Free Guide to Creating Wikipedia Pages

Understanding Wikipedia's Purpose and Structure

Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia written and edited by volunteers from around the world. Founded in 2001, it has grown to contain over 6.7 million articles across numerous languages. Unlike traditional encyclopedias, Wikipedia operates on the principle that anyone can contribute, though strict rules govern what information appears on the site.

The platform operates under the Wikimedia Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to free knowledge. Every article on Wikipedia follows a consistent format and must meet specific quality standards. The site uses a system where experienced editors review new contributions and can reject or modify content that doesn't meet guidelines.

Wikipedia's structure includes several key components. The main article text presents information organized into sections. The "talk" page (discussion page) shows conversations between editors about the article's content and direction. The "history" tab displays every edit ever made to the page, allowing anyone to see how the article evolved. Edit summaries provide brief explanations of why changes were made.

The site operates under five main pillars: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, it promotes a neutral point of view, it contains free content, editors should treat each other with respect, and there are no firm rules—only principles. This last point surprises many people. While rules exist, Wikipedia values common sense and community judgment over rigid enforcement.

Understanding this structure matters because it shapes how pages get created and maintained. New articles must fit within Wikipedia's mission of providing neutral, factual information. Content created purely for promotion or marketing typically gets rejected. Articles about living people face particularly strict scrutiny to prevent spreading inaccurate information.

Practical takeaway: Before creating a Wikipedia page, spend time reading several existing articles in your topic area. Notice their structure, how they cite sources, and what information they include. This observation teaches you more about Wikipedia's standards than any guide alone.

Determining Whether Your Topic Merits a Wikipedia Page

Not every person, organization, or product deserves its own Wikipedia page. The site uses "notability" as the primary standard for deciding what topics warrant inclusion. Notability means the topic has received significant coverage in reliable sources outside of Wikipedia itself. This prevents the site from becoming filled with promotional pages or obscure topics lacking real-world significance.

For people, Wikipedia considers whether they have received substantial coverage in major newspapers, magazines, academic journals, or other respected publications. Local news stories about a small business owner typically don't meet this threshold. However, coverage in national publications or specialized industry publications that focus on their work does count. A person must have received attention beyond their own self-promotion.

For organizations and businesses, notability requires evidence that the organization has made a significant impact in its field. A small local business usually won't meet this standard. However, organizations that have received media attention, won major awards, or influenced their industry may qualify. The key question is whether third-party sources—not controlled by the organization—have written about its importance and activities.

Geographic locations like towns, neighborhoods, and landmarks have different notability standards. Most towns with their own government merit Wikipedia pages. However, subdivisions or shopping centers within larger cities typically don't. Mountains, parks, and other natural features often qualify based on their geographic significance.

Events can be notable if they had significant cultural, historical, or social impact. Annual recurring events like major conferences or festivals may qualify. Single events like concerts or local fundraisers typically don't unless they had unusual historical significance.

Wikipedia maintains a detailed set of notability guidelines covering different categories. These guidelines are not absolute rules but rather explanations of what Wikipedia's community has decided deserves coverage. The guidelines for people (known as GNG—General Notability Guideline) state that a person should have received significant coverage in multiple reliable sources that are independent of the person.

Practical takeaway: Search Wikipedia thoroughly before deciding whether your topic qualifies. If similar topics exist and yours is less prominent, it may not meet notability standards. If you cannot point to at least three substantial articles in major publications about your topic (written by journalists, not by you), the topic likely lacks sufficient notability.

Researching and Gathering Reliable Sources

Every claim in a Wikipedia article must be supported by citations to reliable sources. This requirement exists to prevent misinformation and ensure that Wikipedia reflects what has actually been published and verified. The citation requirement is one of Wikipedia's most important rules and one that separates it from less reliable websites.

Reliable sources include academic journals, books published by established publishers, major newspapers and magazines, and other professional publications. These sources typically employ editors and fact-checkers who verify information before publication. Personal blogs, social media posts, press releases, and self-published materials are not considered reliable sources for Wikipedia purposes.

For business or organizational topics, annual reports and official documents from the organization can support factual claims about the organization itself (like founding date or headquarters location) but cannot serve as the primary source for claims about the organization's importance or impact. You need third-party coverage for those claims.

Academic sources carry particular weight on Wikipedia. Peer-reviewed journal articles and university press books demonstrate that experts in a field have examined and verified the information. Books published by recognized academic publishers are considered especially reliable.

When researching your topic, aim to find at least five to ten substantial sources discussing it. For a person, these should be detailed articles in publications with editorial standards, not brief mentions. For organizations, look for articles discussing the organization's activities, impact, and significance. News articles, feature stories, and industry publications all count.

Keep detailed notes about each source: the publication name, author, date, and the specific claims it supports. Wikipedia requires a specific citation format, and having organized notes prevents errors when you add citations to your article.

Be honest about your sources' quality. If you're writing about a scientific topic and your main sources are blog posts rather than peer-reviewed journals, Wikipedia editors will likely reject or significantly modify your article. Sources should match the topic's importance and the types of claims being made.

Practical takeaway: Before writing, create a simple spreadsheet listing your sources. Include the publication name, date, author, and a brief note about what claim each source supports. This organization makes the citation process much faster and helps you spot if you're relying too heavily on weak sources.

Learning Wikipedia's Editing Guidelines and Content Policies

Wikipedia operates according to multiple overlapping policies and guidelines that govern article content. The most important is the Neutral Point of View (NPOV) policy. This policy requires that articles present information from all significant perspectives without favoring one viewpoint over others. For controversial topics, this means presenting what different groups believe along with the evidence for and against those beliefs.

The "No Original Research" (NOR) policy prevents Wikipedia articles from containing new information, ideas, or conclusions that haven't appeared in published sources. Wikipedia functions as a tertiary source—it synthesizes information from secondary sources but doesn't conduct original investigations or analysis. This means you cannot include your own research findings, interpretations, or conclusions.

The "Verifiability" policy requires that any information in an article can be verified by checking the sources cited. This doesn't mean the information must be true in an absolute sense, only that it appears in published sources. A false statement published in a reputable newspaper is verifiable and may be included if the article notes that this is what the source claimed.

Articles about living people face particularly strict rules under the "Biographies of Living People" (BLP) policy. Potentially damaging or negative claims about living people require especially reliable sources. Wikipedia errs on the side of caution to avoid spreading false information that could harm someone's reputation. Claims about living people's personal lives, criminal history, or controversial actions need strong sourcing.

The "Notability" guideline, discussed in the previous section, applies across all topic categories. Articles must demonstrate that their subjects have received significant coverage in reliable, independent sources. Promotional content—articles that read like advertisements or marketing materials—violates multiple policies and will be rejected.

Wikipedia distinguishes between what can be included and what constitutes unacceptable bias. You can write that a political figure is controversial, but only if multiple reliable sources describe them that way. You cannot use adjectives like "brilliant," "incompetent," or "radical" in neutral point of view articles unless these terms appear in your sources and you attribute them appropriately.
