Free Guide to Subway Job Opportunities and Requirements

Understanding Subway Employment Basics

Subway, the sandwich restaurant chain, operates thousands of locations across North America and internationally. The company hires workers for various positions throughout their restaurants. Understanding how Subway's employment structure works can help you learn about potential job opportunities at these locations.

Subway restaurants typically employ team members in several role categories. Sandwich artists prepare food and handle customer orders. Cashiers process payments and manage the register. Shift leaders or shift supervisors oversee daily operations and train newer staff members. General managers run individual restaurant locations and handle hiring, scheduling, and business operations. Many stores also have assistant managers who support the general manager.

The chain operates through a franchise model, meaning most Subway locations are independently owned and operated by franchisees rather than directly managed by the corporate office. This matters because each franchise owner sets their own hiring practices, pay rates, and schedules within Subway's general guidelines. A Subway location in one city may have different hiring practices than another location.

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data from 2023, fast-casual food service positions represent one of the largest employment sectors in the United States, with over 3 million people working in food preparation and service roles. Subway, as one of the largest restaurant chains globally, contributes significantly to these employment numbers.

Practical takeaway: Before approaching any Subway location about work opportunities, understand that each restaurant is independently owned. The hiring manager at your local Subway makes decisions about staffing, not a central corporate office.

Positions Available at Subway Locations

Subway locations offer several distinct job positions, each with different responsibilities and requirements. Learning about these positions helps you understand which roles might match your skills and availability.

Sandwich Artist positions form the core of Subway's workforce. These employees work behind the counter, greeting customers, taking orders, building sandwiches according to customer preferences, and packaging food. Sandwich artists also handle basic food prep tasks like slicing vegetables and portioning ingredients. This position typically requires standing for extended periods, working with food safely, and moving quickly during busy times. Most Subway locations hire for this role regularly, as it has relatively high turnover.

Cashier or Customer Service Representative roles focus on processing transactions and managing customer interactions. These employees operate the cash register, handle payment methods including cash and digital payments, answer customer questions, and sometimes handle phone orders or online order pickups. While some locations combine this duty with sandwich preparation, larger or busier locations may have dedicated cashiers.

Shift Leader or Shift Supervisor positions involve overseeing restaurant operations during assigned shifts. These employees train newer staff, ensure food safety standards are met, manage inventory, handle customer complaints, and sometimes make opening or closing procedures. These roles typically pay more than entry-level positions and may include some benefits depending on the franchise owner.

Assistant Manager roles support the General Manager in running the location. Assistant managers may handle scheduling, inventory ordering, staff training, quality control, and customer service issues. These positions often require previous restaurant experience and may offer more structured benefits.

General Manager positions represent the top role at individual locations. Managers handle hiring and firing, financial management, franchise compliance, building maintenance, menu decisions within corporate guidelines, and overall profitability. These positions typically require several years of restaurant management experience.

Practical takeaway: Entry-level positions (Sandwich Artist and Cashier) are most commonly available and require minimal prior experience, making them good starting points for new workers. Supervisor and management positions require demonstrated experience and reliability.

Basic Requirements and Qualifications

While requirements vary between individual Subway franchises, certain standards apply across most locations. Understanding these baseline requirements helps you prepare before approaching a restaurant about work opportunities.

Age requirements are the most universal standard. Subway generally hires workers ages 16 and older for most positions. Some locations may have different requirements for specific tasks. For example, certain states restrict younger workers from operating particular equipment or working during specific hours. The Fair Labor Standards Act sets federal rules about youth employment, and individual states often have stricter requirements.

Legal work authorization is required at all Subway locations. Employees must provide documentation proving their right to work in the United States. This typically involves completing an I-9 form with supporting documents like a passport, driver's license, or Social Security card. No Subway location can legally hire someone without verifying this requirement.

Food safety knowledge matters significantly in food service work. While most Subway locations provide food safety training after hiring, many franchise owners prefer or require candidates to have basic knowledge of food handling principles. Some locations request a food handler's card, which can be obtained through short online courses offered by state health departments. These certifications typically cost $5 to $15 and take one to two hours to complete.

Reliability and availability influence hiring decisions heavily. Franchise owners need staff who show up consistently and on time. Many positions require flexibility with scheduling, including weekends, evenings, and potentially holidays. Some locations actively seek workers available for consistent weekday shifts, while others need primarily weekend help.

Communication skills matter for positions involving customer interaction. Employees should understand basic English to take orders accurately and communicate with customers and coworkers. Non-English speakers may find employment at some locations, but communication barriers can be challenging in a customer-facing food service environment.

Background checks are common but not universal. Many Subway franchises conduct background checks before hiring, particularly for positions involving cash handling or management responsibilities. Practices vary significantly between locations.

Practical takeaway: Before contacting a Subway about employment, ensure you meet age requirements, have work authorization, and can commit to a reliable schedule. These factors matter more than extensive prior experience for entry-level roles.

How to Find and Contact Subway Locations Hiring

Finding Subway locations with current job openings requires checking multiple resources, as hiring practices vary by franchise. No single central hiring process exists for all Subway restaurants.

Subway's official website includes a career page where you can search for openings by location. Visit subway.com and look for a "Careers" or "Jobs" section. This site typically lists positions available at corporate-owned locations and some franchise locations, though not all franchises post openings there. You can usually search by zip code or city to find restaurants near you.

Job listing websites frequently post Subway positions. Sites like Indeed, LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter, and local job boards often have current openings at nearby Subway restaurants. These sites allow you to filter by location, position type, and other factors. You can also set up alerts to receive notifications when new positions are posted.

Contacting Subway locations directly remains one of the most effective methods. Visit nearby Subway restaurants and ask to speak with the manager about current or upcoming openings. Bring a resume if you have one, though many entry-level positions don't require extensive resumes. Simply expressing interest and demonstrating reliability can be effective. The best time to speak with a manager is typically mid-afternoon when the lunch rush has ended, around 2:00 to 4:00 PM.

Social media sometimes provides hiring information. Some franchise owners post about job openings on their restaurant's Facebook page or other social platforms. Following local Subway locations on social media can alert you to hiring needs.

Asking current or former employees about openings provides inside information. If you know anyone working at a nearby Subway, they may know about upcoming positions before they're publicly posted. Employee referrals sometimes result in hiring bonuses, which can incentivize current staff to recommend candidates.

Staffing agencies and temp services occasionally fill Subway positions, particularly for temporary or seasonal work. Local employment agencies may contact you with Subway openings that match your profile.

Practical takeaway: Combine multiple search methods—check the official Subway website, browse job listing sites, and visit nearby restaurants in person. This multi-pronged approach increases your chances of finding available positions.

What to Expect During the Hiring Process

The hiring process at Subway locations typically moves quickly compared to many other employers, though processes vary by franchise. Understanding what to expect helps you prepare appropriately.

Most Subway locations use a simple application process. You may fill out a paper application at the restaurant, complete an online application through Subway's website or a job board, or discuss your background with the manager in person. The application typically asks for basic information: your name, address, phone number, work history, availability, and references. Many franchises prioritize candidates who can start immediately.
