Practical Takeaway: Before you start cleaning your sneakers, review the material composition of your shoes. Different fabrics require different care approaches, and using the wrong method could damage your footwear. This guide helps you match the right cleaning technique to your shoe's specific material.

Understanding Your Sneaker Materials and Their Care Needs

New Balance manufactures sneakers using various materials, each with distinct care requirements. The most common materials include canvas, leather, suede, mesh, and synthetic rubber compounds. Understanding what your shoes are made from is the first step toward proper maintenance. Canvas shoes, for example, are relatively durable and can withstand more aggressive cleaning, while suede requires gentle handling to maintain its texture and appearance.

Canvas is a cotton-based fabric used in many casual and retro-style New Balance sneakers. Canvas can tolerate water-based cleaning and even gentle scrubbing with a soft brush. The material dries relatively quickly, which makes cleaning straightforward. However, canvas can absorb water and moisture, so it's important to dry shoes properly to prevent mildew and odor development.

Leather appears on many New Balance models, particularly those designed for basketball or other performance activities. Leather requires more delicate care than canvas. It should never be soaked in water, as excessive moisture can cause the material to become brittle and crack. Instead, leather should be wiped with a damp cloth and then dried naturally away from direct heat sources. The guide explains that leather can also benefit from occasional conditioning to maintain flexibility and prevent cracking.

Mesh is a breathable fabric commonly found in running and training shoes. Mesh is durable and can handle cleaning, but the material has a looser weave than canvas, making it prone to snagging. The care guide recommends using a soft brush and avoiding harsh scrubbing on mesh areas. Mesh shoes also tend to accumulate dirt in their open weave, requiring thorough but gentle cleaning.

Suede and nubuck are premium materials that appear on higher-end New Balance models. These materials have a soft, velvety texture that's easily damaged by water and rough handling. Suede shoes should be cleaned with specialized suede brushes and erasers rather than traditional washing methods. The guide explains that waterproofing treatments can help protect suede shoes from moisture damage.

Practical Takeaway: Check your shoe's tag or care label to identify the primary materials used. Keep this information in mind when selecting cleaning products and methods. Using material-appropriate care techniques can double or triple the lifespan of your sneakers compared to using incorrect methods.

Step-by-Step Cleaning Procedures for Different Shoe Types

The New Balance care guide provides detailed cleaning instructions tailored to different sneaker types. For canvas and synthetic shoes, the basic cleaning process involves removing surface dirt first, then cleaning with mild soap and water. This method works well for everyday sneakers that need routine maintenance after regular wear.

To clean canvas or synthetic sneakers, start by removing loose dirt and debris. You can tap the shoes together outdoors or use a soft brush to knock away surface dust and mud. Next, prepare a cleaning solution using lukewarm water and a small amount of mild dish soap or laundry detergent. Dip a soft brush or cloth into the solution and gently scrub the shoe's surface, paying special attention to stained or soiled areas. Use a separate damp cloth with plain water to rinse away the soap residue. Finally, stuff the shoes with newspaper or paper towels to absorb moisture and help them retain their shape while drying at room temperature.

For leather shoes, the guide recommends a more conservative approach. Wipe the surface with a slightly damp cloth to remove surface dirt. For stubborn stains, use a cloth barely dampened with the mild soap solution, and avoid saturating the leather. Wipe immediately with a dry cloth and allow the shoes to air dry naturally. Never place leather shoes near direct heat sources like radiators or hair dryers, as this can cause the material to crack and shrink.

Mesh shoes require gentle treatment to prevent snags and tears. Use a soft-bristled brush rather than abrasive scrubbing pads. Work in circular motions rather than back-and-forth strokes, as back-and-forth motions are more likely to snag the mesh fibers. The cleaning solution and rinsing process are similar to canvas shoes, but patience is essential to avoid damaging the delicate material.

For suede shoes, the guide explains that water-based cleaning should be avoided whenever possible. Instead, use a suede brush or eraser specifically designed for this material. These tools can remove surface dirt and light stains without introducing moisture. For more difficult stains, suede cleaning products formulated specifically for the material are available at shoe care retailers. These products are more effective than homemade solutions for preserving suede's texture and appearance.

Practical Takeaway: Always start with the gentlest cleaning method appropriate for your shoe material. You can always escalate to stronger cleaning techniques if gentle methods don't work, but you can't undo damage from overly aggressive cleaning. Test any new cleaning product on a hidden area of your shoe first to ensure it won't cause discoloration.

Addressing Common Stains and Damage Issues

Sneakers encounter various types of stains and damage during regular wear. The New Balance care guide explains how to address common problems like grass stains, salt marks, scuff marks, and mud. Understanding what caused the stain helps determine the best treatment approach, and treating stains promptly prevents them from becoming permanent.

Grass stains are particularly common on canvas and mesh sneakers. These stains often contain chlorophyll and natural plant pigments that can set if exposed to heat. For fresh grass stains, the guide recommends immediate treatment with a soft brush and mild soap solution. Gently scrub the stained area before the stain dries completely. For set-in stains, a slightly stronger approach using rubbing alcohol applied with a cloth can help break down the pigment. Always test this method on a hidden area first, as alcohol can affect certain dyes.

Salt stains appear when sneakers are exposed to road salt during winter months or salt spray near ocean environments. These white, crusty marks form when salt crystallizes on the shoe's surface. Salt stains can actually damage materials over time by drawing moisture into the fabric. The guide explains that these stains should be removed promptly by wiping with a damp cloth. For stubborn salt marks, a cloth dampened with a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar can dissolve the crystallized salt without damaging most shoe materials.

Scuff marks and creasing are inevitable with regular sneaker wear. While minor scuffs don't affect shoe function, they can impact appearance. The guide provides information about covering minor scuffs using touch-up markers or pens made for sneakers. These products come in various colors to match different shoe materials. For leather shoes, scuff marks can sometimes be minimized by conditioning the leather, which can help the material's natural flexibility restore some smoothness to the surface.
