on the bottom of the feet and often feel flat because of pressure from walking. Flat warts are smoother and smaller, usually appearing on the face or hands. Genital warts are a different type that requires medical attention.

It is important to understand that warts are not a sign of poor hygiene or a serious health problem. They spread through direct contact with the virus, which can happen by touching someone else's wart or by touching a surface where the virus lives. The virus needs a break in the skin to enter, so having small cuts or scraped skin increases your risk. People with weakened immune systems may develop warts more often or have them last longer.

Warts can stay on the skin for months or even years. Some people's immune systems eventually fight off the virus and the wart disappears on its own. Others need treatment to remove them. Knowing what type of wart you have is the first step toward deciding whether to treat it at home or see a doctor. Practical takeaway: Take a close look at your wart's appearance and location. Write down when it appeared and whether it has changed. This information helps you understand your options.

Common Over-the-Counter Home Removal Products

Many products sold without a prescription claim to remove warts at home. These products work in different ways. Salicylic acid is the most common active ingredient found in over-the-counter wart removers. This chemical works by breaking down the skin cells that make up the wart. Products containing salicylic acid come as liquids, gels, pads, or patches. The strength varies between brands, ranging from 12 percent to 40 percent salicylic acid.

Salicylic acid products work best on common warts on hands and feet. You typically apply them once or twice daily after soaking the wart in warm water and drying it thoroughly. The wart gradually shrinks and may fall off after several weeks of use. Results vary widely—some people see improvement in two to four weeks, while others need two to three months of treatment. Studies show that salicylic acid removes warts in about 50 to 60 percent of cases, depending on the strength and how consistently it is used.

Other over-the-counter options include products containing lactic acid and urea, which soften the wart tissue. Some products combine multiple active ingredients to increase effectiveness. Freezing products that you apply at home are also available. These use dimethyl ether propane, a substance colder than ice, to freeze the wart. The frozen wart may turn black and fall off within one to two weeks. However, home freezing products are not as cold as the liquid nitrogen used by doctors, so they may be less effective.

Before using any over-the-counter product, read the instructions carefully. Some products are not meant for use on the face or genitals. If you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system, talk to a doctor before using home wart removal products. Practical takeaway: Start with a lower-strength salicylic acid product and use it consistently as directed. Keep the wart area clean and dry between applications, as moisture reduces effectiveness.

Natural and At-Home Treatment Methods

Many people explore natural methods to remove warts, though scientific evidence for most of these approaches is limited. Apple cider vinegar is a popular home remedy. Some people apply it to a wart-covered bandage and leave it on for several hours daily. The idea is that the acid in vinegar breaks down wart tissue. While some anecdotal reports describe success, controlled studies have not proven that apple cider vinegar removes warts better than other methods. Any benefit may come simply from keeping the wart area moist and covered.

Tea tree oil is another natural product people use on warts. This essential oil has antimicrobial properties, but research on its effectiveness for wart removal is sparse. People typically dilute it with a carrier oil and apply it to the wart daily. Like salicylic acid products, results vary greatly between individuals. If you try tea tree oil, remember to dilute it first, as applying pure essential oil directly to skin can cause irritation.

Duct tape occlusion therapy involves covering the wart with duct tape for several days at a time. The theory is that the lack of air and the constant friction help destroy the wart. Some studies have found mixed results, with removal rates similar to salicylic acid. The process requires patience—it may take many weeks or months. You remove the tape periodically to soak and file the wart, then apply fresh tape.

Garlic, vitamin E, onion juice, and other natural substances have been suggested for wart removal, but research supporting these methods is very weak or nonexistent. Patience and consistency matter more than the specific product or method when using home treatments. It is also worth noting that some warts simply do not respond to home treatment, and waiting too long before trying medical options means living with the wart longer. Practical takeaway: If you choose a natural method, commit to it for at least four to six weeks before deciding it is not working. Keep track of any changes in the wart's size or appearance.

Medical Removal Options Provided by Healthcare Professionals

Doctors and dermatologists have access to stronger treatments than over-the-counter products. One common medical treatment is cryotherapy, which uses liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart. Liquid nitrogen is much colder than home freezing products, reaching temperatures below -300 degrees Fahrenheit. During the procedure, a doctor applies liquid nitrogen directly to the wart using a spray or cotton swab. The wart tissue freezes and dies, and the wart typically falls off within one to three weeks. Cryotherapy works for about 70 to 80 percent of common warts, though multiple treatments may be needed.

Salicylic acid peels administered by a healthcare provider are stronger than over-the-counter versions. These medical-grade peels may contain 50 percent salicylic acid or higher. A doctor applies the peel to the wart and surrounding area, and it breaks down the wart tissue more effectively than home products. These peels often require several treatments spaced one to two weeks apart.

Laser therapy is another option, particularly for warts that have not responded to other treatments. Different types of lasers work in different ways. Some vaporize the wart tissue, while others stimulate the immune system to fight the virus. Laser treatment can be expensive and may leave scarring, so doctors typically use it when other methods have failed. Pulsed dye lasers and CO2 lasers are the most common types used for warts.

Other medical treatments include immunotherapy, where a substance is applied or injected to trigger the immune system to attack the wart, and surgical removal, where a doctor cuts out the wart. Topical medications like imiquimod or tretinoin may also be prescribed. Some doctors use a combination of treatments for stubborn warts. Medical treatments generally work faster than home remedies and have higher success rates, but they cost more and may cause temporary discomfort or scarring. Practical takeaway: If a wart has been present for more than a few months or is in a sensitive location, consider scheduling a consultation with a dermatologist to learn about medical options that may be right for your situation.

When to See a Doctor About Warts

Most warts do not require medical attention, but certain situations call for professional evaluation. You should see a doctor if a wart is on your face, as facial warts may benefit from treatments that minimize scarring. Genital warts always require medical attention, as they need specialized treatment and may indicate HPV infection that requires monitoring. Plantar warts—those on the bottom of the feet—often benefit from professional treatment because the constant pressure from
