Free Guide to Understanding Hand Burning Sensations

What Causes Hand Burning Sensations

Hand burning sensations describe a feeling of heat, tingling, or pain in your hands that can range from mild to severe. This sensation often feels like your skin is on fire or experiencing pins-and-needles, even when your hands are at normal temperature. Understanding what triggers these feelings is the first step toward managing them.

Multiple conditions can cause hand burning. Nerve-related issues are among the most common. Peripheral neuropathy, which affects nerves in your hands and feet, causes about 20 million Americans to experience burning or tingling sensations. This condition develops when nerves that carry signals between your brain and hands become damaged or irritated.

Circulation problems represent another major cause. When blood flow to your hands decreases, your tissues don't receive enough oxygen, creating a burning sensation. Raynaud's phenomenon, affecting roughly 5% of the U.S. population, causes blood vessels in fingers to narrow in response to cold or stress, resulting in color changes and burning feelings.

Chemical or environmental exposures can also trigger hand burning. Contact with certain cleaning products, pesticides, or industrial chemicals may irritate skin or nerves. Even prolonged exposure to cold water or temperatures can create burning sensations as hands warm up.

Other contributors include autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, hormonal changes during menopause or thyroid disorders, allergic reactions, infections, or skin conditions such as eczema. Diabetes affects blood sugar levels and nerve function, making hand burning a common symptom for roughly 50% of people with diabetes over time.

Practical takeaway: Notice when your hand burning occurs—during specific activities, in certain temperatures, or after particular exposures. Keeping a simple log of when symptoms happen and what you were doing helps you and your doctor identify patterns and possible causes.

Nerve-Related Causes of Hand Burning

Nerves transmit sensation from your hands to your brain and movement signals back. When these nerves malfunction, burning is often the first sign something requires attention. Peripheral neuropathy is the most common nerve-related cause of hand burning sensations.

Peripheral neuropathy develops when peripheral nerves—those outside your brain and spinal cord—become damaged. This damage can occur gradually or suddenly, depending on the cause. Symptoms typically start in your feet and hands, which is why hand burning often appears as one of the early warning signs.

Diabetes represents the leading preventable cause of neuropathy in the United States. High blood sugar levels damage nerve fibers over months or years. People with diabetes should monitor their blood sugar because maintaining healthy levels significantly reduces neuropathy risk. Studies show that keeping blood sugar within target ranges reduces neuropathy development by up to 60%.

Infections can also damage nerves and cause burning hands. Lyme disease, spread by tick bites, sometimes produces burning sensations weeks or months after infection. Shingles, caused by the chickenpox virus reactivating, creates intense burning pain, typically on one side of the body but sometimes affecting hands.

Vitamin deficiencies, particularly B vitamins, damage nerves over time. Vitamin B12 deficiency, found in about 6% of people under 60 and 20% over 60, can cause burning hands along with other neurological symptoms. Alcoholism contributes to both B vitamin deficiency and direct nerve damage, making it a significant risk factor for neuropathy.

Repetitive motion injuries compress nerves in your hands and wrists. Carpal tunnel syndrome affects over 4 million Americans annually. This condition develops when the median nerve becomes compressed in the wrist, causing burning, tingling, and weakness. People who type, perform assembly work, or use vibrating tools face higher risk.

Practical takeaway: If hand burning is accompanied by weakness, numbness, or problems with fine motor tasks like buttoning clothing, scheduling an evaluation with your healthcare provider helps identify nerve involvement early, when treatment options are most effective.

Circulation and Temperature-Related Causes

Your hands rely on steady blood flow to maintain proper temperature and function. When circulation decreases or blood vessels react abnormally to temperature changes, burning sensations often result. Understanding circulation-related causes helps you recognize which situations trigger your symptoms.

Raynaud's phenomenon affects blood vessel response to cold and stress. During an episode, small arteries in your fingers suddenly narrow, restricting blood flow. Your fingers may turn white, then blue, then red as circulation returns. During the rewarming phase, many people experience intense burning and tingling. This condition is more common in women than men, affecting roughly 3-5% of the general population.

Raynaud's can occur on its own (primary Raynaud's) or alongside other conditions like lupus or scleroderma (secondary Raynaud's). People with primary Raynaud's typically experience milder symptoms and have a better outlook. Secondary Raynaud's often requires more aggressive management because the underlying condition affects multiple body systems.

Hypothyroidism slows your metabolism and circulation, sometimes causing hand burning and cold sensitivity. The thyroid gland regulates how quickly your body uses energy. When thyroid hormone production declines, affecting roughly 5% of Americans, circulation may decrease. Hypothyroidism is particularly common in older adults, present in 10% of people over 65.

Anemia reduces the amount of oxygen-carrying hemoglobin in your blood. With fewer red blood cells available, tissues receive less oxygen, creating burning sensations in hands and feet. Approximately 3.2 million Americans have anemia. Iron deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency, and chronic diseases like kidney disease commonly cause anemia.

Cold exposure triggers burning in people with normal circulation as well. When hands are repeatedly exposed to cold water or environments, upon rewarming, burning and tingling often develop. This occurs because nerves become irritated during the temperature change process. Workers in cold environments, like refrigeration workers or those in northern climates, frequently experience this pattern.

Practical takeaway: If cold or stress clearly triggers your symptoms, focus on prevention through gloves, stress management, and gradually warming hands rather than rapid temperature changes. Avoid plunging cold hands into hot water, as the sudden shift intensifies burning sensations.

Medical Conditions Associated With Hand Burning

Several medical conditions have hand burning as a recognized symptom. Understanding these conditions and their connection to hand sensations helps you provide more complete information to healthcare providers.

Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition affecting roughly 1.3 million Americans, causes the immune system to attack joint linings. As joints become inflamed, they swell and damage surrounding nerves and blood vessels. This damage produces burning pain alongside the more typical joint pain and swelling. Rheumatoid arthritis appears three times more frequently in women than men.

Lupus, another autoimmune condition affecting approximately 1.5 million Americans, triggers inflammation throughout the body. Nerve inflammation from lupus, called lupus neuropathy, creates burning sensations in hands and feet. Women account for about 90% of lupus cases, typically appearing during childbearing years.

Fibromyalgia causes widespread muscle and joint pain along with burning sensations. This condition affects roughly 4 million Americans, about 75-90% of whom are women. People with fibromyalgia experience heightened pain sensitivity, meaning normal sensations feel more intense than they would for others.

Thyroid disorders beyond hypothyroidism can cause hand burning. Hyperthyroidism, when the thyroid produces excess hormone, speeds metabolism and can cause tremors, anxiety, and burning sensations. Graves' disease, the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, affects about 1.2% of Americans.

Multiple sclerosis affects the protective covering of nerve fibers throughout the nervous system. Demyelination, the loss of this protective coating, disrupts nerve signals and causes burning, tingling, and numbness. MS affects about 2.3 million people worldwide, with roughly 200,000 in the United States. Women receive MS diagnoses about twice as often as men.

Kidney disease affects circulation and electrolyte balance. When kidneys don't function properly, waste and fluid accumulate, affecting nerves and causing burning sensations. Approximately 37 million
