How to Set Up Verizon Call Forwarding Guide

Understanding Verizon Call Forwarding Basics

Call forwarding is a telecommunications feature that redirects incoming calls from one phone number to another phone number. When you set up call forwarding on your Verizon account, any calls that come to your primary phone number can be sent to a different number—such as your mobile phone, home phone, or work phone. This feature works whether your phone is turned on or off, and it operates through Verizon's network infrastructure rather than through your individual device.

Verizon offers call forwarding as a standard feature for both landline and mobile customers. The service has been available for decades and remains one of the most widely used telecommunications features in the United States. According to Verizon's service documentation, call forwarding is available to residential and business customers with compatible phone plans. The feature typically costs between $2.99 and $5.99 per month, though pricing may vary based on your specific plan and region.

There are several types of call forwarding that Verizon supports. Unconditional call forwarding sends all incoming calls to your selected number. Busy call forwarding only forwards calls when your line is in use. No answer call forwarding activates when you don't pick up within a set number of rings—typically between 3 and 30 rings, depending on your settings. Selective call forwarding allows you to forward calls from specific phone numbers while letting other calls ring through normally.

Understanding which type of call forwarding suits your needs is the first step in the setup process. Someone who travels frequently might prefer unconditional forwarding to ensure they never miss important calls. A business owner might use busy call forwarding to route customers to a second line when the primary line is occupied. A person who wants to screen calls might use selective forwarding to route only calls from their boss or family to a mobile phone while other calls go to voicemail.

Practical Takeaway: Before setting up call forwarding, identify which type matches your situation—whether you need all calls forwarded, calls during specific circumstances forwarded, or calls from particular people forwarded to a different number.

Setting Up Call Forwarding Through Your Verizon Account Online

The most straightforward way to set up call forwarding is through Verizon's online account management portal, which is available 24 hours a day. To begin, visit verizon.com and log into your account using your username and password. If you don't have an online account set up yet, you'll need to create one by providing your phone number, account PIN, and other verification information. The account creation process typically takes 5-10 minutes and allows you to manage various services without calling customer service.

Once logged into your account, look for the "Phone" or "Services" section in the main menu. The exact menu layout varies depending on whether you have a Verizon landline or mobile phone, but both options include call forwarding settings. For Verizon landline customers, navigate to the Phone Settings or Features section. For Verizon mobile customers using a smartphone, the process involves accessing the "Call Forwarding" option in your account settings—not in your phone's native settings, as Verizon call forwarding operates at the network level rather than the device level.

In the call forwarding section, you'll see options to enable the feature and enter the phone number where you want calls forwarded. The system will ask you to select which type of call forwarding you want—unconditional, busy, no answer, or selective. For no-answer forwarding, you'll specify how many rings should occur before the call forwards. Verizon's system typically allows you to set between 3 and 30 rings. After entering your forwarding number, the system will prompt you to confirm the settings before they take effect.

Most changes through the online portal take effect within a few minutes, though Verizon's system documentation indicates that some changes may take up to 24 hours to fully propagate through their network. During this time, your call forwarding may work intermittently. You can check the status of your settings by logging back into your account to verify that the information was saved correctly. If you need to make changes, you can repeat this process at any time—there's no waiting period between adjustments, and you can modify your forwarding settings as often as needed.

Practical Takeaway: Use the online account portal for setup if you prefer doing this on your own schedule without phone calls, as it provides immediate confirmation of your settings and allows you to track exactly what information you entered.

Setting Up Call Forwarding Through Verizon's Phone Services Menu

If you prefer setting up call forwarding directly from your phone, Verizon offers phone-based codes that allow you to activate features through your device's dial pad. For Verizon landline customers, the standard code for setting up unconditional call forwarding is *72, followed by the phone number to which you want calls forwarded. For example, if you want calls forwarded to your cell phone at 555-123-4567, you would dial *72, wait for a confirmation tone, then dial 555-123-4567. After you hear another confirmation tone, the feature is active.

To deactivate unconditional call forwarding, dial *73 from your landline phone. This code works from any phone connected to your Verizon line. For busy call forwarding, the activation code is *71, and you follow the same process of entering the forwarding number after the code. Busy call forwarding remains active until you dial *71 again or use a different call forwarding option. For no-answer call forwarding, use the code *61 followed by the forwarding number. You can adjust how many rings occur before forwarding by using additional codes after the number, though this method is more complex and many customers prefer the online portal for this adjustment.

Verizon mobile phone customers can also access call forwarding through their phone's settings, but the method depends on the type of phone. For iPhones running iOS, open Settings, go to Phone, then Call Forwarding, and enter the number where you want calls forwarded. For Android phones, the process varies by manufacturer and Verizon's specific configuration, but typically involves going to Settings, Phone, or Call Settings, then finding the Call Forwarding option. However, this phone-based setup still works through Verizon's network rather than locally on your device, so the same service features and limitations apply regardless of which method you use.

One important consideration with phone-based setup codes is that they work with landline phones and some older mobile phones more reliably than with modern smartphones. If you try to use these codes on a smartphone and they don't work, the online portal method is your next option. Additionally, dialing these codes requires you to have active phone service at that moment, whereas the online portal works even if your phone service is temporarily interrupted or if you're away from your Verizon phone.

Practical Takeaway: Phone-based setup codes (*72 for unconditional forwarding, *71 for busy forwarding, *61 for no-answer forwarding) work quickly if you remember them, but keep written instructions handy since you likely won't use these codes frequently.

Contacting Verizon Customer Service for Call Forwarding Setup

If you encounter difficulties setting up call forwarding through the online portal or phone-based codes, or if you prefer speaking with someone directly, Verizon's customer service representatives can configure call forwarding for your account. Verizon maintains customer service phone lines that operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The number to call depends on your location and service type—for most customers, calling 611 from a Verizon phone or 1-908-559-4899 from any phone connects you to the appropriate department.

When you contact customer service, have your account number, phone number, and the phone number where you want calls forwarded ready before calling. The representative will verify your identity by asking for information such as your account PIN, last four digits of your Social Security number, or other account details. This verification process typically takes 2-3 minutes and is a standard security procedure to prevent unauthorized changes to accounts. Verizon has implemented these procedures because call forwarding changes could potentially redirect calls away from legitimate account holders.

The representative can set up any type of call forwarding—unconditional, busy, no-answer, or selective—and can explain which option best suits your specific situation. They can also answer questions about pricing, service limitations
