Understanding What Amazon Offers to New Users

Amazon started in 1994 as an online bookstore and has grown into one of the world's largest e-commerce platforms. Today, Amazon operates in over 190 countries and serves hundreds of millions of customers worldwide. When you create an account with Amazon, you gain entry to a marketplace with millions of products across hundreds of categories—from electronics and clothing to groceries and household items.

A free Amazon account provides access to browse and purchase items, but the platform offers several distinct services beyond basic shopping. Amazon Prime, for example, is a membership program that requires a separate subscription fee. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a cloud computing division aimed at businesses. Amazon Music and Kindle are content services with their own pricing structures. Understanding these separate offerings helps you know what comes free with an account versus what requires additional payment.

The basic Amazon account itself is free to create and maintain. You pay only when you make purchases. Amazon generates revenue from seller fees and advertising, not from charging users to have an account. This means you can browse, save items to a wishlist, track orders, and review products without spending any money. The company does collect information about your browsing habits and purchase history, which it uses for recommendations and targeted advertising—a standard practice across e-commerce platforms.

Amazon's website and mobile app function identically in terms of core features. The app, available on iOS and Android devices, allows you to shop on your phone or tablet. Both versions sync your account information, so items saved on the website appear in your app and vice versa. As of 2024, mobile devices account for approximately 60% of all Amazon shopping traffic, reflecting how many customers prefer shopping through their phones.

Practical Takeaway: Before creating an account, clarify what you want to use Amazon for—shopping, streaming, cloud services, or reading. Each service may have different account requirements or subscription costs. The shopping account itself is always free.

Step-by-Step Process for Creating Your Amazon Account

Creating an Amazon account takes approximately five to ten minutes. The process begins on Amazon's homepage, where you'll see a "Sign In" or "Account" button in the upper right corner. Click this button, and you'll be presented with two options: sign in if you already have an account, or create a new one. Select the option to create a new account.

Amazon will ask you to provide your name, email address, and a password. Your name should match the name you'll use for billing and shipping. Your email address serves as your account username—you'll enter this along with your password each time you sign in. Amazon uses your email for order confirmations, shipping updates, and account notifications, so use an email address you check regularly. Your password should be strong, combining uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using easily guessed information like birthdates or common words.

After entering these three pieces of information, Amazon sends a verification code to your email address. You'll need to enter this code on the website to confirm you own the email address. This security step prevents someone else from creating an account using your email without your knowledge. Check your inbox and spam folder, as the verification email sometimes gets filtered. Once you enter the code, your account is created.

Next, Amazon asks you to add a payment method. You can use a credit card, debit card, or bank account. Amazon accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. You must provide the card number, expiration date, and the three-digit security code on the back. For billing address, enter the address where that card is registered. If you have a different shipping address—for example, if you want packages sent to an office rather than your home—you can add multiple addresses to your account.

At this point, your account is fully active and ready to use. You don't need to provide additional information unless you plan to sell items on Amazon or use specialized services. Many users add a phone number to their account for delivery notifications, though this is optional. You can also add alternate payment methods, such as a second credit card or gift card balance.

Practical Takeaway: Use a secure, unique password and verify your email address promptly. Save your account login information in a secure password manager so you don't forget it.

What Information Amazon Requires and How It's Used

To create and use a basic Amazon account, you must provide minimal required information: your full name, a valid email address, and a password. For purchasing, you also need at least one payment method (credit card, debit card, or bank account) and a shipping address. Amazon does not require a phone number, though providing one enables SMS delivery notifications. Amazon does not require you to provide your date of birth, social security number, or government ID for a basic shopping account.

Beyond these required fields, Amazon collects extensive optional information. When you complete your profile, you can add a profile photo, biography, and preferences. When you shop, Amazon tracks which products you view, how long you look at each item, which you add to your cart, and which you purchase. It tracks your searches, clicks, ratings, and reviews. This data collection forms the basis of Amazon's recommendation engine—the feature that suggests products based on your browsing and purchase history.

Amazon shares your information with third parties in specific circumstances. If you purchase from a third-party seller (not Amazon itself), that seller receives your name, address, phone number, and email so they can ship and communicate about your order. Amazon's advertising partners receive aggregated, anonymized data about shopping trends but not your personal information. Amazon does not sell your personal data to data brokers, though this is different from advertising partners who pay to show ads within Amazon's platform.

Amazon retains your purchase history indefinitely unless you delete it. You can access and manage your data through the "Your Account" section under "Manage Your Content and Devices." Here you can view all past orders, delete specific orders from your history, manage saved addresses and payment methods, and adjust privacy settings. Amazon allows you to download a copy of your personal data in a standard format. You can also request that Amazon delete your account entirely, though this removes your order history and account access.

Amazon's privacy policy is detailed and updated regularly. As of 2024, Amazon processes customer data according to regulations including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for European customers and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) for California residents. These laws grant users specific rights regarding their data, including the right to access, correct, and delete personal information.

Practical Takeaway: Review Amazon's privacy settings after creating your account. Adjust recommendation preferences and advertising settings to match your comfort level with data collection and personalized ads.

Optional Features and Account Customization

Once your account exists, numerous optional features enhance your shopping experience. Amazon's "Save for Later" feature lets you add products to a separate list without adding them to your cart. This is useful for items you're considering but not ready to purchase. You can organize these items, share the list with others through a shareable link, or move items to your cart whenever you're ready. Lists can be organized by category—for example, you might create separate lists for electronics, clothing, and home goods.

Amazon's wishlist feature serves a similar purpose but is often shared with friends and family. You can create multiple wishlists and designate them as public or private. Public wishlists can be shared via a link so others know what gifts you'd appreciate. Many customers use wishlists to keep track of items they want to purchase later or to give others gift ideas. According to Amazon's data, wishlists are most commonly used during holiday seasons.

Your account settings allow you to adjust notification preferences. You can choose to receive email updates about orders, recommendations based on your shopping history, and promotional offers from Amazon and its partners. You can also opt out of specific types of communications—for example, you might want order updates but not promotional emails. These preferences can be changed anytime through "Your Account" under "Communication Preferences."

Amazon allows you to set up "1-Click Ordering" for faster checkout. This feature saves your default payment method and address so that purchases require only a single click. While this speeds up purchasing, some people disable it to prevent accidental orders. Parents sometimes disable 1-Click on family devices to prevent children from making unintended purchases.

The "Subscribe & Save" feature offers recurring deliveries of items you purchase regularly—typically household supplies, pet food, or personal care products. Subscribing to items usually provides a discount ranging from 5% to 20%, depending on the product and
