What Connecticut Real ID Is and Why It Matters

Connecticut Real ID is a form of identification that meets federal security standards set by the Department of Homeland Security. Unlike a standard driver's license, a Real ID card has special security features and can be used for specific purposes that regular licenses cannot.

Since May 7, 2025, a Real ID or other federally acceptable form of identification is required to board domestic flights within the United States. This means if you plan to fly from Connecticut airports like Bradley International Airport or Tweed New Haven Airport, you will need either a Real ID, a passport, a military ID, or another document that meets federal standards. Without one of these documents, you will not be permitted to pass through airport security screening.

Connecticut began issuing Real IDs in 2017. As of 2024, the state has issued over 2 million Real IDs to residents. The Real ID standard was created after the September 11 attacks to establish consistent security features across state-issued IDs and make it harder to create fraudulent documents. Each state that issues Real IDs must follow the same federal requirements for security features, background checks, and document verification.

The Real ID card itself looks similar to a standard Connecticut driver's license but includes a gold star in the upper right corner. This star indicates the card meets federal standards. You can use a Real ID for domestic air travel, entry to federal buildings, and military bases. However, it is not required for other activities like driving, shopping, or everyday identification in Connecticut.

Practical Takeaway: If you fly domestically or need to enter federal buildings, learning about Real ID requirements helps you understand what document options are available and what the differences are between a standard license and a Real ID.

Documents You Will Need to Bring to the DMV

Connecticut's Department of Motor Vehicles has specific document requirements for obtaining or renewing a Real ID. These requirements exist to verify your identity and citizenship. Understanding what documents you need before you visit prevents delays and extra trips.

First, you need to prove your identity. The DMV accepts documents such as a valid passport, passport card, birth certificate, or existing driver's license. If you are using a birth certificate, it must be a certified copy from the state vital records office, not a photocopy from a hospital. A certified birth certificate has an official seal and is recognized as proof of identity by federal standards.

Second, you must prove your Social Security number. You can bring your Social Security card, a W-2 form, a 1099 form, or a pay stub that shows your full Social Security number. If you do not have a Social Security number, the DMV has procedures to help you obtain one before applying for Real ID.

Third, you need to prove your Connecticut residency. The DMV accepts current utility bills, lease agreements, mortgage statements, property tax bills, or government correspondence. The document must show your current address and be dated within the last 60 days. A utility bill in your name from Eversource Energy, United Illuminating, or a water company all work as proof of residency. You need at least one document that shows your name and current address.

Fourth, if your name has changed due to marriage, divorce, or legal name change, bring documentation of that change. This could be a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order for legal name change. These documents must be certified copies.

Bring the originals of these documents, not photocopies, to your DMV appointment. The DMV staff will review them and make copies for your file. You should also bring your current driver's license or state ID if you have one.

Practical Takeaway: Gather your documents before visiting the DMV to avoid delays. Make a checklist: identity document (passport or birth certificate), Social Security verification, proof of residency (utility bill or lease), and any name change documents if applicable.

The Process of Getting Real ID at Connecticut DMV Locations

The process of obtaining a Real ID in Connecticut involves several steps. Understanding each step helps you prepare and know what to expect during your visit.

The first step is scheduling an appointment. Connecticut DMV recommends scheduling appointments online through the state's website or calling the DMV appointment line. Waiting times at DMV offices vary by location and time of day. Some locations in urban areas like Hartford, New Haven, or Stamford may have longer waits than smaller branch offices in rural areas. By scheduling an appointment, you reduce your wait time significantly. Walk-in appointments are sometimes available but may mean longer waits. As of 2024, average appointment wait times for a Real ID appointment were 15 to 30 minutes after your scheduled time.

The second step is arriving at your DMV office with all required documents. You should arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to allow time for parking and finding the office. Bring all original documents listed in the previous section. The DMV office will have specific hours of operation. Most DMV branch offices in Connecticut are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with some locations open certain Saturdays.

The third step is meeting with a DMV representative. The representative will ask you to present your documents and verify your identity. They will review your birth certificate or passport to confirm you are a U.S. citizen. They will check your Social Security number and run a background check to ensure you meet Connecticut driver's license requirements. This process takes about 10 to 15 minutes. You will answer questions about your residency, your name, and your address. The representative may ask clarifying questions about any documents you provide.

The fourth step is having your photo taken. You will sit for an official photo that will appear on your Real ID card. The photo must meet specific requirements: you must face the camera directly, your face must be clearly visible, and you cannot wear hats or sunglasses. Medical reasons for religious head coverings may be accommodated. The photo will be taken digitally and stored in the DMV system.

The fifth step is paying the fee. Connecticut charges $36 for a Real ID driver's license. If you are renewing an existing license, the cost remains the same. Payment is typically made by cash, debit card, or credit card. Some DMV offices may accept checks, but card payment is most common and fastest.

The final step is receiving your temporary Real ID and waiting for your permanent card. The DMV will provide you with a temporary paper document that shows you have been issued a Real ID. This temporary document can be used for domestic air travel immediately. Your physical Real ID card will arrive by mail within 7 to 10 business days. The card is mailed to your address on file at the DMV.

Practical Takeaway: Schedule your DMV appointment online, bring all original documents, and expect the process to take 30 to 45 minutes total from arrival to completion.

Real ID Renewal and When Your Card Expires

Real ID cards have expiration dates, just like standard driver's licenses. Connecticut Real IDs are valid for different lengths of time depending on your age, similar to regular licenses.

For drivers under 65 years old, a Real ID is valid for 8 years from the issue date. For drivers 65 years old and older, a Real ID is valid for 5 years from the issue date. This means if you received your Real ID in 2020 and you are under 65, your card will not expire until 2028. You should renew your Real ID approximately 60 days before the expiration date printed on your card.

Connecticut allows you to renew your Real ID in several ways. You can renew online through the DMV website if you meet certain requirements. Online renewal is available if your license is not expired or has been expired for less than 2 years, you have no address changes, and you have no name changes. Online renewal costs $36 and takes about 7 to 10 business days for the new card to arrive by mail.

You can also renew in person at a DMV office. In-person renewal may be required if your license is expired for more than 2 years, if you have changed your address, or if you have changed your name. In-person renewal follows the same process as obtaining a new Real ID, including document verification and a new photo. In-person renewal takes about 30 to 45 minutes and costs $36.
