How to Strip Wire With a Wire Stripper Guide

Understanding Wire Strippers and How They Work

A wire stripper is a hand tool designed to remove the outer plastic or rubber coating, called insulation, from electrical wires. This insulation protects the copper or aluminum conductor inside the wire and keeps it safe from short circuits and electrical hazards. Wire strippers consist of two main parts: handles that you squeeze together and a cutting head with small notches or holes of different sizes. These notches correspond to standard wire gauges, which measure wire thickness.

The most common type of wire stripper is the manual hand tool, which costs between $10 and $30 and works through simple mechanical action. When you squeeze the handles, small blades inside the tool cut through the insulation without damaging the conductor wire beneath. Different models offer various features: some have adjustable cutting depths to prevent nicking the wire, while others have built-in crimpers for attaching connectors or cutters for trimming wires to length.

Wire gauge sizes range from very thin 32 AWG (American Wire Gauge) wires used in electronics to thick 0 AWG wires in heavy-duty electrical systems. Most household and standard electrical work uses wire gauges between 10 and 22 AWG. Your wire stripper should have notches that match the gauges you plan to strip. Using the wrong size notch can either fail to cut the insulation or damage the conductor wire itself, creating safety hazards and weak connections.

Understanding your specific wire stripper model matters because different manufacturers design their tools differently. Some use color-coded notches for different gauges, while others use numbers. Before starting any stripping work, identify which notch matches your wire gauge by checking either the wire's packaging or the markings on the wire itself.

Practical Takeaway: Match your wire stripper's notch size to your wire's gauge before beginning. If you frequently work with different wire sizes, consider purchasing a stripper with a wide range of notch sizes or an adjustable model to handle multiple gauges effectively.

Selecting the Correct Wire Gauge Notch

The most common mistake people make when stripping wire is using the wrong notch size. Wire gauge is measured using the American Wire Gauge (AWG) system, where lower numbers indicate thicker wires. A 10 AWG wire is much thicker than a 22 AWG wire. Each notch on your wire stripper is precisely sized for a specific gauge, and using the wrong notch creates problems that can compromise electrical safety and connection quality.

To identify your wire gauge, look for printed markings directly on the wire's insulation. Most wires display their gauge number somewhere along the length. Common household electrical wire comes in gauges like 12 AWG and 14 AWG for standard outlets and switches, while smaller projects like electronics repair might use 18 AWG, 20 AWG, or 22 AWG. If the wire has no visible marking, check the original packaging or spool it came from, which will list the gauge specifications.

Wire stripper notches are typically labeled in two ways: some use the actual AWG numbers (10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22), while others use color bands or symbols. Study your specific stripper's labeling system before working. Many wire strippers include a reference chart printed on the handle or packaging showing which notch corresponds to which gauge. Keep this information visible while working until you become familiar with your tool.

If you cannot determine your wire gauge or your stripper lacks a notch for your wire size, you have alternatives. You can test the fit by inserting the wire into different notches and looking for one that holds the wire snugly without gaps. The correct notch should grip the wire firmly enough that the wire doesn't fall out when you hold the stripper vertically. Start with smaller notches and work up if needed, as using a notch that's too small won't cut the insulation effectively.

Practical Takeaway: Create a reference card for your wire stripper by photographing or writing down which notch corresponds to which gauge. Keep this with your tool to avoid confusion and ensure you select the right notch every time, reducing the risk of damaging wires or creating weak electrical connections.

Proper Technique for Inserting and Positioning the Wire

Inserting the wire correctly into your wire stripper is the foundation for successful stripping without damaging the conductor. Begin by selecting the correct notch based on your wire gauge, as discussed in the previous section. Then, open the stripper handles fully by pulling them apart. This reveals the cutting head and allows you to position the wire properly before applying pressure.

Hold the wire firmly in one hand, leaving about one to two inches of the end exposed past your fingers. This exposed section is where you'll insert the wire into the stripper. Position the wire into the selected notch with the end of the insulation you want to remove aligned with the cutting blades. The wire should sit straight and centered in the notch, not angled or twisted. Proper alignment is crucial because angled wires can catch on the cutting edges unevenly, resulting in partial cuts or nicks in the conductor.

Once the wire is positioned, verify that only the insulation—not the bare conductor—is in the cutting zone. Many wire strippers have a specific cutting depth built into their notches to prevent cutting into the conductor, but manually positioning the wire carefully adds an extra layer of protection. The amount of insulation you remove typically ranges from half an inch to one inch, depending on what you're connecting the wire to. Most electrical connectors require about three-quarters of an inch of bare conductor for proper connection.

Common positioning mistakes include inserting too much wire into the notch, which can cause the cutter to hit the conductor, or inserting too little, which leaves too much insulation on the wire. Another frequent error is twisting the wire while it's in the stripper, which can kink the conductor or cause uneven cutting. Keep your hand holding the wire steady and still while preparing to squeeze the handles. Some people benefit from resting their hand holding the wire against a work surface for added stability, particularly when working with very small or very large wires.

Practical Takeaway: Practice the insertion motion a few times without squeezing to ensure the wire sits perfectly centered in the notch and the insulation is positioned correctly. This takes only seconds and prevents most stripping mistakes before they happen.

Executing the Stripping Motion and Removing Insulation

After positioning the wire correctly in the notch, the actual stripping motion is straightforward but requires controlled pressure. Squeeze the handles together smoothly and evenly, applying steady pressure rather than a quick, jerky motion. The handles should come together until they meet resistance—you'll feel when the cutting blades have done their work. This typically requires a moderate amount of hand strength; the handles shouldn't require extreme force, as this suggests you're using the wrong notch size or the tool needs adjustment.

As you squeeze, the cutting blades inside the notch will slice through the insulation. You should hear a slight cutting sound, and depending on the insulation material, you might feel a gentle "pop" or release of tension. This indicates the blades have cleanly cut through the insulation all around the wire. Many modern wire strippers cut the insulation in a complete circle around the wire with a single squeeze, which is the ideal outcome.

Once the handles are fully closed or you've applied sufficient pressure, stop squeezing and release the handles. The insulation that was in the cutting zone has now been severed all around the wire's circumference. With the handles open again, gently pull the wire straight out of the stripper. As you pull, the stripped insulation should come off the conductor, typically sliding right off the end of the wire. If the insulation doesn't come off easily, it may not have been cut completely, or it may have been cut at an angle. Return the wire to the same notch and squeeze again, ensuring full pressure this time.

The stripped section should reveal clean, bare conductor without any insulation remaining on the exposed portion. Inspect the conductor to ensure it's undamaged—the wire should be smooth and intact with no nicks, cuts, or exposed strands that look crushed. If you see damage, the wire may not make a reliable electrical connection. In such cases, strip a different section of the wire further back, leaving the damaged portion unused, or discard the wire and start with a new section if too much has been compromised.
