Learn How Your Body Makes Estrogen

What Is Estrogen and Why Your Body Makes It

Estrogen is a hormone—a chemical messenger that your body produces to control various functions. Your body makes several types of estrogen, with the most common being estradiol, estrone, and estriol. These hormones travel through your bloodstream and attach to cells throughout your body, telling them how to behave and develop.

Both men and women produce estrogen, though women typically produce higher amounts. In women, estrogen plays a major role in reproductive health, bone strength, heart function, and brain health. Men produce smaller amounts of estrogen, which also supports bone health and sexual function. The amount of estrogen your body makes changes throughout your life based on your age, reproductive stage, and overall health.

Your body doesn't just make one burst of estrogen and stop. Instead, it continuously produces this hormone in a carefully timed pattern. This production follows a monthly cycle in women of reproductive age and changes during menopause. Understanding how your body makes estrogen can help you recognize normal changes and identify when something might need medical attention.

The process of making estrogen involves several organs working together—primarily your ovaries if you're a woman, or your adrenal glands and fat tissue if you're a man. These organs receive signals from your brain, which tells them when to produce more or less estrogen based on what your body needs.

• Estrogen affects your reproductive system, bones, heart, brain, and mood
• Both men and women make estrogen, but in different amounts
• Your body produces estrogen continuously throughout your life
• Multiple organs work together in the estrogen production process

Practical Takeaway: Recognizing that estrogen production is a normal, ongoing process helps you understand changes in your body throughout different life stages. If you notice unusual symptoms related to hormonal changes, tracking when they occur can provide useful information to share with your healthcare provider.

The Hormonal Control System Behind Estrogen Production

Your brain controls estrogen production through a communication system called the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis (or HPO axis in women). This system works like a three-part messaging network. The hypothalamus, a small region at the base of your brain, acts as the control center. It monitors hormone levels and sends chemical signals to the pituitary gland, a pea-sized gland also in your brain.

The pituitary gland responds to these signals by releasing two key hormones: follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). These hormones travel through your bloodstream to your ovaries (in women) or influence estrogen production in other ways (in men). In women, FSH stimulates the ovaries to grow follicles—tiny sacs containing eggs. As these follicles develop, they produce increasing amounts of estrogen.

This system uses feedback loops, meaning your body constantly checks estrogen levels and adjusts production accordingly. When estrogen levels get high enough, this sends a signal back to your brain to reduce FSH and LH production, which then slows estrogen production. When estrogen levels drop, your brain produces more FSH and LH to stimulate the ovaries to make more estrogen. This balance keeps your hormone levels stable.

This control system is remarkably sensitive and can be affected by stress, sleep, exercise, nutrition, and body weight. During certain times—like intense exercise or significant stress—your hypothalamus may produce fewer hormones, which can temporarily reduce estrogen production. Similarly, being significantly underweight or overweight can disrupt this delicate balance.

• Your hypothalamus acts as the control center for estrogen production
• The pituitary gland releases FSH and LH in response to hypothalamus signals
• Feedback loops keep estrogen levels balanced
• Stress, sleep, exercise, and nutrition affect this control system

Practical Takeaway: Since stress, sleep, and lifestyle factors influence your hormonal control system, maintaining consistent sleep schedules, managing stress, and exercising regularly may help support stable estrogen production. Tracking how life stressors affect your symptoms can reveal patterns worth discussing with your doctor.

Where Estrogen Is Made: The Role of Different Organs

In women, the ovaries are the primary estrogen-producing organs. These almond-sized glands sit on either side of the uterus and contain thousands of follicles. Each follicle is lined with cells that produce estrogen. During a woman's reproductive years, the ovaries produce the majority of circulating estrogen, particularly estradiol. As women age and approach menopause, ovarian estrogen production gradually declines until menopause occurs, when the ovaries produce very little estrogen.

However, the ovaries aren't the only estrogen-producing sites in women. Fat tissue produces a form of estrogen called estrone. This becomes increasingly important after menopause, when the ovaries have stopped producing significant estrogen. This is why body weight can influence estrogen levels—more fat tissue means more estrogen production. The adrenal glands, small glands sitting on top of your kidneys, also produce small amounts of hormones that the body converts into estrogen.

In men, estrogen production works differently. Men don't have ovaries, so they produce estrogen primarily through the conversion of testosterone in fat tissue and other tissues throughout the body. An enzyme called aromatase performs this conversion. Men's adrenal glands also produce small amounts of precursor hormones that convert to estrogen. This means men produce significantly less estrogen than women, but the hormone still plays an important role in male health.

The liver also plays a crucial role in estrogen regulation, though it doesn't make estrogen. The liver processes and breaks down estrogen that has already been used by the body, preparing it for elimination through bile. If liver function is impaired, estrogen may accumulate to higher-than-normal levels. This is why liver health influences overall estrogen balance.

• Ovaries are the main estrogen source in women during reproductive years
• Fat tissue produces estrogen in both men and women
• Adrenal glands produce estrogen precursors
• The liver regulates estrogen by breaking it down for elimination
• Men produce estrogen through testosterone conversion, primarily in fat tissue

Practical Takeaway: Understanding that multiple organs contribute to estrogen production explains why overall health matters—maintaining healthy liver function, managing weight, and supporting adrenal gland health through stress management all influence your hormonal balance. If you're concerned about estrogen levels, your healthcare provider can evaluate function of these multiple systems.

The Monthly Cycle of Estrogen Production in Women

In women of reproductive age, estrogen production follows a monthly pattern called the menstrual cycle. This cycle typically lasts about 28 days, though anywhere from 21 to 35 days is considered normal. The cycle has four main phases, and estrogen levels change dramatically throughout each phase.

The menstrual phase (days 1-5) begins when estrogen and progesterone levels are at their lowest. This triggers the uterine lining to shed, resulting in bleeding. During this time, your pituitary gland begins releasing FSH to stimulate new follicles in the ovaries. As follicles grow during the follicular phase (days 1-13), they produce increasing amounts of estrogen. By day 12 or 13, estrogen levels reach a peak. This peak triggers a sudden surge in LH, which causes ovulation—the release of an egg from the ovary.

After ovulation, the luteal phase begins (days 14-28). During this phase, the empty follicle transforms into a structure called the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone and smaller amounts of estrogen. Estrogen levels during this phase are lower than during the follicular phase but higher than during menstruation. Many women experience symptoms during the luteal phase related to changing hormone levels, including mood changes, bloating, and food cravings. These symptoms are normal and related to the natural hormone fluctuations.

This monthly cycle repeats from puberty until menopause, which typically occurs around
