Learn About Adding Authorized Users to Chase

Understanding Authorized Users on Chase Credit Cards

An authorized user is a person you give permission to use your Chase credit card account. When you add an authorized user, Chase issues them their own card linked to your account. The authorized user can make purchases using that card, but the primary account holder—that's you—remains responsible for all charges and payments.

Chase allows you to add multiple authorized users to most of their credit card products. The number of authorized users you can add varies by card type, but many Chase cards permit three to five authorized users per account. Each authorized user receives their own physical card with their name printed on it, making it easy to distinguish between cardholders.

It's important to understand that authorized users do not have legal responsibility for the debt on the account. Only the primary cardholder is legally obligated to pay the bill. However, authorized users can create charges that add to your account balance. This arrangement makes authorized user status useful for family members, trusted employees, or others who need spending power on your account without taking on debt responsibility.

Chase reports authorized user account activity to the credit bureaus. This means that the payment history, credit limits, and account status appear on the authorized user's credit report. For this reason, adding someone as an authorized user can affect their credit score—potentially in a positive way if the account has a good payment history and low balance.

Practical Takeaway: Before adding an authorized user, confirm that you understand you remain fully responsible for all charges they make. The authorized user gets a card and account access, but you handle the bills.

Who Can Become an Authorized User on Your Chase Account

Chase does not publish strict rules limiting who can be an authorized user. In practice, primary cardholders typically add family members, spouses, adult children, or trusted employees. Some people add authorized users to teach younger family members about credit responsibility, while others do so to give a spouse or partner spending access to shared finances.

There is no requirement that an authorized user be related to the primary cardholder. You could add a business associate, friend, or anyone else you trust with card access. However, Chase does require that the authorized user be at least 18 years old (or 16 in some cases for family members—contact Chase for specific rules). You will need to provide the authorized user's name, date of birth, and sometimes their address.

One common reason people add authorized users is to build credit history for someone without an established credit record. When Chase reports the account to credit bureaus, the authorized user's credit report reflects this account's history. Young adults or people new to credit can benefit from being added to an established account with positive payment history and low utilization. This strategy is sometimes called "piggybacking" and can help boost an authorized user's credit score over time.

Some cardholders add authorized users temporarily for specific purposes—such as giving a teenage child a card to use during college, or providing a family member access during a business trip. In these cases, you can later remove the authorized user once they no longer need card access. Chase makes this removal process straightforward.

Business owners sometimes add employees as authorized users to simplify expense management. Instead of handling cash reimbursements or separate corporate cards, the primary cardholder can issue authorized user cards to employees. All charges go to one account, which the business owner then reconciles and pays.

Practical Takeaway: Think carefully about who you add as an authorized user. They will have the ability to spend on your account and their actions will affect your credit report. Only add people you genuinely trust with spending authority.

How to Add an Authorized User to Your Chase Card

Adding an authorized user to a Chase credit card account is a straightforward process. You can do this through several methods: online through your Chase account, by phone with a Chase representative, or in person at a Chase branch. The method you choose depends on your preference and circumstances.

The online method is often the quickest. Log into your Chase account and navigate to the card management section. Look for an option labeled "Add Authorized User" or "Manage Authorized Users." Chase will prompt you to enter the authorized user's personal information. You'll need their full name exactly as you want it to appear on their card, date of birth, and sometimes their address. Some cardholders report that Chase asks for the last four digits of their Social Security number, though this is not always required.

When you call Chase customer service to add an authorized user, a representative will guide you through the process. The phone number appears on the back of your Chase credit card. Have the authorized user's information ready when you call. The representative will verify your identity and account details, then collect the information needed to add the new authorized user. This phone-based method takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes.

After you submit the request, Chase will mail a physical card to the authorized user at the address you provide. Delivery typically takes 7 to 10 business days, though expedited options may be available. The card will arrive in the authorized user's name, and they can begin using it once it arrives. Some newer Chase cards also offer the ability to use the card digitally (through a digital wallet) before the physical card arrives.

Chase does not charge a fee to add an authorized user on most cards. However, some premium or business cards may have different policies, so it's worth checking your specific card's terms. The cost to you is zero, and there's no cost to the authorized user either.

Practical Takeaway: Plan ahead for mail delivery time. If you need the authorized user to have card access quickly, ask Chase about expedited card delivery options or digital card access while the physical card is in transit.

Credit Score and Credit Report Impact of Authorized User Status

When someone becomes an authorized user on your Chase account, that account typically appears on their credit report. This visibility is why authorized user status can influence credit scores. Understanding this impact matters because it affects both you and the person you're adding.

The credit impact on the authorized user can be positive. If your Chase account has a strong payment history—meaning you pay on time each month—this positive history will be reflected on the authorized user's credit report. Similarly, if your account has a low credit utilization ratio (meaning you use a small percentage of your available credit limit), this also appears as positive on their report. For someone building credit or recovering from past credit problems, this can gradually improve their credit score.

However, the reverse is also true. If your account carries high balances or has a history of late payments, these negative factors will appear on the authorized user's credit report and may harm their credit score. This is an important consideration when choosing who to add. If your account has significant debt or payment issues, adding an authorized user could actually hurt their credit score rather than help it.

The primary cardholder's credit report and score can also be affected by adding an authorized user, though the impact is typically minimal. Adding an authorized user does not create a new account or change your credit limit, so there's usually no hard credit inquiry or negative score impact. Your existing payment history and account status remain the same.

It's worth noting that different credit scoring models treat authorized user accounts differently. Some credit scoring models (like FICO) count authorized user accounts in credit calculations, while others may weight them less heavily than accounts in the person's own name. The exact impact varies by the scoring model used by lenders.

Practical Takeaway: Before adding someone as an authorized user to improve their credit, review your own account's payment history and current balance. If your account is in good standing, adding them can help their score. If your account has problems, it may harm their credit instead.

Managing and Monitoring Authorized User Activity

Once you've added an authorized user, you maintain full control over the account and responsibility for all charges. However, it's wise to set expectations and monitor activity to ensure the card is being used as intended. Chase provides several tools to help you manage authorized user spending.

Through your Chase online account, you can view all transactions made by authorized users on the account. Your monthly statement will list charges separately, so you can see who made each purchase. This visibility allows you to spot unauthorized or unexpected charges quickly. Many cardholders set up a system where the authorized user reports their spending, and the primary cardholder reconciles it with the statement.

You can set spending limits on some Chase cards. This feature lets you cap how much an authorized user can spend per transaction or per day. Not
