The Alabama Department of Public Safety issues driver licenses and handles replacements. Replacements fall into different categories based on why you need a new license. Understanding which category applies to your situation helps you know what steps to take next.

A standard replacement is needed when your license is lost, stolen, or damaged. You may also need a replacement if your name changes due to marriage, divorce, or court order. Another reason for replacement is if your license was suspended or revoked and you've completed all requirements to restore it. Additionally, Alabama allows replacements when you want to update information like your address without waiting for your license to expire.

The state also issues replacements for licenses that show wear and tear from normal use. If your license is faded, cracked, or difficult to read, you can request a replacement. This protects you from having identification that authorities might question when you're stopped or when using it for other purposes.

Each replacement type may have different requirements and processing steps. Some replacements can be handled through the mail, while others require an in-person visit to a Driver License Examining Station. Knowing your specific situation helps you understand what information to gather and what to expect during the process.

Takeaway: Identify which replacement category matches your situation before gathering documents or visiting a station.

Documents You'll Need for a Replacement License

Alabama requires specific documents to process any driver license replacement. Having the right documents ready speeds up the process and prevents delays. The documents fall into a few main categories: proof of identity, proof of residency, and sometimes additional paperwork depending on your situation.

For proof of identity, you'll need to bring a valid, government-issued photo ID. Acceptable documents include a current passport, military ID, state ID card, or your Social Security card. If you're replacing a lost or stolen license, you can use your Social Security card along with another form of ID that shows your name. A birth certificate also works as proof of identity in many cases.

Proof of residency shows where you currently live in Alabama. Acceptable documents include utility bills (electricity, gas, water), lease agreements, mortgage statements, property tax records, or vehicle registration. The document should have your name and current address and be dated within the last 60 days. If you recently moved, bring documentation from your previous address along with current address proof.

If you're replacing a license because of a name change, you'll need to provide the document that authorized the name change. This could be a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. Make sure you bring the original document or a certified copy.

For certain replacements, like restoring a suspended license, you may need additional paperwork. This could include proof that you've paid fines, completed a required course, or met other conditions set by the state. Contact your local Driver License Examining Station or check the Alabama Department of Public Safety website to confirm what you need for your specific situation.

Takeaway: Gather your documents before visiting a station to avoid making multiple trips.

How to Replace Your License Through the Mail

Alabama allows certain replacements to be handled by mail, which means you don't have to visit a station in person. Mail replacement works well for address changes, corrections to information on your license, or standard replacements when your license isn't damaged or suspended. However, not all replacement types qualify for mail processing.

To replace your license by mail, you'll start by filling out the correct form. The form you need depends on your situation—whether it's a standard replacement, an address change, or a correction. You can obtain forms from the Alabama Department of Public Safety website or by visiting a Driver License Examining Station.

Once you have the form, gather your supporting documents. For a mail replacement, you'll typically need to send a copy of your current license (front and back), proof of residency, and any documents related to your reason for replacement. Never send original documents through the mail—always send copies. The Alabama Department of Public Safety will not return your documents, so keep originals for your records.

Include a check or money order for the replacement fee. As of recent years, Alabama charges a fee for license replacements that varies depending on the type of replacement and how long your new license will be valid. Check the current fee on the state's website, as fees can change. Make sure your payment information is correct to avoid delays.

Mail your completed form, copies of documents, and payment to the address provided on the form or the Department of Public Safety website. Include a return address so the state can send your new license back to you. Processing time for mail replacements typically takes 2-4 weeks, though it may take longer during busy periods. Once your new license is mailed to you, keep it in a safe place to avoid needing another replacement.

Takeaway: Send copies, not originals, and include the correct payment to prevent delays in receiving your replacement license.

Visiting a Driver License Examining Station in Person

Some driver license replacements require an in-person visit to a Driver License Examining Station. This applies when your license was suspended, revoked, or when you need to pass a vision test or take a new photo. In-person visits also apply for certain name changes or address updates where the mail process isn't available for your situation.

To prepare for your visit, first find the Driver License Examining Station nearest to you. Alabama has stations located throughout the state in various cities and counties. You can find the list of stations and their hours on the Alabama Department of Public Safety website. Hours vary by location, and some stations have reduced hours on certain days, so check before you go.

Bring all required documents in their original form. Unlike mail replacement, you need to show originals for proof of identity and residency. If you have multiple forms of ID, bring them all. Staff at the station will verify your documents and may ask questions about the information on your application.

When you arrive at the station, you'll likely wait in line before speaking with staff. The wait time varies depending on how busy the station is. Some stations are busier on certain days of the week. You can often call ahead to ask about wait times, which helps you plan your visit.

During your appointment with the staff member, they will review your documents, verify your information, and take a new photo for your license. If you're replacing a license due to a suspension or revocation, the staff will confirm that any required conditions have been met. You'll sign your new license application, and they'll tell you when to expect your new license to arrive. Most in-person replacements take 7-14 days to arrive by mail after your visit to the station.

Takeaway: Call ahead to confirm hours and bring original documents to avoid extra trips to the station.

Costs and Fees for Driver License Replacement

Understanding the cost of a driver license replacement helps you prepare the correct payment when you submit your request. Alabama charges fees for replacements, and the amount depends on how long your new license will be valid and the reason for replacement.

Standard replacements for lost, stolen, or damaged licenses typically cost less than a full renewal with a longer validity period. If you're replacing a license that still has several years before expiration, you may pay a lower fee than if you're replacing it and extending the validity to a full renewal term. A replacement license that extends your validity to 8 years from the issue date generally costs more than a replacement that only covers the remaining time on your current license.

Address changes and corrections to license information may have their own fee structure, which is often lower than standard replacements. Some corrections to errors the state made might be done at no charge, though you should confirm this with the Department of Public Safety.

If you're replacing a license due to suspension or revocation, there may be additional fees beyond the standard replacement cost. These could include restoration fees or fees for reinstating your driving privileges. The cost varies based on why your license was suspended or revoked and what conditions you needed to meet.

Payment methods accepted include checks, money orders, and credit or debit cards, depending on whether you're applying by mail or in person. For mail applications, you typically send a check or money order. For in-person visits
