Understanding Fram Oil Filters and Their Purpose

Fram is one of the largest oil filter manufacturers in North America, producing filters for vehicles ranging from compact cars to heavy-duty trucks. An oil filter's primary job is to remove contaminants from your engine oil as it circulates through the engine. These contaminants include dirt particles, metal shavings from engine wear, and sludge that accumulates over time. Without a functioning oil filter, these particles would circulate through your engine and cause accelerated wear on critical components like pistons, bearings, and valve lifters.

Fram manufactures several filter types, each designed for different situations. The standard spin-on filter is the most common type you'll encounter. These cylindrical filters screw onto a filter housing on your engine. Fram also produces high-mileage filters designed for vehicles with over 75,000 miles, which use different media to better handle the thicker oil typically used in older engines. Additionally, Fram makes synthetic filters that use advanced materials to capture smaller particles and last longer between oil changes.

The filter element inside a Fram filter is typically made from accordion-shaped paper or synthetic material. As oil passes through this material, particles become trapped while clean oil flows through to the engine. A bypass valve inside the filter ensures that if the filter becomes too clogged, oil can still reach the engine rather than starving it of lubrication. This is a critical safety feature that prevents engine damage from lack of oil flow.

Understanding what your current filter does will help you appreciate why the installation process matters. A properly installed filter ensures a tight seal that prevents oil from leaking and unfiltered oil from bypassing the filter material. Improper installation can result in oil leaks, pressure loss, and engine damage.

Practical takeaway: Before beginning installation, identify which Fram filter type your vehicle requires. Your owner's manual or the parts department at an auto parts store can help you find the correct model number. Never assume that a filter for a similar vehicle will work for yours, as filter housings vary significantly between models.

Gathering Tools and Materials You'll Need

Successful oil filter installation requires only a few basic tools, most of which you likely already have in a typical garage or toolbox. The most essential tool is an oil filter wrench, which provides grip and leverage to remove the old filter. Fram and other manufacturers produce filter wrenches in various styles, including the traditional strap-type wrench and the socket-type wrench. The strap wrench works on most spin-on filters regardless of size, while socket-type wrenches are designed for specific filter diameters and work well if you know your filter size.

Beyond the filter wrench, you'll need a drain pan or similar container to catch old oil that may drip during filter removal. A standard 5-quart capacity pan works well for most passenger vehicles. Some people use old oil containers or baking pans as alternatives. Have rags or paper towels nearby for cleanup and to wipe spilled oil from the engine block and surrounding areas.

You may also want to gather safety equipment including work gloves and safety glasses. Work gloves protect your hands from hot oil if the engine has been running recently, and they provide better grip on the filter wrench. Safety glasses prevent oil splash from entering your eyes during removal. A flashlight or work light becomes invaluable if you're working in a garage with limited lighting, as filter housings are often positioned in tight, shadowy spaces on the engine block.

Before you begin, ensure you have the new Fram filter on hand. Inspect the box to confirm the part number matches your vehicle's requirements. Set the filter in an easily accessible location near your work area. Some people also prepare a small container of new oil to have available, as you may need to top off your oil level after the oil change is complete, though this step typically happens after the filter installation.

An optional but useful item is a filter drip tray that fits under the old filter as you unscrew it. This tray catches the initial drips of oil that escape when you first break the seal, reducing cleanup afterward. Some auto parts stores rent or give away these trays.

Practical takeaway: Collect all tools and materials before you start working. Stopping mid-procedure to hunt for a rag or wrench interrupts your workflow and increases the chance of mistakes. Laying everything out in advance also ensures you won't accidentally skip a step because you lacked a necessary item.

Step-by-Step Removal of Your Old Fram Filter

The removal process is where most installation problems originate, so take your time and follow each step carefully. First, locate the oil filter on your engine. On most vehicles, the filter is a cylindrical component roughly 4 to 5 inches tall, mounted vertically on the side of the engine block. Consult your owner's manual if you're uncertain about the location. The filter housing may be warm or hot to the touch if the engine has been running, so allow the engine to cool for 5 to 10 minutes before touching it, or wear work gloves for protection.

Position your drain pan directly under the filter before you begin loosening it. This step prevents oil from spilling onto your engine block and the floor. Some filters point downward, while others angle slightly, so adjust your pan position accordingly. It's better to position the pan too far to one side than to have oil miss it entirely.

Using your oil filter wrench, grip the filter near its base where the wrench will have the best mechanical advantage. Turn the wrench counterclockwise slowly at first. The goal is to break the seal between the filter and the housing. You may feel significant resistance because the rubber gasket on the filter has created a tight seal. Once you feel the seal break, you can often unscrew the filter by hand. As you unscrew it, angle the filter slightly to direct any remaining oil into the drain pan below.

Completely remove the old filter and place it in your drain pan, allowing it to drip for several minutes. Some filters contain quite a bit of oil, so don't rush this step. If the old filter was on tightly, small quantities of oil will continue dripping from the filter threads or the housing for a minute or two after removal.

Inspect the filter housing area where the old filter attached. You should see a rubber gasket on the old filter that's now separated from the housing. Run your finger around the housing surface where the filter was mounted. Occasionally, the rubber gasket from the old filter sticks to the housing instead of coming off with the filter. If you see a rubber ring still on the housing, carefully peel it away and discard it. This step is critical—installing a new filter over an old gasket will prevent the new filter from sealing properly and can cause oil leaks.

Practical takeaway: Take extra care during this step to ensure no old gasket material remains on the housing. This is the most common cause of oil leaks following a filter change. Wipe the mounting surface with a clean rag to ensure it's free of debris and old oil residue.

Preparing and Installing the New Fram Filter

Before installing the new filter, clean the filter mounting surface on your engine block thoroughly. Use a clean rag to wipe away all old oil, dirt, and any remaining gasket material. The mounting surface should be clean, dry, and free of debris. This creates a proper sealing surface for the new filter's rubber gasket.

Now examine your new Fram filter. You'll notice a rubber gasket (also called a seal ring) around the top of the filter where it will connect to the mounting surface. This gasket is pre-installed and requires no additional preparation. However, you should lightly coat this gasket with a thin layer of new, clean engine oil. Use your finger to apply a small amount of new oil to the gasket all the way around. This serves two purposes: it helps the gasket create a proper seal, and it makes future filter removal easier because the gasket won't dry and stick as firmly to the housing.

Hand-screw the new filter onto the mounting surface. You'll feel the rubber gasket make initial contact with the housing. Continue screwing clockwise by hand until you feel moderate resistance—typically when the gasket contacts the housing surface firmly. Once you reach this point, you need to turn the filter an additional three-quarters to one full turn using your filter wrench or by hand if you're strong enough.

This additional turning distance is important. Fram and virtually all filter manufacturers specify this in their installation instructions because
