How to Turn On Screen Recording iPhone

Understanding iPhone Screen Recording and Its Purpose

Screen recording on iPhone allows you to capture video of everything happening on your device's display. This feature records both what you see on screen and the audio playing through your iPhone's speaker or microphone. Apple introduced this functionality across most iPhone models, making it a standard tool for creating tutorials, documenting issues, sharing gameplay, or recording video calls.

The screen recording feature works by creating a video file that saves directly to your iPhone's photo library. When you record, you can choose whether to include audio from your device, audio from your microphone, or no audio at all. The video quality captures at the same resolution as your display, meaning newer iPhone models with higher resolution screens will produce clearer recordings. Recording stops automatically when you stop it manually, or you can set it to record for a specific duration.

Different reasons people use screen recording include making instructional videos for apps or websites, capturing error messages to send to tech support, recording video conversations for personal reference, documenting mobile game achievements, or creating content for social media. The feature works on iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and all newer models. Older models like iPhone 8 or earlier do not have native screen recording built into the operating system.

Before you begin recording, think about what audio you want captured. If you're recording an app that plays sound, that audio will record automatically. If you want to narrate what you're doing, you'll need to turn on microphone audio. If you want a silent video, you can turn off microphone access for the recording.

Practical takeaway: Screen recording captures your iPhone's display and audio in a video file. Identify your purpose for recording and whether you need audio before starting, as this affects your recording settings.

Locating Screen Recording in Control Center

Screen recording appears in Control Center, which is the quick-access menu you open by swiping down from the top-right corner of your iPhone's screen. Control Center contains shortcuts to commonly used features and settings. To see if screen recording is already visible in your Control Center, swipe down from the top-right corner and look for an icon that resembles a circle with a filled dot inside it—this is the screen recording button.

If you don't see the screen recording option in your Control Center, you need to add it through settings. Open the Settings app on your iPhone and scroll down to find "Control Center." Tap on Control Center to view all available controls. You'll see two sections: "Included Controls" shows features already in your Control Center, and "More Controls" shows features you can add. Scroll through "More Controls" until you find "Screen Recording." Once you locate it, tap the green plus sign next to Screen Recording to add it to your Control Center.

The order of items in your Control Center matters if you have many shortcuts. After adding Screen Recording, you can rearrange it by long-pressing the screen recording icon in Control Center and dragging it to a new position. This is useful if you use screen recording frequently and want it easily accessible at the top of your Control Center menu.

On some iPhone models with an older design, Control Center opens by swiping up from the bottom of the screen instead of down from the top. Check which method works for your specific iPhone model if you're unsure. Once you've added Screen Recording to your Control Center, it stays there permanently unless you remove it through settings.

Practical takeaway: Screen recording lives in Control Center. If it's not visible, go to Settings, tap Control Center, find Screen Recording in "More Controls," and tap the plus sign to add it.

Opening Control Center and Accessing Screen Recording

To open Control Center and start recording, perform the swipe gesture for your iPhone model. For iPhones with Face ID—which includes iPhone X and all newer models—swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen. You need to swipe from an area near the top-right edge where the notch or Dynamic Island sits. Swipe with your finger in a downward motion, and Control Center slides onto your screen from the top.

Once Control Center is open, locate the screen recording icon. It looks like a circle with a small filled circle inside it. The icon is typically white or light gray on a dark background. If you added Screen Recording to your Control Center in the previous step, it should be visible. Tap once on the screen recording icon to begin recording.

When you tap the icon, a countdown appears—typically three seconds—before the recording starts. This countdown gives you time to close Control Center and position your iPhone to record whatever you want to capture. You can use this three-second window to navigate to the app or screen you want to record before the video actually begins capturing.

During the countdown and throughout recording, a red status bar appears at the top of your screen showing that recording is active. This bar remains visible during your entire recording session. If you need to stop recording before you intended, you have several options: tap the red status bar at the top, open Control Center and tap the screen recording icon again, or use the Screen Recording control in Control Center if it's still open.

Practical takeaway: Swipe to open Control Center, tap the screen recording icon, wait for the three-second countdown, then proceed with whatever activity you want to record. The red status bar confirms recording is active.

Configuring Audio Settings Before Recording

Before you start recording, decide whether you want audio included and what type of audio. Open Control Center and look at the screen recording icon. Press and hold (don't just tap) the screen recording icon—this opens a menu showing audio options. You'll see a microphone icon at the bottom of this menu. By default, the microphone may be off, meaning your recording will be silent except for sounds coming from your iPhone's speaker.

To turn on microphone audio, tap the microphone icon in this menu. When the microphone is on, it appears highlighted or colored, indicating that audio from your device's microphone will be recorded. If you want a silent recording, leave the microphone off. The audio from any apps or media playing on your iPhone will still record regardless of whether you turn on microphone audio—the microphone setting only controls whether your voice narrating or background noise gets captured.

Keep in mind that if you turn on microphone audio, your iPhone will record all sounds picked up by your device's microphone, including background noise, notifications, and any voice you add. If you're recording a call or app notification sounds, those audio elements will be included in your recording. For clean recordings with just app audio, keep the microphone off. For recordings where you want to explain or narrate what's happening, turn the microphone on.

Some iPhone models may show additional audio options in this menu, such as system audio settings or microphone level adjustments. Check your specific device to see what audio customization options appear. After you configure the audio the way you want it, close this menu by tapping elsewhere, then begin your recording as described in the previous section.

Practical takeaway: Long-press the screen recording icon in Control Center to access audio settings. Tap the microphone icon to turn microphone audio on or off before recording starts.

Stopping Your Recording and Locating the Video

To stop recording, you have three methods. First, you can tap the red status bar at the top of your screen during recording—this provides a quick way to stop without opening menus. Second, you can swipe down to open Control Center and tap the screen recording icon again to toggle it off. Third, if you set a specific recording duration, the recording will stop automatically when time runs out. Most people use the red status bar method because it's the fastest and most convenient while recording.

After you tap to stop recording, your iPhone processes the video and saves it to your Photos app. This typically takes a few seconds to a minute depending on how long you recorded and your iPhone's processing speed. You may see a notification confirming that the screen recording was saved. Once saved, the video becomes a regular video file in your photo library that you can view, edit, share, or delete just like any other video.

To find your screen recording, open the Photos app and navigate to the "Recents" album or scroll through your library. Screen recordings appear with a thumbnail showing a preview of what was recorded. You can identify them by their thumbnail image. If you recorded recently, your video likely appears at the top of your recent photos. Tap on any screen recording to play it back and verify it captured what you intended.
