How to Turn On Your Home's Hot Water

Understanding Your Home's Hot Water System

A home's hot water system is typically one of the largest energy consumers in a household, accounting for about 17-25% of residential energy use according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Before you can turn on hot water, it helps to understand what type of system you have. Most homes in the United States use one of three main types: a tank-based water heater, a tankless (on-demand) water heater, or a heat pump water heater. Each type operates differently, and knowing which one you have will determine how you access hot water.

Tank-based water heaters are the most common type, found in approximately 90% of American homes. These units store 40-80 gallons of heated water in an insulated tank, keeping it hot and ready to use. The heater continuously maintains the water temperature, so hot water is available immediately when you turn on a tap. Tankless water heaters, by contrast, heat water on-demand as it flows through the unit—there's no storage tank. These systems are becoming more popular, particularly in newer construction and renovations. Heat pump water heaters use electricity to move heat from the air or ground to warm water, making them highly energy-efficient but less common than traditional tank models.

Each system type has a main valve or switch that controls whether the system operates. For tank heaters, this is usually a thermostat dial or digital control panel. For tankless units, it's typically a power button or circuit breaker switch. Understanding your specific system type means you'll know exactly where to look when you need to turn on hot water or troubleshoot issues. The location of these controls varies by installation, but they're generally found near the unit itself or on a wall-mounted control panel.

Practical takeaway: Locate your water heater in your home—typically in a basement, garage, utility closet, or attic. Check the manufacturer's label or manual to identify whether you have a tank, tankless, or heat pump system. This information will guide every step that follows.

Locating and Identifying Your Water Heater's Main Controls

Your water heater's main controls are the gateway to operating your hot water system. For traditional tank water heaters, the most important control is the thermostat, which is usually a dial or digital display located on the lower front or side of the tank. This dial allows you to set the desired water temperature, typically ranging from 90°F to 140°F, though most households keep it around 120°F for a balance of safety and comfort. On older models, the thermostat might be a simple dial with markings like "Low," "Medium," and "Hot." Newer models often feature a digital readout where you can see the exact temperature setting.

Below the thermostat, you'll find the gas valve (if you have a gas water heater) or the heating element controls (if you have an electric model). For gas heaters, the valve typically has positions labeled "Pilot," "On," and "Off." The "Pilot" setting lights the pilot flame without heating water—this is useful for initial startup or if the pilot has gone out. The "On" position allows the main burner to heat water. For electric water heaters, the controls are often on a thermostat or a circuit breaker panel. Some electric models have two thermostats—one for the upper heating element and one for the lower—allowing different temperature zones within the tank.

Tankless water heaters have different controls. Most have a power button or switch, often located on the front panel or side of the unit. When powered on, these units are ready to heat water as it flows through. The temperature is usually controlled through a digital display screen where you can set your preferred hot water temperature. Some tankless models also have a remote control, giving you the option to adjust temperature from another location, such as a shower area. Heat pump water heaters typically have a control panel with a power switch and temperature settings similar to tankless units.

It's also important to locate your home's electrical circuit breaker or gas supply valve. For electric water heaters, a dedicated circuit breaker controls power to the entire unit. For gas water heaters, the main gas supply valve is located where the gas line connects to your home. These master controls let you shut down the entire system if needed for maintenance or emergencies. Additionally, locate the pressure relief valve and drain valve on your tank—these are important for safety and maintenance, even though they don't directly control hot water operation.

Practical takeaway: Take photos of your water heater's control panel and write down its make, model, and serial number. Store this information with your home documents. If you have the original manual, keep it accessible; if not, most manufacturers post manuals online by model number.

Steps to Turn On a Tank Water Heater

Turning on a tank water heater depends on whether your unit runs on gas or electricity, but the basic process is similar. For a gas water heater that's been completely shut off, follow these steps: First, make sure the gas supply valve (located where the gas line enters the heater) is in the "On" position—the valve handle should be parallel to the gas line. Next, locate the gas control valve on the front of the heater itself. This valve typically has three positions: "Pilot," "On," and "Off." Turn this dial to "Pilot." Then, press and hold the ignition button (or pilot light button) for 30-60 seconds while holding a lit match or lighter near the pilot opening—you should see a small flame ignite. Once the pilot is lit, release the button and turn the dial to "On." The main burner should ignite, and you'll hear a slight whooshing sound as gas flows to the burner.

For an electric tank water heater, the process is simpler. Locate your home's electrical panel (usually a metal box in the basement, garage, or utility closet) and find the breaker labeled for the water heater—it's typically a double-wide breaker rated for 30-50 amps. Switch the breaker to the "On" position. The heater will immediately begin heating any water in the tank. You should also check the thermostat setting on the tank itself to ensure it's set to your desired temperature. If the thermostat has been set to "Off," switch it to your preferred setting, typically between 110°F and 120°F for safety and energy efficiency.

If your tank heater has been sitting idle for several months, you may need to take additional steps. After turning on the water heater, run cold water through all fixtures in your home for a few minutes to clear air from the pipes. This prevents air locks that can cause sputtering or weak water pressure. Then, open a hot water tap and let it run for several minutes. The water may come out brownish or rusty-looking initially—this is normal when a tank has been unused. Continue running the tap until the water runs clear.

For gas water heaters, if the pilot light won't stay lit after several attempts, check that the gas supply is actually reaching the heater. Make sure the main gas valve is fully open and that no one has accidentally turned off the gas. If you still can't light the pilot, there may be a safety issue or the thermocouple (a device that confirms the pilot is lit) may need replacement. In this case, it's best to contact a professional plumber or the heater manufacturer for guidance.

Practical takeaway: After turning on your water heater, wait 20-30 minutes before expecting hot water to arrive at your taps. A fully empty tank takes time to heat. For tank heaters, you'll know the system is working properly when hot water consistently reaches your fixtures and the tank remains warm to the touch (but not dangerously hot).

Steps to Turn On a Tankless Water Heater

Tankless (on-demand) water heaters operate on a different principle than tank models, which means turning them on is a different process. Most tankless heaters are controlled by a power button or switch on the front panel of the unit. To turn on your tankless water heater, locate this power button—it's usually clearly labeled and may be red, black, or another color. Press or switch it to the "On" position. Unlike tank heaters, tankless units don't need to heat a large volume of water first; they begin heating water immediately as it flows through the system when you open a hot water tap.
