How to Connect Your PS5 to Hotel WiFi

Understanding Hotel WiFi Network Types and Authentication

Hotel WiFi networks operate differently from your home internet. Most hotels use one of two main authentication systems: open networks that require you to accept terms through a login portal, or networks that require a password displayed on room information cards or at the front desk.

When you scan for available networks on your PS5, you'll see the hotel's network name (called an SSID). Some hotels broadcast multiple networks—a standard one, a guest network, and sometimes a premium tier. The standard guest network is what most visitors use and is typically the most compatible with gaming consoles.

Many hotels use portal-based authentication, which means when you first connect, a login page appears asking you to accept terms of service or enter a room number and last name. This creates a slight complication with the PS5 because the console doesn't have a built-in web browser. The workaround involves using a secondary device to complete the authentication before the PS5 can fully access the internet.

Understanding these network types matters because it affects which troubleshooting steps you'll need. A password-protected network is simpler—you enter the password once and you're done. A portal-based network requires additional steps involving another device like a smartphone or laptop.

Practical Takeaway: Before connecting, call the front desk or check your room information card to learn whether the network uses a password or a login portal. This determines which connection method to use.

Setting Up Your PS5 Network Connection

The PS5 connection process begins from the home screen. Navigate to Settings, then select Network, then Set Up Internet Connection. You'll see options for WiFi or ethernet connection. Choose WiFi since hotel rooms typically don't have ethernet ports available to guests.

After selecting WiFi, your PS5 will scan for available networks. This scan takes about 10-15 seconds. Once the list appears, find and select the hotel's WiFi network name. The console will then ask for the WiFi password if the network is password-protected.

If you don't see the hotel network listed, the network may be broadcasting but not appearing in the scan. Some older hotel systems or networks with special characters in their names occasionally don't show up. In this case, select "Specify a Network" or a similar option to manually enter the network name.

For password-protected networks, enter the password exactly as shown on your room card or information sheet. Passwords are case-sensitive, meaning capital letters matter. If connection fails after entering the password, double-check for typos—this resolves most connection failures.

The PS5 will attempt to connect and perform a network test. This test checks your internet speed and connectivity. You may see a message stating your connection speed or MTU settings. Don't worry if the speed shows as lower than your home network—hotel bandwidth is often shared among many guests.

Practical Takeaway: Have the WiFi password written down before starting the setup process. This prevents frustration from repeated incorrect entries due to typos.

Managing Portal-Based Authentication Networks

Portal-based networks—the kind that show a login page when you first connect—require a workaround because the PS5 lacks a web browser. Here's how to manage this situation.

When you connect the PS5 to a portal network, the console may show limited connectivity or an error. This is normal. The network itself is working, but the portal login page hasn't been completed. To finish authentication, use a smartphone, tablet, or laptop to connect to the same hotel network. Once you connect these devices, open a web browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge). You should automatically see the hotel's login portal.

The login portal typically asks for a room number and last name, or sometimes an email address. Enter the information as requested and accept the terms of service. Some hotels also ask you to create a profile or enter a password for that session. Complete all required fields and click the button to confirm your acceptance.

After you complete the portal login on your secondary device, return to the PS5 and test the connection again. Go back to Settings > Network and select "Test Internet Connection." The PS5 should now detect that the portal authentication has been completed and should establish full connectivity.

If the PS5 still shows limited connectivity, restart the console. Turn it completely off using the power button on the console itself (not the controller), wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on. This refreshes the network connection and often resolves portal-related issues.

Some hotels require re-authentication every 24 hours or after a certain period of inactivity. If your connection drops after several hours, repeat the portal login process on your secondary device.

Practical Takeaway: Keep your smartphone or laptop nearby during setup. You'll need it to complete portal authentication for the PS5 to access hotel networks that use login pages.

Optimizing Your PS5 Connection Speed in Hotels

Hotel WiFi speeds vary widely depending on the property size, number of guests connected, and the hotel's infrastructure investment. A small bed-and-breakfast might offer 5-10 Mbps per device, while a large resort could provide 20-50 Mbps. Gaming on PS5 generally functions with speeds as low as 5 Mbps, though faster connections provide better performance.

To optimize your connection speed, position your PS5 as close to the WiFi router as possible. Hotel routers are often mounted in hallways or in the office area, not in guest rooms. If your room is far from the router, the signal weakens. Walking around the room or hallway with your smartphone to check signal strength (usually shown in the WiFi settings) helps identify the best location. If the PS5 must stay in one spot, see if management will allow you to reposition a router temporarily.

Minimize interference from other devices. Microwaves, cordless phones, and baby monitors all operate on the same 2.4 GHz frequency that many WiFi networks use. Keep these devices away from your PS5 if possible. If your PS5 and the router support 5 GHz WiFi (check your hotel's network information), switch to that band. The 5 GHz frequency is faster but has shorter range, so only switch if you're relatively close to the router.

Reduce the number of devices connected to your account's network. Every device connected shares the available bandwidth. If you have multiple phones, tablets, and laptops connected, consider disconnecting ones you're not actively using. Temporarily disconnecting streaming services like Netflix on other devices also helps reserve bandwidth for gaming.

Check the time of day you're gaming. Hotel networks typically become slower during evening hours (6 PM to 11 PM) when most guests are using the internet. If you need maximum speed for large downloads or online gaming, try connecting during early morning or afternoon hours when fewer guests are online.

Practical Takeaway: Test your connection speed at different times and locations within your room to find the optimal setup, then position your PS5 accordingly.

Troubleshooting Common Connection Problems

If your PS5 won't connect to hotel WiFi, several issues could be responsible. The most common problem is an incorrect password. Hotel room cards and information sheets sometimes have typos in the printed password, or passwords may contain characters that look similar (the number zero versus the letter O, for example). If connection fails after several attempts, call the front desk and ask them to verbally confirm the exact password.

Another frequent issue involves MAC address filtering. Some hotels restrict WiFi access to devices they've registered. If the front desk mentions "adding your device" to the network, they're likely doing this registration. Provide them with your PS5's MAC address, which you can find in Settings > System > System Software > System Information. The MAC address appears as a series of numbers and letters (for example: AA-BB-CC-DD-EE-FF).

The PS5 occasionally fails to connect when the network uses older security settings or non-standard configurations. If other devices connect successfully but the PS5 doesn't, ask the front desk what WiFi standard the network uses (it should be WPA2 or WPA3). Some very old networks still use WEP encryption, which the PS5 may not recognize. In these cases, the hotel may need to create a guest network with updated security settings.
