Understanding Earwax Buildup in Hearing Aids

Earwax is a natural substance your body produces to protect and lubricate the ear canal. It typically moves out of your ear on its own, but when you wear hearing aids, the device can trap earwax and prevent it from exiting normally. This buildup happens because hearing aids sit in or near the ear canal, creating a barrier that interferes with the ear's natural cleaning process.

According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, approximately 12% of children and 26% of adults over age 69 experience problematic earwax buildup. When hearing aid wearers don't manage earwax properly, the accumulation can reduce sound quality, create feedback or whistling, and potentially damage the device itself. The problem becomes more common the longer someone wears hearing aids regularly.

Different types of hearing aids accumulate wax at different rates. Behind-the-ear (BTE) models typically experience less wax exposure than in-the-ear (ITE) or completely-in-the-canal (CIC) styles, since those sit deeper in the ear. Receiver-in-the-canal (RIC) devices fall somewhere in the middle. Understanding your specific hearing aid style helps you know where to focus your cleaning efforts.

Wax buildup doesn't happen overnight. Most people notice gradual changes first—sound becoming muffled, the device cutting in and out, or increased feedback. Some individuals produce more cerumen (the medical term for earwax) than others due to genetics, ear canal shape, and age. Older adults and those with certain skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis tend to produce drier, flakier wax that's harder to manage.

Practical Takeaway: Track how often you notice wax on your hearing aids. If buildup occurs frequently (more than every few days), you may need to clean your devices daily or discuss alternative solutions with your hearing professional, such as wax guards or different device styles.

Daily Cleaning Methods for Hearing Aids

The most effective hearing aid care routine includes daily cleaning with proper tools. Starting with a soft, dry cloth or microfiber wipe (often provided with your hearing aids) removes surface earwax and moisture. Simply turn off your hearing aids, use a gentle wiping motion on all exterior surfaces, and pay special attention to the speaker end and microphone ports where wax accumulates most.

A hearing aid brush or wax pick tool, typically included in your device's care kit, reaches into crevices a cloth cannot. These small tools have a thin pointed end and sometimes a tiny brush. Use the pointed end to gently dislodge wax from around the speaker opening or dome—the soft part that sits in your ear canal. Never force the tool or insert it where it doesn't fit naturally, as you can damage delicate components.

Wax guards are thin protective barriers that fit over the speaker opening and catch earwax before it enters the device. They come in various styles depending on your hearing aid model. Some hearing aids have removable wax guards you can swap out daily or weekly; others require professional replacement. If your device has wax guards, checking and replacing them regularly is often the single most important maintenance step you can take. Many users find that replacing wax guards every three to five days prevents serious buildup.

For ear molds (the custom-made plastic pieces that deliver sound into your ear canal), separate cleaning becomes necessary. Disconnect the ear mold from the hearing aid tubing, then wash it with warm soapy water using a soft cloth or soft toothbrush. Dry it thoroughly—moisture inside tubing can damage electronics. Never use hot water, as this can warp the mold. Allow the mold to dry completely (at least one hour) before reconnecting it to your hearing aid.

Electric cleaning devices marketed for hearing aids offer another option, though they're not necessary for most users. These small ultrasonic or vibration-based devices claim to remove wax effectively. While some users report good results, they add expense and aren't proven more effective than manual cleaning with proper brushes and picks for routine maintenance.

Practical Takeaway: Create a daily cleaning ritual—perhaps each evening before storing your hearing aids in a dry storage container. Spend just two to three minutes wiping surfaces, checking wax guards, and clearing any visible buildup. This routine prevents wax from accumulating to problematic levels.

Storage and Moisture Management

Where and how you store your hearing aids directly impacts wax buildup and device longevity. Moisture encourages wax to become sticky and accumulate faster, while proper storage keeps devices dry and clean. Every night, place your hearing aids in a dedicated storage container rather than leaving them exposed on a nightstand or bathroom counter.

Hearing aid storage boxes come in several types. Basic cases provide protection from physical damage but don't address moisture. Desiccant storage containers use silica gel or other moisture-absorbing materials to keep the interior dry. These are preferable if you live in a humid climate or tend to perspire heavily. Some advanced storage boxes include UV light or mild heat features designed to kill bacteria and further dry the device. The American Hearing Research Foundation notes that moisture exposure is one of the top causes of hearing aid malfunction, second only to physical damage.

Silica gel packets or beads inside a storage container need regular replacement. When the gel appears fully saturated (usually indicated by color change from blue or orange to pink or white), replace it with fresh packets. In very humid environments or after water exposure, you may need to replace desiccant weekly or even more frequently. Some reusable silica gel packets can be refreshed by placing them in a warm oven briefly, according to package directions.

Beyond storage, daily moisture management prevents wax from becoming problematic. After showering or being in humid conditions, wipe your hearing aids more thoroughly than usual. If moisture somehow enters your device, place it in the desiccant container for several hours or overnight before using it again. Some hearing aid wearers also use a hearing aid dehumidifier—a small electronic device that actively removes moisture. While not essential, these prove helpful for people in tropical climates or those with very active lifestyles.

Never store hearing aids in the bathroom medicine cabinet, where humidity from showers accumulates. Instead, keep them in a bedroom or living area away from heat sources. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight, as this can warp components and damage the battery. If you have multiple pairs of hearing aids or use them only part-time, the non-active pair should still be stored in a desiccant container with the batteries removed.

Practical Takeaway: Establish a consistent nightly routine: clean your hearing aids with a dry cloth, place them in a desiccant storage container, and remove the batteries to allow them to dry overnight. This simple habit significantly reduces moisture-related wax issues.

Professional Wax Removal Services

While daily home cleaning manages most wax buildup, sometimes professional intervention becomes necessary. Audiologists and hearing aid specialists have specialized tools and training to safely remove stubborn wax without damaging expensive devices. If you notice persistent wax buildup that home cleaning can't resolve, or if your hearing aid seems clogged despite regular care, scheduling a professional cleaning appointment is appropriate.

Professionals use several methods for hearing aid cleaning. Manual tools similar to those in your home kit, but with superior lighting and magnification, remove visible wax. Some hearing professionals use compressed air or gentle suction devices to clear wax from internal components. In some cases, they may recommend removing your hearing aids temporarily while they address underlying earwax issues in your ear canal itself. This might involve referral to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist or audiologist trained in cerumen removal from the ear canal.

Your hearing aid retailer or the manufacturer may offer complimentary cleaning services periodically. Many practices include a professional cleaning appointment every six months or annually as part of hearing aid care packages. Taking advantage of these services during regular follow-up appointments prevents problems from developing. If buildup becomes severe between scheduled cleanings, most providers can accommodate urgent appointments.

Earwax impaction in your ear canal (not just on the device itself) sometimes requires professional removal. An ENT doctor can safely remove impacted cerumen using specializing instruments or suction, a process called cerumen management. This differs from routine hearing aid cleaning but addresses the underlying issue when excessive earwax production contributes to device problems. Studies
