How to Turn Off Life360 on Your Phone

Understanding Life360 and Why You Might Want to Turn It Off

Life360 is a family location-sharing application that allows users to track the real-time locations of family members on a smartphone or computer. The app was founded in 2008 and has grown to include millions of active users worldwide. According to Life360's own reporting, the platform serves as a way for families to stay connected by sharing location data, sending alerts when family members arrive at or leave specific locations, and providing emergency assistance features.

The app works by using your phone's GPS, cellular data, and WiFi signals to determine your location and transmit that information to other family members who are part of your shared circle. Life360 offers both free and premium subscription tiers, with the premium version (called Life360+) providing additional features like crash detection and roadside assistance.

People choose to turn off Life360 for various reasons. Some users feel they no longer need the service after their children reach adulthood. Others find the constant location tracking invasive or prefer to manage their privacy differently. Some users experience battery drain from the app running continuously in the background. Teenagers might want to limit tracking as they gain independence. Parents may discontinue the service when their family's circumstances change.

Understanding why you want to turn off the app helps determine which method works best for your situation. Turning off location sharing is different from uninstalling the app entirely. Some people want to pause sharing temporarily, while others want to remove all traces of the application from their device.

Practical Takeaway: Before taking action, decide whether you want to temporarily stop sharing your location, pause notifications, or completely remove the app from your phone. This choice will guide which steps you should follow.

How to Pause Location Sharing Without Uninstalling

If you want to stop sharing your location with your family circle but keep the app installed on your phone, you can pause your location sharing through the app's settings. This method keeps the app on your device but prevents it from transmitting your location data to other family members. This approach works well if you think you might want to resume sharing later or if other family members rely on the app for their own purposes.

To pause location sharing on most Android devices: Open the Life360 app and tap on your profile icon, usually located in the top corner of the screen. Look for settings or preferences options. Navigate to location sharing settings and find the toggle or switch that controls whether your location is being shared. Tap this toggle to turn off location sharing. The app will remain on your phone, but your location will no longer be visible to other family members in your circle.

For iPhone users, the process is similar: Launch the Life360 app and navigate to your profile or account section. Look for location sharing or privacy settings. Find the option to pause or disable location sharing and select it. You may see a notification asking you to confirm this choice.

When you pause location sharing, other family members will typically see your status as "location off" or "not sharing location" rather than seeing your actual location. Some versions of the app may send notifications to circle members when someone stops sharing their location, so be aware that others in your circle may receive an alert about your change.

If you have Life360+ (the paid subscription), you can manage these settings through the premium features menu. Some premium users also access settings through the Life360 web portal, which allows you to manage sharing preferences from a computer browser.

Practical Takeaway: Pausing location sharing through app settings takes about two minutes and keeps the app installed if you want to resume sharing later. Check your profile settings first to locate the sharing toggle specific to your device type.

Adjusting Privacy and Permission Settings on Your Device

Beyond the Life360 app's own settings, your phone's operating system also controls which apps can access location information. Even if Life360 is installed, you can restrict its permission to access your phone's location services through your device settings. This creates an additional layer of privacy control and can help reduce battery drain from GPS usage.

On Android devices, access location permissions by going to Settings, then Apps or Application Manager. Find Life360 in the list of installed applications. Tap on Life360 and look for Permissions. Select Location permissions and choose "Don't allow" or "Allow only while using the app" instead of "Allow all the time." This prevents the app from tracking your location when you're not actively using it.

iPhone users can adjust location permissions through Settings, then Privacy, then Location Services. Find Life360 in the list of apps. You'll see options including "Never," "While Using," or "Always." Selecting "Never" prevents Life360 from accessing your location data at all. Choosing "While Using" allows location access only when you have the app open.

Beyond location permissions, consider reviewing other permissions Life360 requests. The app typically asks for access to contacts, storage, camera, and microphone. You can review each permission individually and revoke access to any features you don't want the app to use. Go through your device's app permissions menu and disable any Life360 permissions that feel unnecessarily invasive.

Restricting app permissions differs from uninstalling because the app remains on your phone but cannot function at full capacity. This approach is useful if you want to keep the app for occasional use or if family members ask you to keep it installed but you want to limit its capabilities.

Practical Takeaway: Visit your phone's settings menu and restrict Life360's location permission to "Never" or "While Using" to prevent background tracking without removing the app.

Steps to Completely Uninstall Life360 From Your Phone

If you've decided to fully remove Life360 from your device, the uninstall process is straightforward on both Android and iPhone. Uninstalling removes the app and stops it from using any of your phone's resources, including storage space, battery, and data.

For Android phones, start by holding your finger on the Life360 app icon on your home screen or app drawer. A menu will appear with options. Select "Uninstall" or "Remove." Some Android devices show an "X" or trash icon you can drag the app to. Confirm that you want to uninstall when prompted. On some Android versions, you can also uninstall through the Settings app by going to Apps, finding Life360, and selecting Uninstall.

iPhone users can uninstall by pressing and holding the Life360 app icon on the home screen until a menu appears. Select "Remove App" and then choose "Delete App" when prompted. Alternatively, go to Settings, then General, then iPhone Storage. Find Life360 in the list and select "Delete App." A third method involves going to the App Store, finding Life360 in your library of purchased apps, and selecting the remove or delete option there.

When you uninstall the app, it's removed from your device but your Life360 account remains active in the cloud. This means if you ever decide to reinstall the app, your circle and sharing history will still be accessible. Your family members will see that your location is no longer available once you uninstall, but your account itself isn't deleted.

Before uninstalling, you may want to inform family members that you're removing the app, particularly if you're the parent or account owner who set up the family circle. Some families rely on location sharing for safety coordination, so a heads-up prevents confusion when someone's location suddenly becomes unavailable.

Practical Takeaway: Hold down the Life360 app icon and select Uninstall (Android) or Remove App (iPhone). Your account remains saved in case you want to reinstall later.

Removing Your Account and Fully Deleting Data

If you want to go beyond simply uninstalling the app and actually delete your Life360 account entirely, you'll need to access account settings through the app or the Life360 website. This permanent deletion removes your profile, sharing history, and data from Life360's servers. This step is more thorough than uninstalling and is appropriate if you're certain you won't use the service again.
