Understanding Mississippi Driver's License Address Changes

An address change on your Mississippi driver's license or identification card is a record update that tells the Department of Public Safety where you currently live. When you move to a new home, your license still shows your old address until you notify the state. This mismatch between your physical location and your license address can create problems when law enforcement stops you, when you need to prove your residency, or when you apply for services that verify your address.

Mississippi law requires you to report address changes within a reasonable timeframe after moving. While the state does not impose a specific penalty for minor delays, keeping your address current is considered a legal responsibility. Many people are unaware that an outdated address on official identification can lead to complications—mail sent to your old address may not reach you, voting registration records might not match, and financial institutions may flag your account for suspicious activity if your stated address differs from your license.

The Mississippi Driver's License Testing and Issuance (DLTI) system tracks all address information in a centralized database. When you update your address, this information flows through various state agencies and can affect your voter registration, vehicle registration, and other records. Understanding how the system works helps you avoid gaps in your records and keeps your identification current with your living situation.

The address change process itself is straightforward for most people. You do not need to renew your entire license just to change an address—Mississippi offers a separate transaction type specifically for this purpose. This means you avoid the cost of a full renewal and can complete the task more quickly than applying for a brand-new license.

Practical Takeaway: Recognize that an address change is a distinct service from license renewal. Updating your address protects you from mail delivery problems and ensures your official records match your actual residence.

What Information You'll Need to Bring

Before you visit a Mississippi DMV office, gather the documents listed below. Having everything ready means your visit will take less time and you will not have to return home midway through the process. The state has specific document requirements designed to verify both your identity and your new address.

For proof of identity, you will need your current Mississippi driver's license or identification card. If you have lost your license, bring an alternative form of government-issued ID such as a passport, military ID, or Social Security card paired with a secondary document. The DMV staff will examine your ID to confirm you are who you claim to be before processing any changes to your record.

For proof of residence, Mississippi accepts several types of documents. A utility bill (electric, gas, water, or internet) is the most common proof. The bill must show your name and new address and be dated within the last 60 days. Lease agreements or mortgage documents with your name and current address also work. You may also use a bank statement, insurance policy, or government mail addressed to you at your new location. Property tax assessments and rental agreements are acceptable as well. The key requirement is that the document clearly displays your current address and ideally your name, and it should be recent—dated within two to three months of your visit.

If you do not have a utility bill or lease in your name, you can bring a notarized letter from someone who lives with you or your landlord confirming your address. This letter must state your full name, current address, and the relationship between you and the person writing the letter. A notary public can provide this service for a small fee, usually between five and fifteen dollars.

You will also need to bring your Social Security number or have it on file. If you do not know your number by heart, bring your Social Security card or a document that displays it. The DMV uses this number to verify your identity within their system.

Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of required documents before going to the DMV: current license, proof of residence document from the last 60 days, and your Social Security information. This prevents unnecessary trips and delays.

Visiting a Mississippi DMV Office in Person

Mississippi has multiple Driver's License Testing and Issuance centers located throughout the state. The main office is in Jackson, but regional locations serve residents in cities such as Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Meridian, and Tupelo. Each office operates during standard business hours, typically Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., though some locations may have slightly different schedules. A few offices close during lunch hours. It is wise to check the specific office's hours before you visit, as schedules change seasonally and occasionally for state holidays.

Walk-in customers are generally welcome at DLTI offices, but you may wait in line for 30 minutes to two hours depending on the time of day and day of the week. Mornings early in the week tend to be less busy than afternoons and Fridays. If you prefer not to wait, some locations now offer online appointment scheduling through the Mississippi DMV website. You can reserve a specific time slot up to 30 days in advance, which significantly reduces your wait time at the office.

When you arrive at the DMV office, go directly to the information window or the first available clerk. Tell the staff member you need an address change. They will provide you with a form or direct you to submit your information electronically at a kiosk if available. The form requires your current driver's license number, your new address, and confirmation of your identity. You will sign the form in the presence of DMV staff, who will then verify your documents.

The staff member will examine your proof of residence to ensure it meets requirements. They may ask you questions about your move or your new address to confirm you are not making fraudulent changes to someone else's account. After verification, you will pay the fee and receive your updated license or ID card. This card is printed on-site at many locations, so you may leave with it the same day. In some cases, the card is mailed to you within one to two weeks.

During your visit, the DMV may also offer other services such as vehicle registration renewal, license plate applications, or commercial endorsement testing. If you need any of these services, you can handle them in the same visit, making better use of your time at the office.

Practical Takeaway: Schedule an appointment online if available to reduce wait times, bring all required documents, and arrive early in the week for shorter lines. Allow 30 to 60 minutes for your visit.

Costs and Fees Associated with Address Changes

The fee for an address change on a Mississippi driver's license is significantly lower than the cost of renewing your entire license. As of current rates, an address change typically costs between five and ten dollars, depending on whether you receive your card on-site or by mail. This is substantially cheaper than a standard license renewal, which can cost thirty to fifty dollars. Since you are only updating one piece of information rather than reissuing the entire license, the state charges a minimal administrative fee.

Payment methods accepted at Mississippi DMV offices include cash, debit cards, and credit cards. Some locations may not accept personal checks. If you plan to pay by card, bring your card with you; DMV offices do not hold cards or allow payments through phone or mail for address changes. If you are unsure which payment methods a specific office accepts, call ahead before your visit.

If your license was recently renewed, you may not want to pay for a separate address change card. In that case, you could update your address in the DMV database without receiving a new card. However, this means your physical card will still show your old address, which may cause confusion with police or at establishments checking ID. It is generally recommended to obtain the updated card so that all your identification documents align with your current information.

Some DMV services may offer combined transactions. For example, if you need to renew your license and change your address at the same time, you pay one renewal fee rather than separate fees for each service. If your license is expiring within the next few months and you are moving, you might consider handling both at once to reduce total costs.

Certain circumstances may result in additional fees. If you have a commercial driver's license (CDL) and need to update your address, the fee structure may differ slightly. If you need expedited mailing or a rush card, additional charges may apply, though Mississippi does not typically offer rush services for address changes.

Practical Takeaway: Budget approximately five to ten dollars for an address change and bring a payment card or cash. Avoid unnecessary additional costs by checking whether your license renewal and address change can be handled together.
