Find and Cancel Your Amazon Subscriptions Guide

Why People Lose Track of Amazon Subscriptions

Amazon subscriptions are designed to be convenient—you set them up once, and they renew automatically. But that convenience comes with a hidden cost: many people forget what they're actually paying for each month. Research from financial tracking apps shows that the average American has between three and four forgotten subscriptions across various services, with Amazon Prime and Subscribe & Save items being among the most commonly overlooked.

The problem isn't that Amazon makes cancellation difficult—it's that subscriptions fade into the background. You sign up for a Subscribe & Save discount on laundry detergent, get busy with life, and suddenly three years have passed. Maybe you started an Amazon Prime membership for a specific reason (free two-day shipping during a move, or to watch a particular show) and forgot to reconsider whether you still need it. Prime Video add-ons are especially easy to forget about since they're buried in your account settings, separate from your main subscription.

Amazon reports that millions of Prime members remain active subscribers, but industry surveys suggest that a meaningful portion of these members don't actively use their subscriptions or would prefer to pause them temporarily. The Subscribe & Save program, which offers 5-20% discounts on recurring orders, can also become problematic when your needs change. You might have set up automatic coffee deliveries that now pile up in your garage.

Understanding where your subscriptions hide within Amazon's ecosystem is the first step. This guide walks through the specific locations where Amazon stores subscription information, how to spot charges you might have forgotten about, and the straightforward process for canceling anything you no longer want.

Practical takeaway: Before you do anything else, pull up your Amazon account and look at your last month of charges. You might be surprised what you find—and that awareness is what this guide builds on.

Locating Your Amazon Subscriptions and Memberships

Amazon stores subscription information in several different places within your account, which is why people often miss them. Unlike a single "subscriptions" dashboard that shows everything in one spot, Amazon spreads this information across different sections depending on the type of subscription.

To find your Prime membership, log into your Amazon account and navigate to "Your Account," then look for "Memberships & Subscriptions." This section displays your current Prime status, renewal date, and any Prime Video add-ons you've purchased (like HBO Max, Paramount+, or Starz through Amazon). You'll see the exact date your next billing cycle starts and the amount you're charged.

Subscribe & Save items are found by going to "Returns, Orders & Accounts" and selecting "Manage Your Subscribe & Save Items" or "Subscriptions." This page lists every product you've set to automatically reorder—the item name, how often it renews (weekly, monthly, every three months, etc.), the next delivery date, and your discount percentage. Some items might be scheduled for delivery two months from now and completely escaped your memory.

For Amazon Music, Kindle Unlimited, Amazon Fresh, and other individual subscriptions, they typically appear in the Memberships & Subscriptions section alongside Prime, but it's worth checking multiple areas since Amazon occasionally reorganizes its interface. Look for anything labeled as a "subscription" or "membership" with a recurring charge.

If you have a business account separate from your personal account, subscriptions there won't show up in your personal account dashboard. Business Prime members need to look in their business account settings separately.

One helpful technique: open your credit card or bank statement and look for recurring charges labeled "AMAZON.COM" or "AMZN." Then search your subscription pages for anything matching those charge amounts and dates. This reverse method often catches subscriptions that aren't immediately visible in the membership section.

Practical takeaway: Open your Amazon account right now and navigate to "Memberships & Subscriptions." Spend five minutes looking at what's listed there. Write down anything you don't actively use or need. You're building an inventory before taking action.

Understanding Different Subscription Types and Their Refund Policies

Amazon offers several different subscription categories, and each one behaves differently when you cancel. Knowing the distinction matters because it affects whether you'll receive a refund and what happens to any remaining benefits.

Amazon Prime: This is a membership subscription with an annual or monthly option. As of 2024, Prime costs either $14.99 per month or $139 annually (with a student rate of $69 annually). If you cancel mid-cycle, Amazon's refund policy states you may receive a refund for the unused portion—but only if you cancel shortly after being billed. If you've been a member for a while and decide to cancel, you've entered the use period and typically won't receive money back. However, you'll maintain access to Prime benefits through your current billing period. The exact refund timeline varies, so Amazon's policy page should be your reference point.

Prime Video Add-ons: Services like HBO Max, Paramount+, or Starz purchased through Amazon Prime Video operate on their own billing cycles. When you cancel a Prime Video add-on, it typically stops at your next renewal date, and you don't receive a refund for the current month. However, you maintain access through the end of your paid period. Some add-ons may have different terms, so check the specific service's policy.

Subscribe & Save: These are individual product orders set to repeat at intervals you choose. There's no membership fee for Subscribe & Save itself—you're just ordering products on a recurring schedule. You can cancel individual items anytime, and there's usually no financial penalty. If you've already been charged for an upcoming delivery and then cancel, you can often contact Amazon to request a refund for that specific order if it hasn't shipped yet.

Amazon Music Unlimited: This music streaming service costs $11.98 per month for regular users or $119 annually. Student pricing is available. Like Prime, you can cancel anytime, but refunds for the current month are rare unless you cancel immediately after being charged.

Kindle Unlimited: This e-book subscription costs $11.99 monthly. If you cancel, you lose access to borrowed books immediately, though any books you've downloaded remain on your Kindle device even after cancellation (you just can't borrow new ones).

Amazon Fresh and Prime Now: These grocery delivery services are often included with Prime but may have separate subscription components in certain regions. Check your Memberships & Subscriptions page to see if you're paying an additional fee beyond your Prime membership.

Practical takeaway: Look at the subscriptions you found in the previous section and identify which type each one is. Write down which ones have refund potential based on how recently you were charged, versus which ones you'll simply lose access to upon cancellation.

Step-by-Step Cancellation Process for Each Subscription Type

Canceling Amazon Prime: Go to "Your Account" > "Memberships & Subscriptions," find "Amazon Prime Membership," and click "Edit Membership." You'll see your current plan and the option to "Cancel Membership" or "End Membership." Click that button. Amazon will show you the benefits you'll lose and confirm your current billing cycle end date. Follow the prompts to confirm the cancellation. You'll receive a confirmation email, and your Prime benefits will continue until the last day of your current billing period. On that date, your card will stop being charged.

Canceling Prime Video Add-ons: From "Your Account" > "Memberships & Subscriptions," find the specific add-on (like HBO Max) and click "Cancel Channel" or "Manage." You'll see the option to cancel immediately or at the end of your current billing period. Choose your preference and confirm. Some add-ons allow you to cancel through the service itself (logging into HBO Max and canceling there) rather than through Amazon, but canceling through Amazon's interface is the most straightforward method.

Canceling Subscribe & Save Items: Go to "Returns, Orders & Accounts" > "Your Subscriptions" (or "Manage Your Subscribe & Save Items"). You'll see a list of all recurring orders. Find the item
