How to Change Your Pinterest Username Guide

Understanding Pinterest Usernames and Why You Might Want to Change Yours

A Pinterest username is the unique identifier that appears in your profile URL and displays on your account across the platform. When you first create a Pinterest account, you choose a username that becomes part of your public profile. This username appears in your profile web address (like pinterest.com/yourusername), in search results, and whenever someone views your profile or pins.

Many people create Pinterest accounts quickly and don't put much thought into their initial username choice. Over time, your reasons for using Pinterest may change, your interests may evolve, or you might simply decide you want a different name that better represents you or your brand. Unlike some social media platforms that make username changes difficult or impossible, Pinterest built a straightforward process for changing your username whenever you want.

Common reasons people change their Pinterest usernames include: rebranding a business, moving from a personal account to a professional one, correcting a misspelled username from account creation, choosing a name that better reflects current interests or niche focus, or simply preferring a different style or format. The good news is that changing your username doesn't affect your pins, boards, followers, or any of your account history.

Understanding how usernames function on Pinterest helps you make an informed decision about whether to change yours. Your username remains visible to others and is the primary way people find and recognize your profile. If you're using Pinterest for business purposes, your username choice matters for branding consistency. If you're using it personally, your username can reflect your personality or interests.

Practical takeaway: Before changing your username, consider whether the new name aligns with how you want to present yourself on Pinterest and whether it will remain relevant to your goals on the platform.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Changing Your Username on Pinterest

Changing your Pinterest username involves accessing your account settings and updating your profile information. The process takes only a few minutes and can be completed on either the Pinterest website or mobile app, though the website version provides the clearest interface for making this change.

To change your username on the Pinterest website, start by logging into your account. Look for your profile icon, which typically appears in the top right corner of the screen. Click on this icon to open a dropdown menu with several options. Select "Settings and privacy" or simply "Settings" depending on your account version. This takes you to your account settings page where you can view and modify various profile details.

Once in Settings, locate the section labeled "Account" or "Profile." Within this section, you'll find a field displaying your current username. Click on this field or look for an "Edit" button next to your username. The system will allow you to type in your new desired username. Pinterest will check in real-time whether your proposed username is available. If the name you want is already taken by another user, Pinterest will indicate this and you'll need to try a different variation.

When choosing your new username, keep these guidelines in mind: usernames can contain letters, numbers, underscores, and hyphens; usernames cannot contain spaces; Pinterest usernames are case-insensitive (meaning "MyName" and "myname" are treated as the same); and your username should be something you're comfortable with being publicly visible. Once you've entered a username that's available, look for a "Save" or "Update" button to confirm your change.

On the Pinterest mobile app, follow similar steps: tap your profile icon at the bottom of the screen, tap the gear icon for settings, select "Account," find your username field, and make your update. After saving, it may take a few minutes for the change to appear across all Pinterest pages and in search results, though it typically updates within seconds.

Practical takeaway: Have your new username ready before you start the process, and verify that it's available by checking if Pinterest accepts it during the change process.

What Happens to Your Account When You Change Your Username

One of the most important things to understand about changing your Pinterest username is what does and doesn't change when you make this update. Your actual account and all its contents remain completely intact. All of your pins, boards, followers, and following list stay exactly as they were before the username change.

Your profile URL will update to reflect your new username. For example, if your old username was "GardenLover2019" and you change it to "UrbanGardenTips," your profile URL changes from pinterest.com/GardenLover2019 to pinterest.com/UrbanGardenTips. Any links you previously shared that pointed to your old profile URL will no longer work, as Pinterest doesn't automatically redirect the old URL to the new one. If you've shared your Pinterest profile link on other websites, social media, or business cards, you'll need to update those links manually.

People who follow your account will continue to follow you without any interruption. They don't need to re-follow you or take any action on their end. When they visit your profile, they'll see your new username, but their follow status remains unchanged. The same applies to people you follow—changing your username doesn't affect those relationships.

Your pins and boards remain associated with your account regardless of your username. Anyone who has saved or repinned your content will still see those pins attributed to you, though they'll see your new username displayed. Comments you've made on other pins will also still show your new username when viewed by others.

One practical consideration: if you've built recognition under your old username, changing it might cause some people to not recognize your new profile if they encounter you on Pinterest. For business accounts especially, changing usernames can affect brand recognition. However, if you've updated your display name and profile description, people can still identify you through these fields even if your username is different.

Practical takeaway: If you're changing your username and you've promoted your Pinterest profile elsewhere online, update those external links to your new profile URL so people can still find you.

Choosing the Right New Username for Your Needs

Selecting your new Pinterest username requires thinking about how you use the platform and what you want your username to communicate. Different users have different priorities when it comes to their username choice, whether that's personal expression, business branding, searchability, or simplicity.

For personal accounts focused on hobbies and interests, consider whether your username reflects what you pin about. If you primarily share recipes, craft projects, or home design ideas, you might choose a username that hints at these interests. For example, someone who pins photography inspiration might choose a username like "PhotoMuse" or "LensCollector." Personal usernames can be more creative and playful since they're primarily for individual enjoyment.

For business accounts, your username strategy should align with your broader branding. If you have a business name, try to use that same name or a close variation as your Pinterest username for consistency across platforms. This makes it easier for customers or clients to find you if they know your business name. Business usernames should be professional, easy to spell, and reflective of what your business offers. If your business name is already taken on Pinterest, consider adding a relevant descriptor, such as changing "JanePhotography" to "JanePhotographyStudio" if the first option is unavailable.

Consider searchability when choosing your new username. If you use keywords related to your niche or interests in your username, it may help people find you through Pinterest search. For instance, a username like "SustainableFashion" or "VeganRecipeIdeas" tells people immediately what your account focuses on. However, this approach means if your interests change, your username might become less relevant.

Technical considerations for your username: keep it reasonably short so it's easy to type and remember; avoid numbers unless they're meaningful (like a year); check whether you want to use this username on other platforms too, for consistency across your online presence; and test how your username looks and feels—say it out loud and see if it sounds right to you.

Practical takeaway: Write down 3-5 username options you like, check their availability on Pinterest, and choose the one that best represents how you use the platform and what you want to communicate to others.

Important Considerations and Potential Limitations

While changing your Pinterest username is generally straightforward, several factors and limitations are worth understanding before you make your change. Pinterest does impose certain restrictions on username changes to protect both users and the platform's integrity.
