Learn About What to Expect Before Surgery

Understanding Why Pre-Surgery Education Matters

Before any surgical procedure, your medical team will want you to understand what will happen during your operation and recovery. Pre-surgery preparation is one of the most important steps you can take to reduce complications and improve your outcomes. Research shows that patients who receive thorough education about their upcoming surgery tend to have shorter recovery times, experience less pain, and report higher satisfaction with their results.

The purpose of pre-surgery education is to help you feel prepared and informed. When you know what to expect, anxiety often decreases. Studies from the Journal of Surgical Research indicate that patients with higher levels of pre-operative knowledge experience reduced stress levels and better pain management after surgery. Your surgical team wants you to succeed, and part of that success starts before you even enter the operating room.

Understanding the pre-surgery process involves learning about several key areas: what tests or evaluations you'll need, how to prepare your body, what will happen on surgery day, what anesthesia involves, and what recovery will look like. Each surgery is different, and your specific situation may require different preparation than someone else's. However, the general principles remain the same across most surgical procedures.

Pre-surgery education also gives you a chance to ask questions and express concerns. Your surgeon, anesthesiologist, and nursing staff are there to answer what you need to know. Writing down questions before your appointments can help you remember everything you want to discuss. Don't hesitate to ask something multiple times if you didn't understand the first explanation.

Practical Takeaway: Request all available written materials about your specific surgery from your surgical team. These materials often include diagrams, timelines, and contact information for questions before your procedure date.

Medical Tests and Pre-Surgery Evaluation

Before most surgeries, your medical team will order tests to understand your current health status. These tests help surgeons and anesthesiologists plan the safest approach for your procedure. Common pre-surgery tests include blood work, electrocardiograms (EKGs), chest X-rays, and urinalysis. The specific tests you need depend on your age, overall health, the type of surgery, and any existing medical conditions.

Blood tests typically check your complete blood count, which measures red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Your surgical team also checks your blood chemistry, which includes kidney function, liver function, and electrolyte levels. These results help identify any hidden health issues that might affect your surgery or recovery. If you take blood thinners like warfarin or aspirin, blood work becomes even more critical, as your surgeon needs to know your clotting ability.

An EKG is a simple test that measures your heart's electrical activity. It takes about five to ten minutes and involves placing small stickers on your chest connected to a machine. This test is especially common for patients over 40, those with heart conditions, or those undergoing major surgery. Chest X-rays provide images of your lungs and heart to ensure they're functioning properly. A urinalysis checks for infections or other issues in your urinary system.

During your pre-surgery evaluation appointment, a nurse or physician's assistant will also review your medical history, current medications, and any allergies. They'll measure your blood pressure, temperature, and weight. This is the time to mention every medication you take, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Some medications must be stopped before surgery, while others need to be continued right up until your procedure. Never stop taking medications without specific instructions from your surgical team.

Your pre-surgery evaluation may also include a consultation with an anesthesiologist. During this visit, the anesthesiologist discusses which type of anesthesia will be used for your surgery and reviews your medical history to determine if you have any risk factors. They'll ask about previous anesthesia experiences and whether you or family members have had any problems with anesthesia in the past.

Practical Takeaway: Bring a complete list of all medications and supplements to your pre-surgery appointments. Include over-the-counter drugs like acetaminophen and ibuprofen, as well as herbal supplements, since these can affect bleeding and anesthesia.

Preparing Your Body and Following Pre-Surgery Instructions

Your surgical team will provide specific instructions about how to prepare your body before your operation. These instructions are critical for your safety and the success of your surgery. The most important instruction for most surgeries is fasting, which means not eating or drinking for a certain period before your procedure. Fasting typically begins the night before surgery and continues until a few hours after you arrive at the facility. The reason for fasting is to prevent food or liquid from entering your lungs during anesthesia, a complication called aspiration.

The fasting timeline varies depending on what type of anesthesia you'll receive and what type of surgery you're having. General anesthesia usually requires longer fasting periods than local anesthesia. Typically, you'll be told to stop eating solid food six to eight hours before surgery and to stop drinking clear liquids two to three hours before surgery. Your surgical team will give you exact times to follow. Always ask if you should take your regular medications with a small sip of water, since some medications must be taken before surgery.

Beyond fasting, you'll receive instructions about bathing and hygiene. Many surgical teams recommend bathing or showering the night before surgery and sometimes the morning of surgery. You may be asked to use a special antimicrobial soap to reduce bacteria on your skin. Don't apply lotion, deodorant, perfume, or makeup after your pre-surgery shower, as these can interfere with monitoring equipment during surgery.

Pay attention to instructions about clothing and jewelry. On surgery day, wear loose, comfortable clothing that's easy to remove. You'll change into a surgical gown at the facility, but loose clothing makes the transition easier. Remove all jewelry, piercings, wigs, and hairpieces before arriving. If you have nail polish or artificial nails, remove these as well, since your surgical team needs to monitor the color of your nail beds and fingertips to check oxygen levels during surgery. Leave all valuables at home or give them to a trusted person, as surgical facilities aren't responsible for lost items.

If your surgery involves your abdomen or digestive system, you may need to prepare your bowels. This might involve taking a laxative the day before surgery or using an enema. If you're having surgery on your lower body or legs, you might be asked to shave or clip hair in the surgical area. Never shave with a razor, as small cuts can increase infection risk. Use clippers or an electric razor if you're asked to remove hair.

Practical Takeaway: Write down all pre-surgery instructions and post them where you'll see them daily. Set phone reminders for fasting times and preparation steps. Call your surgical team immediately if you have questions about any instruction.

Understanding Anesthesia and What Happens During Surgery

Anesthesia is medication that prevents you from feeling pain during surgery. There are several types of anesthesia, and your surgical team will choose the type that's safest and most appropriate for your specific procedure. Understanding anesthesia can reduce anxiety and help you know what to expect when you wake up after surgery.

General anesthesia puts you completely to sleep. You receive medication through an IV line or by breathing in gases through a mask. Once you're asleep, a tube may be placed in your throat to help you breathe during surgery. You won't remember anything from the time you fall asleep until you wake up in the recovery room. General anesthesia is commonly used for major surgeries and procedures that take longer than 30 minutes. The anesthesiologist monitors your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and breathing throughout your surgery.

Regional anesthesia numbs a specific area of your body while you remain awake or lightly sedated. Common types of regional anesthesia include spinal blocks, epidurals, and nerve blocks. These are often used for surgeries on the arms, legs, hands, or feet. With regional anesthesia, you might feel pressure or movement during surgery but not pain. Some patients prefer regional anesthesia because they avoid the side effects sometimes associated with general anesthesia, like nausea and sore throat.

Local anesthesia numbs only a small area and is used for minor procedures. You remain fully awake and alert. Your surgeon may give you medication through an IV to help you relax, called sedation or twilight anesthesia. With twilight anesthesia, you're in a light sleep and won't remember
