Learn About Growing Catnip Indoors and Outdoors

Understanding Catnip and Why Cats Love It

Catnip, scientifically known as Nepeta cataria, is a perennial herb that belongs to the mint family. Native to Europe and Central Asia, this plant has been documented for centuries as a source of fascination for cats. The plant contains a chemical compound called nepetalactone, which triggers a behavioral response in many felines. When cats encounter catnip, they may rub against it, roll in it, purr loudly, or jump around playfully. This reaction typically lasts between 5 and 15 minutes, after which the cat becomes temporarily unresponsive to the plant for about 30 minutes before the reaction can occur again.

Not all cats respond to catnip equally. Research indicates that approximately 70 to 80 percent of cats show a strong reaction to catnip, while about 10 to 30 percent show little to no response. Kittens under three months old and senior cats over ten years old tend to have weaker reactions. The sensitivity to catnip is hereditary, meaning a cat's responsiveness often depends on its genetic makeup. Even among responsive cats, individual preferences vary—some prefer to eat catnip, others prefer to roll in it, and some enjoy both experiences.

Understanding how catnip works can help you decide whether growing it makes sense for your household. Beyond the recreational enjoyment it provides cats, catnip also has calming properties and can be used to reduce stress in anxious felines. Some pet owners use catnip to encourage exercise or to train cats to use specific toys or areas. Learning about your cat's individual response to catnip will help you determine whether cultivating your own supply is worthwhile.

Practical Takeaway: Before investing time in growing catnip, observe your cat's behavior around commercial catnip products. If your cat shows interest—rubbing, rolling, or chewing—then growing your own supply may be a rewarding project. Keep notes on how long your cat's reaction lasts and how frequently you'd need fresh catnip to maintain regular play sessions.

Growing Catnip Outdoors: Location, Soil, and Planting

Outdoor catnip cultivation begins with selecting the right location and preparing your soil properly. Catnip thrives in areas that receive six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. The plant is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 9, meaning it can tolerate a wide range of temperatures across most of North America. Catnip is notably drought-tolerant once established, making it a low-maintenance addition to outdoor gardens. The plant prefers well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, though it adapts to various soil conditions reasonably well.

When preparing your garden bed, work organic matter like compost into the soil to improve drainage and nutrient content. Catnip doesn't require especially rich soil, but adequate drainage is crucial since the plant is susceptible to root rot in wet conditions. If your garden has heavy clay soil, consider building a raised bed or amending the soil with sand and compost to improve drainage. Space catnip plants about 12 to 18 inches apart, as the plant grows to approximately 2 to 3 feet tall and spreads outward as it matures.

You can start catnip from seeds, cuttings, or transplants. Seeds are the most economical option and should be planted in spring after the last frost date in your area. Scatter seeds directly on prepared soil and press them gently into the surface—catnip seeds need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist for the first two to three weeks until seedlings emerge, which typically takes 7 to 10 days. Alternatively, start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost date, then transplant seedlings outdoors once they develop true leaves. If you have access to an established catnip plant, you can propagate new plants from stem cuttings in late spring or early summer.

Practical Takeaway: Catnip grows readily from seed, making it an economical option for beginners. Start seeds in spring in a sunny garden bed with good drainage. If your area has poor soil drainage, invest in creating a raised bed or use containers instead. Monitor moisture during the first month of growth, but avoid overwatering once the plant is established.

Caring for Outdoor Catnip: Watering, Fertilizing, and Maintenance

Once your catnip plants are established in the outdoor garden, they require minimal care. Water newly planted seedlings regularly to keep soil consistently moist during their first four to six weeks. After this establishment period, catnip becomes quite drought-tolerant and typically needs watering only during extended dry spells or in arid climates. A good rule of thumb is to water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. During the growing season (spring through early fall), check soil moisture weekly, especially if your region experiences high heat or strong winds.

Catnip doesn't require frequent fertilizing, particularly if you've enriched the soil with compost before planting. Too much nitrogen can actually reduce the plant's potency and flavor. If you choose to fertilize, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer once in spring as new growth emerges. Alternatively, you can top-dress the plant with compost in early spring. Avoid chemical fertilizers if possible, especially since you're growing this herb for your cat to consume.

Maintenance tasks include pinching back the growing tips in early summer to encourage bushier growth and prevent the plant from becoming too leggy. As flowers develop in mid to late summer, you can leave some for aesthetic purposes and to attract pollinators, or deadhead (remove) spent flowers to encourage continued leaf production. Catnip flowers are attractive to bees and butterflies, making your plant a beneficial addition to a pollinator garden. In fall, allow some flowers to remain so the plant can self-seed if desired. In spring, remove any dead or damaged stems from the previous year before new growth begins.

Practical Takeaway: Water established catnip plants sparingly—only when soil dries out. Skip fertilization or apply compost once yearly in spring. Pinch back new growth in early summer to create a fuller plant. Remove spent flowers if you want to focus leaf energy on growth, but allow some flowers to bloom for pollinator benefit and natural reseeding.

Growing Catnip Indoors: Containers, Light, and Environment

Growing catnip indoors offers several advantages, including year-round availability, protection from weather extremes, and the ability to keep the plant away from outdoor pets or wildlife that might damage it. Successful indoor catnip cultivation requires understanding the plant's basic environmental needs. Start with a container that is at least 6 to 8 inches deep with drainage holes in the bottom. Clay pots work well because they allow soil to dry out between waterings, though plastic containers are also suitable. Use a well-draining potting mix formulated for herbs or general houseplants—avoid dense garden soil, which tends to retain too much moisture indoors.

Light is the most critical factor for growing healthy indoor catnip. The plant requires at least 6 to 8 hours of direct or very bright indirect light daily. A south-facing window that receives strong sun for most of the day is ideal. If your home doesn't have access to sufficient natural light, consider using a grow light positioned 6 to 12 inches above the plant. LED grow lights designed for herbs work efficiently and produce less heat than older lighting options. Set grow lights on a timer to provide 12 to 14 hours of light daily, mimicking spring and summer conditions that promote robust growth.

Indoor temperature and humidity also influence catnip growth. The plant prefers temperatures between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, which matches most comfortable household temperatures. Avoid placing the container near heat vents, air conditioning units, or drafty windows, as fluctuating temperatures can stress the plant. Indoor humidity is typically lower than what catnip prefers, so you may notice slower growth or slightly smaller leaves compared to outdoor plants. If you live in a particularly dry climate, place the pot on a saucer with pebbles and a small amount of water to increase ambient humidity around the plant, or mist the leaves occasionally.

Practical Takeaway: Choose a south-facing window or use a grow light to provide 6 to 8 hours of light daily. Plant
