Understanding Ticks and the Diseases They Carry

Ticks are small parasitic arachnids that feed on the blood of animals and humans. Unlike insects, ticks have eight legs and belong to the same family as spiders and mites. There are approximately 900 species of ticks worldwide, but only a few hundred species are found in North America. The most common disease-carrying ticks in the United States are the blacklegged tick (also called the deer tick), the American dog tick, and the lone star tick.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), tick-borne illnesses have more than tripled over the past two decades. In 2022 alone, the CDC received reports of over 54,000 cases of Lyme disease, which is transmitted primarily by blacklegged ticks. Other serious tick-borne diseases include Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis. Tick season typically runs from spring through fall, though ticks can be active during milder winter months in some regions.

Ticks go through four life stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. The nymph stage is particularly concerning because these young ticks are about the size of a poppy seed and easily go unnoticed on skin. A single tick can carry multiple pathogens, meaning one bite could potentially transmit several diseases at once. Ticks typically need to be attached for 24 to 48 hours before transmitting Lyme disease, though some diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever may be transmitted more quickly.

Understanding tick behavior helps with prevention. Ticks do not jump or fly—they climb onto hosts by waiting on grass, shrubs, and leaf litter in what is called "questing" behavior. They detect hosts through body heat, moisture, and vibrations. Ticks thrive in humid environments and are most active during warm months. Areas with high deer and rodent populations tend to have higher tick concentrations, as these animals are common tick hosts.

Practical takeaway: Learn the appearance of ticks found in your region and the primary diseases they carry. This knowledge helps you take appropriate precautions and recognize symptoms quickly if an illness develops.

Personal Protection Strategies and Clothing Choices

The most effective tick prevention strategy combines proper clothing, insect repellent use, and environmental awareness. When spending time in areas where ticks are present—such as wooded areas, tall grass, or brush—wearing appropriate clothing creates a physical barrier that makes it harder for ticks to reach your skin. The CDC recommends wearing light-colored clothing, which makes ticks more visible and easier to spot before they attach.

Specific clothing recommendations include tucking long pants into socks or boot tops, which creates a barrier that ticks cannot easily cross. Long-sleeved shirts provide additional protection for the arms. While this clothing combination may feel warm during summer months, it significantly reduces tick exposure. For hiking and outdoor activities in heavily wooded areas, consider wearing closed-toe shoes and a hat. Avoid wearing sandals in tick-prone areas, as ticks can easily attach to exposed skin on feet and ankles.

Chemical treatments applied to clothing can provide additional protection. Permethrin is an insecticide approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for treating clothing, gear, and camping equipment. Permethrin is not applied directly to skin—it is sprayed onto clothing according to product instructions and allowed to dry completely before wearing. A single permethrin treatment can remain effective through multiple washings. Studies show that permethrin-treated clothing can reduce tick attachment by 96 to 99 percent. Products containing permethrin are widely available and include pre-treated clothing options and spray bottles for treating your own garments.

Insect repellents applied to skin also provide protection. The EPA recommends repellents containing one of these active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone. DEET concentrations between 20 and 30 percent provide several hours of protection. Picaridin at 20 percent concentration offers similar protection duration. Apply repellent to exposed skin and clothing edges, avoiding your hands, eyes, mouth, and any cuts or irritated skin. Wash off repellent once you come indoors and wash treated clothing.

Practical takeaway: Combine two protection methods when in tick-prone areas: wear long, light-colored pants tucked into socks and a long-sleeved shirt, plus apply an EPA-approved repellent to exposed skin. This layered approach significantly reduces your risk of tick attachment.

Yard and Property Management to Reduce Ticks

Your home landscape can either harbor ticks or discourage them. Tick populations are highest in areas with dense vegetation, high humidity, and plenty of leaf litter where ticks hide and quest for hosts. Creating a less hospitable environment for ticks around your home reduces your exposure risk. One of the most important steps is maintaining a buffer zone between your yard and wooded areas. This buffer should be at least 6 to 9 feet wide and kept clear of brush, high grass, and leaves where ticks congregate.

Regular yard maintenance significantly impacts tick populations. Keeping grass mowed to a height of 3 inches or less removes the shaded, humid environment where ticks thrive. Remove leaf litter, brush, and woodpiles from your yard, as these are ideal tick habitats. Rake leaves regularly during fall months, as this eliminates both ticks and the small rodents they feed on. If you have a compost pile, ensure it is at least 5 feet from your home's foundation and properly maintained, as poorly managed compost can attract rodents that carry ticks.

Addressing wildlife on your property also helps control ticks. Deer and rodents are major tick hosts. Installing deer fencing around garden areas can reduce tick-carrying wildlife on your property. Removing or securing food sources like pet food, garbage, and fallen fruit discourages wildlife visits. If you have pets, ensure they receive veterinary-recommended tick prevention treatments year-round, as pets can bring ticks into your home. Consulting with a local pest control professional about wildlife management options specific to your area may provide additional information about controlling tick-host populations.

Some property owners choose to apply acaricide treatments (tick-killing pesticides) to their yards, typically in late spring and early fall when tick populations are highest. These treatments can reduce tick numbers by 68 to 100 percent, depending on the product and application method. However, chemical treatments have environmental implications and should be considered carefully. Always follow product instructions and safety guidelines if you choose this option. Some communities offer information about integrated pest management approaches that combine multiple strategies with minimal environmental impact.

Practical takeaway: Maintain your yard by mowing regularly, removing leaf litter and brush, creating buffer zones between wooded areas and your home, and managing wildlife attractants. These landscaping practices reduce tick populations without requiring chemical treatments.

Checking for Ticks and Proper Removal Techniques

Regular tick checks are essential, especially after spending time outdoors in tick-prone areas. Ticks can attach to any part of the body, but they tend to migrate to areas where skin is thin or warm. Common attachment sites include the scalp, behind the ears, the neck, armpits, the groin, and behind the knees. When you come inside after outdoor activities, perform a full-body tick check. A shower within two hours of coming indoors may also help wash off ticks that have not yet attached. Putting clothes directly into a hot dryer (not a washer) on high heat for six minutes kills any ticks on clothing.

To perform a thorough tick check, use a hand-held or full-length mirror to inspect your body carefully. Check your entire scalp by running your fingers through your hair. Examine the back of your neck and ears. Check your armpits, groin, and the backs of your knees. Look between your toes and under your toenails. Do not forget to check your upper thighs and the small of your back. Have a family member or partner check areas you cannot easily see, such as your back and the back of your scalp. Children require extra attention since they may not notice ticks and often play in tick-prone areas.

If you find a tick attached to your skin, immediate removal is important. According to CDC guidelines, grasp the tick with tweezers as close to the skin surface as
