Delete Multiple iPhone Photos in Bulk

Understanding Your iPhone Photo Storage

iPhones store thousands of photos over time, and managing them becomes increasingly important as storage fills up. When your device shows storage warnings or operates slowly, one of the first places to look is your Photos app. Understanding how photos are stored on your iPhone helps you make informed decisions about which images to keep and which to remove.

Your iPhone stores photos in several locations. The main Photos library contains all images you've taken with your camera, screenshots, and photos you've received through messages or email. Additionally, iCloud Photos can sync your library across devices if you've enabled this feature. The Recently Deleted album holds photos you've removed for up to 30 days before permanent deletion occurs. Some apps like Messenger, WhatsApp, or social media platforms also store photos separately in their own folders.

Photo file sizes vary significantly depending on several factors. A standard photo taken with your iPhone camera typically ranges from 3 to 5 megabytes. Live photos, which capture movement and sound, can be twice as large. Screenshots and screen recordings take up minimal space, usually under 1 megabyte. Video recordings consume substantially more storage—one minute of 4K video at 60 frames per second can use up to 400 megabytes.

When you delete photos from your iPhone, the process works in stages. First, photos move to the Recently Deleted folder. During this 30-day period, you can recover them if you change your mind. After 30 days, iOS permanently removes the photos from your device. If you use iCloud Photos, deletions sync across all your connected devices unless you've specifically managed which devices have access.

Practical takeaway: Before deleting photos in bulk, determine how much storage you're using. Open Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage to see your current usage. Understanding your storage situation helps you decide which deletion method works best for your needs.

Using the Photos App to Select and Delete Multiple Images

The Photos app provides the most straightforward method for deleting multiple photos at once. This built-in tool requires no additional apps or complex steps. Start by opening the Photos app and navigating to the moment, collection, or year view depending on your organizational preference. The "Moments" view groups photos by date and location, while the "Years" view shows your entire photo library organized by year.

To delete multiple photos using the standard Photos app method, locate the "Select" button typically found in the upper right corner of your screen. Tap this button to enter selection mode. Once active, your interface changes to show checkboxes next to each photo. Tap the checkbox on the first photo you want to delete. Continue tapping additional photos to add them to your selection. The number of selected photos appears at the bottom of your screen.

You can also use shortcuts to select photos more efficiently. Tap the first photo you want to select, then hold down Shift and tap the last photo in a range to select everything between those two images. This method works particularly well when deleting photos from a specific date or event. For selecting every photo in a moment or collection, look for the "Select All" option that may appear when you've entered selection mode.

After selecting the photos you want to remove, locate the trash or delete icon—typically a trash can symbol appearing at the bottom right of your screen. Tap this icon to move your selected photos to the Recently Deleted folder. iOS will ask you to confirm your action. Confirm deletion by tapping "Delete [number] Photos." At this stage, photos remain in Recently Deleted for 30 days, giving you a recovery window if needed.

A useful approach for bulk deletion involves working through specific albums or collections. Navigate to your Camera Roll, Screenshots folder, or any custom album you've created. These focused views make it easier to identify which photos to remove without accidentally deleting images you want to keep. Many users find it helpful to delete screenshots and duplicate photos first, as these rarely need permanent storage.

Practical takeaway: Practice the selection process with just a few photos first. This helps you become comfortable with the process before attempting to delete hundreds of images at once. Start by clearing out obvious candidates like blurry photos, duplicates, and screenshots before tackling larger groups.

Efficiently Deleting Photos by Date, Album, or Category

Organizing your deletion strategy by date, album, or category makes the process less overwhelming and more systematic. Rather than attempting to review and delete every photo in your library, focusing on specific groups helps you work methodically through your collection. This approach also reduces the risk of accidentally deleting photos you want to preserve.

Date-based deletion works well for users who want to remove older photos. Navigate to the "Years" view in your Photos app to see your entire collection organized chronologically. Tap a year you want to review, then move to the "Months" view to see specific time periods. The "Days" view breaks this down further, showing exactly which photos were taken on particular dates. From any of these views, enter selection mode and choose photos from specific dates to delete. This method is particularly useful for removing vacation photos from several years ago or photos from events you no longer wish to keep.

Album-based deletion targets specific collections you've organized or that iOS created automatically. Your Photos app contains several default albums including Recently Added, Favorites, and Hidden. Screenshots typically have their own dedicated folder. Burst photos—multiple images taken in rapid succession—appear in the Bursts album. By working through these albums individually, you can delete categories of photos without affecting your main library. Many users find success by clearing out their Screenshots and Bursts albums first, as these tend to accumulate quickly.

Location-based organization helps you target photos by where they were taken. If your iPhone has location services enabled, photos are tagged with location data. Some third-party photo organization apps display photos on a map or organize them by location. Within the standard Photos app, you can view photos by the "Places" category if you have this feature enabled. This helps you find and delete all photos from a specific trip or location at once.

You might also organize deletion by photo type. Create a mental or written list of categories: photos that are blurry, duplicate photos, unwanted selfies, photos with closed eyes, and similar images. Work through your library category by category, which feels more manageable than trying to evaluate every single photo. This categorical approach also helps you establish clearer criteria for what deserves space on your device.

Practical takeaway: Choose one specific date range, album, or category and delete those photos completely before moving to another group. This segment-by-segment approach prevents decision fatigue and makes the task feel less daunting than deleting thousands of photos all at once.

Permanently Removing Photos from Recently Deleted

When you delete photos through the standard method, they don't disappear immediately. Instead, they move to the Recently Deleted folder, which acts as a safety net for 30 days. Understanding how to manage this folder is important if you want to free up storage space or permanently remove photos you've deleted. The Recently Deleted folder retains deleted photos for exactly 30 days, after which iOS automatically and permanently removes them.

To access your Recently Deleted folder, open the Photos app and look for the "Albums" tab at the bottom of your screen. Scroll down until you see "Recently Deleted" listed among your albums. Tap this album to view all photos and videos you've removed during the past 30 days. This folder displays the number of days remaining before each photo is permanently deleted. Photos deleted more recently show higher numbers of remaining days.

To permanently delete photos before the 30-day period expires, enter selection mode in the Recently Deleted album just as you would in your main photo library. Tap the checkbox next to each photo you want to remove permanently. After selecting your photos, look for the "Delete" or trash icon at the bottom of your screen. Tap this icon and confirm that you want to permanently delete the selected photos. This action removes them from your iPhone entirely—they cannot be recovered after this point.

If you want to permanently delete all photos in the Recently Deleted folder at once, look for a "Select All" option or button that may appear in the upper corner. This allows you to select every photo in the Recently Deleted album without tapping each one individually. After selecting all photos, tap the delete icon and confirm permanent deletion. This approach works well when you've decided you no longer need any of the photos you've previously deleted.

Be aware that permanent deletion from Recently Deleted is irreversible. Unlike selecting and deleting photos from your main library—which moves them to Recently
